David Bentley set for Newcastle move?
Both the Daily Mail and The Mirror are reporting that Newcastle are lining up a move for Tottenham's David Bently this transfer window.
Now I understand that they aren't the most respectable of sources, but it's a bit more speculation, and secretly, deep down, if you look inside your heart, we all really like a bit of speculation.
Anyway, it is believed that Bentley could be shown the door at Tottenhem to make way for David Beckham. In fact it is actually believed that Bentley could be shown the door anyway, regardless of the Beckham factor, as he was left out of the matchday squad at White Hart Lane for yesterday's visit of Fulham. Alan Pardew is said to be a keen admirer of the former Blackburn and Arsenal player's talent, and if he can nurture the kind of performances out of him that Mark Hughes managed whilst he was at Blackburn then it could be a good move for the lad, and for us. Having a winger that can cross the ball would be a good move, and one that Andy Carroll would welcome, that is for sure.
Of course, there are concerns over the application of the player. Known as a bit of a 'Jack the lad', Bentley seems to enjoy the finer things in life, but that can come across the wrong way sometimes. My only issue is how his sometimes supposed selfish attitude would work in a squad that is as tight as the one Newcastle United have currently.
Still, there comes a point where you have to take a risk in the transfer market, and with Tottenham ready to make a "susbstantial loss" on the 26-year-old, perhaps the risk could be worthwhile? If you want to improve then you need to spend money, and get some players who can do that something different.
I'm not advocating going on a massive spending spree as that quite simply isn't going to happen, but buying players who cost £1 million here and £1.5 million there will only get you so far. It's all about value, and if Bentley can rekindle the kind of performances he is capable of, and is available at the right price, then he could provide an awful lot of value at St James' Park.
Still, it's another name that we have been linked with, and he is also an attacking player, which is something that Alan Pardew hinted that we would be focussing on in this transfer window. It doesn't mean there is any truth in this, but it is nice to dream about new signings.
What do you think? Would Bentley be a good addition?
