Are Newcastle really interested Jay Bothroyd?

Jay Bothroyd- I hear Newcastle want me
Newcastle have today been linked with Cardiff striker Jay Bothroyd. The Mirror is speculating that Alan Pardew would like to add Bothroyd to his squad this transfer window. Jay is out of contract in the summer and should be available for a small fee.

There have been rumours on Twitter regarding Newcastle’s alleged interest in the player, with some reports suggesting that Newcastle have already held talks with Cardiff over the player, with more talks scheduled after this weekend’s derby match against Sunderland.

The Mirror article also couldn’t resist suggesting the potential arrival of Bothroyd could spark fresh doubts over the future of Andy Carroll. I’m personally sick of the persistent Carroll to Spurs rumours now, but unfortunately for as long as Andy continues to perform and develop he will always be the subject of transfer speculation. It’s what happens when a club have a talented young player on their books and it’s something that we must learn to get used to.

Bothroyd has recently been capped for England making his international bow in a friendly with France at Wembley, but is he really what we need? I have my doubts to be honest. Someone on here said earlier that Jay is similar to Leon Best in terms of his style I have to agree in truth.

Bothroyd is 28 now and is fairly well travelled if you include his various loan spells. The striker has bagged 36 goals in 96 appearances for the Cardiff, which isn’t bad, but scoring goals in The Championship and transferring that form to the Premier League is something that is easier said than done. We need a nippy striker to play off the likes of Andy Carroll in my opinion, a ‘Bellamy-type’ player.

I don’t believe Bothroyd to be much better than what we already have at the club in that position so we’ll have to see what happens with this one. Would you like to see Bothroyd arrive on Tyneside? Personally I hope this doesn’t happen as I believe that there are weaker areas of the team that can be strengthened.

In various Tweets and general gossip, other names being banded about as possible targets are Shaun Wright-Phillips and Karim Ziani.

As ever, they are unconfirmed reports, but what do you think?

We def need to keep Barton, 67k is fine for a player who is quality and actually delivering, 65k for xisco and smith ain’t so great tho
