The match – Newcastle v West Ham United

Shola Ameobi.
No-Sho for Ameobi.
West Ham are the visitors to St James’ Park this evening as both sides aim to put some more distance between themselves and the bottom three.

Both teams won their last fixture, both against teams who are near the bottom of the table, and there is a sense that a win for either side in this game could be the springboard needed to push on and secure Premier League survival.

The big team news for the home side is regarding our attack as Shola Ameobi misses out through injury to be replaced by Leon Best who makes his first Premier League start in the black and white stripes.

There is no live UK coverage of this game, although if you happen to stumble upon any links where a fellow Toon fan can watch the match online then please feel free to share it with us and leave a link to it in the comments section below.

If you would like to read a more detailed background of the fixture including injury news, form guides and a bit of a ‘stat-attack’ for both sides, then please feel free to read my match report.

Also, I’d like to apologise for the relative shoddyness of this article, and the relative lateness of it. As you all know, this place has not long opened up so it is resembling a bit of a mess at the moment, kind of like when you move into a new house. It will get there in the end though.

Team news is as follows…..

Newcastle: Steve Harper, Danny Simpson, Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Joey Barton, Cheik Tiote, Kevin Nolan, Jonas Gutierrez, Peter Lovenkrands, Leon Best.

Subs: Tim Krul, Shane Ferguson, James Perch, Mike Williamson, Danny Guthrie, Wayne Routledge, Nile Ranger.

West Ham: Rob Green, James Tomkins, Matthew Upson, Tal Ben-Haim, Danny Gabbidon, Freddy Sears, Scott Parker, Mark Noble, Radoslav Kovac, Frederic Piquionne, Carlton Cole.

Subs: Ruud Boffin, Winston Reid, Valon Behrami, Jonathon Spector, Zavon Hines, Pablo Barrera, Victor Obinna.

Howay the lads!

  1. Just got back. Wasn’t the greatest game of football in the world but i’l settle for 5-0 like. 🙂

Best hat-trick and got to be MON. I don’t beleeeeve it!

Seriously though he started scoring in preseason before he got injured and if you look at his record there’s no way he was bad as that spell of games under St Hughton.

He should be literally miles up the pecking order from Ranger aswell. The kid just looked out his depth. Needs to go out on loan IMO to work his way up a bit. He missed one that was harder to miss tonight.

    HWTL!!!

  2. I was at the game, just got back, what a cracker!!

Must have missed it, whats al this talk about Tiote going off? Didn’t see him leave the field, I must have been away with it after watching such a good game

  3. I don’t mean im not pleased. But Wet Spam were absolute pony mate. We shouldn’t get too carried away. But im happy, especially after the stick Best and Pardew get off some. He got his substitutions and tactics spot on tonight I thought.

  4. Great result and a corner turned. Everything was in place for us to blow it today, but we took our opportunity and put West Ham to the sword.

  5. I know West Ham were rubbish, but it was nice to see us using that and playing well against them and not getting too cocky. Barton tore a strip of Nolan at one point and got stuck into another couple when it looked like they were backing off. In the past against the teams not doing so well, we havent stuck to it and not played as well as we can

  6. Good result to, glad to see best score he deserves a chance in the team. Atmosphere not great today, it was very quite before the first goal went in. Not many west ham fan either. Again Bartons passing and crossing was brilliant today. Spiderman had a bad game though he’s not get much luck off the full backs in the premiership.

  7. Just watched highlights on football first. West ham were ****. But you can only play what is put in front of you. Barton should be mom but hard not to give it to best.

  8. Great result, not. Great performance to be honest but does it matter?

I still think we need a couple of players in as we have a few hard games coming up.

  9. Bloody hell, thought we were going to be last on MOTD for a minute there! lets hope we get a decent bout of highlights.

  10. Dear me, Wor Nile’s effort is a stinker. All he has to do is compose himself and he’s scored. You think he does that when he takes his touch but he somehow manages to put it miles wide!
I think he’ll be like other lads we’ve had in the past though, he’ll only need to get one and he’ll be off..but he’s certainly making finding that elusive first goal difficult!

  11. The strangest thing is how wide he puts it. It’s almost as if he’s off balance (somehow) when he takes his first touch and thinks he can only hit it with his right foot, so leaning back he swipes at it and drags it well, well wide. To be fair he immediatly apologised to Loven who was right behind him, dunno if he maybe ignored a call to leave it when desperate to get in on the action. Not if he’s going to finish like that though! He’ll get his goal but he’s making it canny hard for himself like.

  12. Well what a result eh? Shame I had to leave the house just after the first goal to go to work. Perhaps I should do that more often 😉

I’ll take the credit for this result as I didn’t predict a result 😉

I hope Tiote rests up this weekend as we need him against Sunderland. Shame twatermole won’t be playing.

I’ll get match report up tomorrow morning and hubt for highlights when I get up. I’m at hospital in the afternoon so if there is no new article for a bit that’s why

  13. He was ok. Got a couple of good crosses in and had some good movement. Made one or two mistakes like you’d expect but not many. Looked like he was injured maybe towards the end coz he was holding his leg. He got bullied of Ben Haim who is about twice his size and Ben Haim eventually got a yellow card after a nasty challenge. But Fergie did ok, he’s an intelligent player but very small and still a bit young to be starting or anything.

  14. Yeah. He still looks like a kid, premier league is a physical challenge he will have to deal with. I have not seen much of him but being from NI I have heard about him and hear he has the potential make it at this level. Couple of seasons should show if the potential will be fulfilled… Got to say it was good too see Pardew giving these lads a run out in the last half hour.

  15. Three players stood out by a mile, Best, Barton and Colloccini.

Tiote obviously was very good but thats a given.

The big problem now is we suddenly have a lot of injuries. It will be interesting to see who gets a game at Stevenage, maybe some real rookies I would think. It sounds crazy but if Best has a sore heel, might be best (haha) to keep him for the mackems and hope Shola the mackem killer will be back by then aswell.

For me Lovenkrands should definately start and possible Ranger to atone for tonight. Lovenkrands should have enough to get us through but goal aside he looks a bit toothless in the prem.

  16. He set up two for Best as well as his goal, DJG. But I know what you mean, he ain’t impressed me this season until tonights game.

Is Barton the captain now? Might help lower his card count as refs seem to take it easy on captains.

  17. I doubt we will go into the scum game with the squad we have now. I expect any business to be done quite sharpish. If we are infor Gradel and Bentley I think we can get them in sharpish. I think Best may have saved Cashley some money as I dont think a striker will be top of Pard’s list, whether it should be or not is another thing. I think Xisco is definately a gonner now and if we can do a swap with Leeds for Gradel with Smudger I suspect that could happen too. I am not bothered bout Stevenage, we should play the kids, Ferguson, Ranger, Vuckic (if fit), Kadar, Krul and then Xisco, Perch and Smith to get them in the window. We arent going to win the thing so lets rest the players who are key to trying to beat the scum in their back yard. That will be a very tough game and I would take a draw right now.
