Will Sol stay? Or will he be on his way?

London calling?
It’s January, the transfer window is open and managers are working hard to make changes within their squads. It can be a time of great excitement or dread depending on whether your club is a buying club or a selling one.

Naturally as Newcastle supporters we look at our current crop and speculate about who we could bring in to strengthen the squad. Of course thus far we have been linked with several different players in different positions, but nothing has quite materialised as of yet.

Just to bring you a line about a possible departure during the month. Veteran defender Sol Campbell is said to be attracting interest from rock bottom West Ham. The Londoners are said to want to add a bit of experience to help their chances of surviving the dreaded drop to The Championship.

Sol was brought to the club by former manager, Chris Hughton during summer. The pair go back a long way and were together at Tottenham. Chris was said to be one of the main factors in Sol’s decision to sign for The Magpies. That and Sol marrying a lass from the North-East of course!

Sol was reportedly unhappy with Chris’ sacking and took the news of his departure worse than most. No doubt about it, Chris was the players choice and it did upset the dressing room. With talk still regular that Sol would like to exit the club, it seems likely that boss Alan Pardew will allow the former England international to move on.

Sol’s fitness and form has been brought into question during his short time at Newcastle. He has only managed six senior appearances for the club to date and in truth has looked a bit off the pace when he has played. That’s maybe being a little unfair to a player that has been unlucky with injuries, but I don’t think Sol would be much of a loss to the club.

I’m sure he’s still picking up a handsome salary for a player who is reaching the end of his top flight career, and I’m sure that having a player of Sol’s experience is handy for the young lads to have around the place, but if he is unhappy at that club then he is probably better of playing his football elsewhere.

As always it could be paper talk as we haven’t heard any direct quotes from the player stating he’s unhappy and wants to move on. In fact Sol has remained pretty quiet since Pardew took the reigns and his agent has recently stated that he is concentrating on playing for Newcastle whilst distancing himself from the West Ham rumours.

However, if he does want to go, is unhappy, or is wanted by another team, then I think it would be sensible to let the player leave.

Shame we couldn’t have got Sol a few years back when he was at his peak.

What do you think?

  1. I think that Sol wouldn’t be missed and I’ll be surprised if he is here at the start of Feb.

Too many rumours saying he is unhappy in my opinion.

I think that also aligns with Kadar suddenly going out to get some game time.

  2. I think he’ll hang around for a while to see where his old mate CH ends up….maybe at West Ham after all if Grant gets bladdered…

  3. nah…I think we have too little strength in depth at a crucial time of the season. Keep him at the toon til the end of the season.

  4. Hmm well providing theres no further complications with Carroll then i can see ranger sitting at number five in the pecking order for the reast of the season so it would seem a good idea to loan him out and then see how he is for the next season, whether he could actually start matches for us and partner carroll. However with Carroll currently out and probably out for the mackem game as well unfortunately..and with Shola’s consistent hammy injuries, and Best and Lovers lack of physicality then maybe he should be kept around? With no cup games its very hard for me to see Ranger getting a look into our squad, he made a good impact vs liverpool but at the end of the day they’re arguably the worst defense in the league, and he’s been poor before and after that. I’d loan him out maybe with an option to recall in case of severe injuries, and hopefully a guarantee of starting matches, but thats quite a tall order especially for a CC squad..think it would be kinda pointless loaning out any lower than that.

  5. In regards to Sol- theres no doubt he was a quality CB in his prime, but he’s a joke now. He won’t be starting for us, and I think it makes more sense to have the younguns play rather than wasting time and money on Sol. Still…probably better than Perch eh 🙂

  6. I think Worky had a moment of humility and actually did say he would allow Shitman and Startrek back on his blog. His envy at Toonsys blog is there for all to see.
He then remembered he is incapable of laughing at himself and is now pretending it wasn’t him.

  7. They want a bonus if we qualify for the UEFA cup? That shouldn’t be much of an issue then considering the chances of that are incredibly slim. Maybe we’re talking ourselves up to him? lol

  8. He’s still played excellently for us. He was top notch against Chelsea and it was claimed he was still one of the quickest in the Arsenal team last year. He’s certainly not what he once was but I dont think you can call him a joke. He was playing CL football at Arsenal last season.

  9. Well, aye I won’t doubt he played well for Arsenal, I know some Gooners who were gutted we’d got him instead of them, but arsenal hardly prides itself on its defenders, and actually I’d say 3/4 of our back line is better than their first team..He’s been dodgy in almost all of our games-not sure if you’re on about the CC chelski match or the Prem one-but he was very dodgy in the CC match, colliding with Krul without calling for it etc. He was supposed to bring pace to our backline as well but I haven’t seen that. Maybe he felt he could just pick up wages at the toon…or just prefered laandan? I can’t see his performances getting better after Hughtons departure, and he’s easily fourth choice CB in my reckoning..even after Williamsons poor show at stevenage.

  10. Right. That’s enough. I wanted to try and build something different from .org here but I can see I’m going to struggle because people seem intent on causing shit.

I’ve spent my own time and money trying get this place going and I’m not letting multiple posters ruin it.

if I have to take steps to stop this it would be a shame but it will also be something I have to do.

    It stops now!!!

  11. I think Sol will be on his way, I do think CH was one of the main draws for him to come here in the 1st place. I just dont think he has what is needed he could do an odd game a month or so but we have others that can do that so might as well free up some cash for someone else

  12. I don’t thik i like the sound of Ziani if i’m honest. Reports suggest he and Ben Arfa had a fall out whilst at marseille, and anything which could disturb the dressing room isn’t something we need right now, especially as Ben Arfa is a top player, and no doubt better than Ziani. Other reports are saying he has been leasding a player revolt against Mclaren, again the sort of character we don’t need here. As well as this, he seems to have shifted from club to club. In my eyes this suggests he could be diifficult to manage or be inconsistant in his play.
The more i look into it, the more I hope we don’t sign him, especially as it was rumoured his preferred destination was France but none of them will take him permanently, and maybe we should be asking ourselves why?

      (Quote)

  13. Good point Toonsy…Didn’t know about the falling out with Arfa though, if its true it would be a terrible move..Arfa’s already proven he can be a fiery character himself, no point giving him any reason to leave us before he’s even really started playing like..

  14. I was meaning the league game. As for why he’s here, he’s married to a lass from Newcastle and i’m quite sure they live here now, he probably saw it as a sensible move. I’d still like to see him stay as when called upon I think he could do a job but if we’re cutting the wage bill and Pards doesn’t rate him, he’ll go i suppose.

  15. I personally wouldn’t hesitate. Nee point in people arsing it up for everyone else, regardless of who it is doing it. Get the ban hammer out! lol

  16. Ziani won’t happen. The club are distancing themselves from the deal via the media. We probably enquired as an option, but I think the rest is all rumour mill rubbish.

      (Quote)

  17. Also, I see SWP’s agent is dragging our name through the gutter press again. Claiming we are “an option” for his client. F**k off, man!

I suggest that you name & shame the imposters on this site, do not allow them to ruin the good work and cash that have you have invested.

    Feck em, I say.

  19. However, here is a piece of REAL transfer news

We are in talk with Cardiff over Jay Bothroyd. Good signing if true. I like him.

  20. Workyticket – the real one.

You are a liar, a proven liar, a back editor of blogs. You treat people like they are scum, when the contrary is true.

Your popularity, or lack of it is obvious for all to see.

You are now posting on a blog where there is freedom of speech, and there is humour, you arent censoring or banning anyone, nor do you have any right to tell Toonsy how to run his blog.

You are disliked for being you, people mock you as you have no sense of humour.

You are in a terrible place in you life arent you, you leech off the work of others, scrounge money at folks doors for your own financial gain then only to put them down and insinuate they are a “racist” – disgustingly made up out of thin air- and what did you do when the world turned on you – you figuratively cried hardship and ill health – like all bullies and wife beaters, when you are beaten you cry and look for sympathy – here there is none for you – we see you for what you are.

Even now folk can see you crawling and being the false you to get others to help with your blog. Sickeningly crawling. Most leave you in time Worky, getting to know you is an unpleasant experience.

We all knew the blogger posting under your name with humour wasnt you, because it was funny.

I am also surprised you arent slagging Toonsy off again like you did the other day saying he had taken Copyright from you in the blog, only when Toonsy caught you at it, the posts disappeared once more “conveniently some might say” in the blog move.

Now look in the mirror and ask yourself what it feels like to be a proven liar, to be unpopular, to be disliked, to have no humour, to never apologise…a lonely lonely world me thinks.

Jog on…back to your own blog little boy – many dislike you, thats why they left you, take the hint – creep.

  21. Kranjcar would be good, but Spurs like to mug people off when it comes to buying their players. Also, he can only really play on the left or AM. For some reason he is incapable of performing on the right, which just happens to be our weakest wing.

  22. Very harsh. People need to stop taking this internet stuff so seriously. It’s a blog. Nothing more. Let’s keep it light hearted, eh?

  23. I hope Sol stays, know the wages will be high, but think he would be good cover, also think he will help the kids. Don’t know about his coaching skills, but I’m sure they could learn from him.

On another note, I was in a meeting in gov office right opp St James’ all day today, looking out of the window at times. Saw a bloke on a disability thing coming out, first person I thought off was Ice Dog and started to snigger through the meeting. Sorry Ice, know I’m out of order, but thought I had to say it

  24. Thinking about it properly, this Bothroyd deal is starting to worry me. He is a similar type player to what we already have and unless Leon Best is going the other way we might see the Carroll to Spurs news resurface… 😐

  25. I’ll tell you one day fella but it’d easier over a pint as its too boring for folks here. You know me A, I like a laugh and always “say it as it is” – so when I say in writing he is an outright liar you know it has substance. And I have the “evidence” to show it 😉

      (Quote)

  26. I second this. Sol is definitely no “joke”. He is just too old to play more than once a fortnight… 🙄

  27. El Torro,

Mate of mine recently retired as a championship ref and he highly rates Bothroyd.

  28. Reet, time to draw a line now. The person who was playing the imposter has been disposed off and won’t be back.

I’m just glad I managed to get a grip 😉

      (Quote)

  29. Yep as El Toro says apparently we’re in for Bothroyd. More talks planned after the weekend according to Caulkin of The Times. Not sure. Out of contract, so fee would be relatively cheap but he’s 28. Has pace tho.

      (Quote)

  30. If he was so good he’d already be an established premier league player by now, not a young lad, we need wingers IMO.

      (Quote)

  31. ——–Carroll———-
    Kranjcar——–Ben Arfa
    ?????–Tiote—Barton

Would make an excellent 433, if we could find someone bartonesque to play on the left of midfield

      (Quote)

  32. I suppose I’m being pretty harsh on old Sol, I don’t have anything against him, and he was quality for england and arsenal/spurs in years past and certainly much better than our world cup centre backs nowadays but in part due to this respect then I do feel quite let down. I realise why he’s here in that it was the most appropriate move for him after getting married etc-I just meant he doesn’t really seem to give his all for Newcastle, its just an impression I get that he doesn’t seem too fussed-and that he prefered playing in the CL with arsenal and pushed himself harder alongside a manager and system he knew well, rather than a possible relegation dogfight. He’s hardly trying to make a name for himself-he doesn’t need to, so maybe he figures couple of years of on/off play ing and sitting on the bench whilst picking up wages and bangin’ the missus are in order. Maybe i am being harsh-but for whatever reason we do seem to attract these types of players..just can’t see the point hanging onto him when Willo/Colo/Staylor are all ahead of him and all still have a fair amount left in them-you could argue their best years are still ahead. Just seems pointless wages when we should be giving youngsters who are apparently on the cusp of breaking into the team a chance like Kadar.

  33. i agree its the wings we must strengthen. but are you absolutely convinced by every striker in the squad out of interest?

      (Quote)

  34. It doesn’t really matter about strikers if chances aren’t being created. At the minute we have one right winger who is ineffective in the premier league whilst the other winger is a Central midfielder who happens to be doing a good job at the moment.

    A winger is a must
