Breaking news: Newcastle given permission to start talks with Seb Larsson.

Seb Larsson.
Larsson on his way to Newcastle.
The breaking news according to Sky Sports News is that Birmingham City have given Newcastle permission to speak to Seb Larsson over a potential move to St James’ Park.

A deal had been rumoured last week, although nothing concrete developed at that time. But given the fact that David Bentley, another rumoured Newcastle target, is currently having a medical at Birmingham ahead of a proposed loan move from Tottenham, I can only assume that this has opened the door for Newcastle to try and tempt Larsson.

Larsson is 25-years-old and arrived at Birmingham from Arsenal after a successful loan spell back in 2006. The Swedish international has made 169 appearances for Birmingham aswell as featuring 27 times for his national team.

Predominantly a right-sided midfielder, Larsson is perhaps known best for his set-piece taking abilities. That will hopefully increase the supply to Andy Carroll and allow Joey Barton to tuck back into the middle of the park to play in his favoured position.

Larrson runs out of contract at the end of this season and has been reluctant to sign another deal at St Andrews, which has led to rumours of a fee that will cost Newcastle around £1.5 million.

Nothing is finalised at the moment, and nothing may come of it, but it certainly looks like Newcastle are in the market for him. Bentley and his imminent arrival seem to have paved the way for Larsson to exit The Blues.

What do you think?

  1. Good move in my opinion. Better than Routledge, and will sell on for more if he doesn’t work out. No-brainer for me.

  2. Nice one, but also means other teams are able to talk to him if they meet their valuation, so as toonsy said, nothing’s done yet.

However, he is a decent player, whether he is being signed for a first team position I don’t know, but still, he would improve the quality of the squad.

As we’ve seen recently, when we get a few injuries and/or suspensions, our squad is nowhere near big enough to cope, so would be a shrewd signing in my opinion.

  3. I would defo put him as a starter. I think we would see a better Barton if he was in the middle, but that leaves the right wing with only Routledge. Is Larsson better than Routledge? Yep.

On that basis it is a good move and is an improvement.

  4. Struggling with the mobile site at the moment toonsy, and I had to re-register with
Wordpress also. Any one else having snags?

  5. How do you mean? On a desktop but it’s giving you mobile site?

As for re-reg. Pass. I’ll have a look.

  6. Nice addition with the emoticons, Toons. You seem to be taking to this Blog stuff like a duck to water. Keep the additions coming, mate.

Larsson will be a good addition. Especially if we can tie him up by the weekend. The Tiote appeal will fail, but Barton can return to the middle and Larsson on the right. Good stuff if it materialises.

  7. Mate the re-Reg is no problem cause it’s done now, bit when I try and leave a comment using the mobile site on my phone it comes up with the admin box and how I have no admin rights. I’m not trying to do any administrative work on the site mate but after I press the comment box that’s what I get! 😯

  8. Hmmm.

Comment worked, but it asked me to log in afterwards rather than returning me to the comments?

I’ll take a look into it.

  9. Cheers mate. Still a way to go, and there is stuff that needs sorting that I can’t do, but it get done in the end 🙂

  10. If Larsson starts – assuming he signs – it will be interesting how Pardew will accommodate Barton.

  11. I think a LB more than a LM. Arfa, Jonas, and Fergie can handle LM. We lose Jose, we’re in trouble- haven’t beeen impressed with Perch at Lb to put it mildly. Where’s Kadar?

  12. I would assume

    Ben Arfa Tiote Barton Larsson

And then of course Jonas, Smith, Nolan, Routledge

And Guthrie, Gosling, Vukic waiting in the wings, pretty well stocked.

We can see we need another style of attack also, just hope we get one.

  13. Agreed it will be interesting. In the short term, I’d play him in Tiote’s role. When tiote returns you could pair him with Barton with Nolan off the striker or play Brton on the right and use Larsson as a sub. Padew might have shown us his thoughtswith his quotes about players coming in having to fight for a spot.

  15. has anyone else heard tht we are supposed to be in talks with Adel Taarabt? £4.2million supposed to have been accepted over the weekend..

have had nee trouble with virus that i know of ive got a protecter on like

  17. Good move I reckon, means we can get shot of routledge hopefully in this window. Still, to accomodate him into our midfield as a starter then aren’t we going to have to start playing 4-5-1? Who do we drop? Nolan still needs to be in the squad for his goals and Tiote is obviously a no go.although if we can get Larsson done and dusted today then at least he can play in our next three games whilst we miss tiote.

  18. hmm well al give me laptop a full scan av got anti-virus anall its just these last couple times av logged in a get a pop up sayin av got trojon virus’s but a quickly restore me computer so it goes lol

btw didnt realise weve only lost twice away to sunderland since 1967/1968 season

  19. pardew is supposed to have told ben arfa that he’l be playin in the centre so am guessin its going to be 4-5-1 but ben arfa basically as a 2nd striker
    Tiote
    Larsson-Barton-Nolan-Jonas
    Ben Arfa
    Carroll

      (Quote)

  20. ayee toonsy its a pop up thing comes on me screen sayin scanning you have infected files and to buy this click here..and it just uploads into me laptop but a quickly restore it to a few days ago b4 it gets that far

      (Quote)

  21. Hmm is that the preffered formation you’d see us in though Toonsy? I suppose all other strikers have failed to propperly stand up to the mark which means 4-5-1 is the way forward. We can still score plenty of goals in that position anyway like 😀 But Nolan isn’t the best at pressing the defence which are other strikers are…ah well I guess it depends on who we play anyway, thats probably the best shout for the scum match. Still, if Jonas and Jose are out then we’re well and truly f*cked 😕

  22. I don’t know much about Larsson but he’s surely more effective than Raylor or Routledge, so I suppose this has to be a good thing. Can free up Barton to play in the middle if needed too.
What about the left side though? I’m not Guti’s biggest fan but he’s sorely missed when he’s not available. It was a joke playing Barton there on Sunday.

Still think that a striker needs to be our main priority. Best is average and needs to progress a lot more, Ranger is too inexperienced and immature and should be loaned out and Lovo is finished as far as I’m concerned, so that’s leaves us desperately short.

If/when we get enough points on the board we should be looking to play Vuckic, Gosling, Ferguson and a few of the other young lads a fair bit. I think Guthrie should go on loan or be sold this month because he doesn’t look like making the grade.

      (Quote)

  23. Hope not. He is important to us, and until we can get someone better we have to stick with him. He has been pinging some decent crosses in and getting dehind defences just recently.

      (Quote)

  24. I think HBA is going to be shunted around a fair bit positionwise, just to see where he’s most effective but also-hopefully-to show Jonas that we do actually have someone at left mid and if he doesn’t put in a shift he won’t be getting a game. For whatever reason the lad needs a good kick up the **** every now and then and generally comes back on fire. We might have to play arfa on the left every couple of matches and drop Jonas to keep up his performances. Still, Arfa behind Carroll would make for a brilliant partnership I reckon, can’t wait till the lads back and we can see him on the ball again, heres ohping he hasn’t lost too much magic 😉

  28. Yeah it works now, weird stuff

A couple of mins ago I swear the latest comments was from an hour ago, but when I posted my comment up, suddenly all the comments from the past hour came out altogether

Weird stuff, hope you get what i mean

Anyway, really do hope we can get hold of Larsson
    Sick of Routledge already 😕

  29. That will be because the pages are cached until you log in. You probably caught it at the end of the cycle, which is why you got the older comments 🙂

  31. Hopefully he’ll have a better time than some of the recent scandinavians we’ve had like Jon Dahl, Andreasson etc

  32. Whats happening Toonsy lad ❓ I see you have put the xmas decorations up early 😆
So it looks like me might be getting Larsson then and its not just paper talk 🙂

      (Quote)

  33. Done 🙂

I might be chaging the layout yet anyway. We’ll see though. I don’t think I have enough space for tinsel and stuff 😉

      (Quote)

  34. Thing is, could he be worse than Routledge? He has pace to burn, but doesn’t know how to use it in the PL which renders him useless. At least Larsson has had a sustained PL career barring one season.

      (Quote)

  35. Don’t get me wrong I think he’s a great signing for the price,I just don’t want people to expect a speedster

  36. anyone else heard wer supposed to be after Youseff Al Arabi who weve been linked with hes supposed to be good plays anywher across the forward line but prefers right wing plays for Fc Caen in france got 10 goals this season and is 23..just wondering if its french paper talk or if anyone else has heard anything

  37. What would our best midfield be if Larsson signed and everybody was fit?

I like Nolan and think he is a really good asset to the team, some people will disagree but I really think he works his socks off and is a real goal threat.

Can Larsson play on the left? Cause I think HBA will be good behind Carroll

      (Quote)

  38. Like the sight toonsy was wondering where u had got to until I seen your thread on newcastle mad. Will be pleased if larrsson signs better than routledge for sure

      (Quote)

  39. What he lacks in speed he more than makes up for in ability. Hopefully can get it all wrapped up and we will see him on Sunday?
