Barton set for new deal?

Joey Barton.

Joey Barton.
Barton to be offered new deal?
There are rumours circulating today suggesting that Newcastle are on the verge of offering Joey Barton a new contract.

Sky Sports ‘understands’ that the club are willing to offer Barton a longer contract which, for a player who only has 18 months left on his current deal, is good news.

Barton has been one of our key players so far this season. Often played in an unfamiliar right wing role, the amount of assists he has for a player playing out of position is exceptional. He has really stepped up his game this season and we are starting to see why we paid Manchester City £5.8 million for his services back in 2007. It’s taken three-and-a-half years mind, but he is proving invaluable this season.

The problem, or at least the perceived problem, with Barton is that he is on one of those large contracts – £67,000 a week if you believe certain reports. This has raised doubts over the willingness of the club to offer a new deal. The player is likely to want the same wage, if not more, whilst the club is wanting to limit the wages on offer.

At the same time though, Barton has proved himself to be instrumental to the team this season. When he plays well, we play well. A high-earner he may be, but at least he is justifying his salary, unlike a Xisco or a Smith for example. Yes I know it is hard to justify that amount of money in the real world, but in football that appears to be the going rate at the moment.

Which brings me on to another point. If Barton is set for a new deal, then surely players like Jose Enrique will also be lined up for new deals?

Jose is in the same boat as Barton with regard to the time left on his contract, and he is also apparently on a decent wedge for his endeavours. Much like Barton, Jose performs to a level which you would expect from a player that is being paid so handsomely. I’m not picking on them, well maybe a little, but it’s a shame that Xisco and Smith don’t follow suit.

I’d like to hope that there is some truth to this. Barton has been a target of transfer speculation this window, but signing a new contract would pretty much end that and would also put a lid on his agent, Willie McKay.

At the end of the day it’s all about value, apparently. But surely securing players who are already earning their large salaries makes sense? It wouldn’t have much of an adverse affect on the budget as the cash is already being paid out to them.

Surely our budget can stretch that little bit further?

  1. Would be great news if its true. He is at the moment one of if the most important players in squad. Fully deserves a new contract in my opinion. Would give him a two year contract extension.

  2. Think barton is the key to our sucess this and next , he is top , for me he is the best english midfielder at the moment ,

  3. Yep, yep. Good news to tie him down. Our best player this season so far.

Although I know at least one person on here won’t be happy at this news 😆

  4. So Ashley and Pardews meeting was more about keeping players at the club, rather than bringing players in.

Under normal circumstances, under a normal owner I would say that a strategy like this is wise. Get your own players signed up on long term deals during the season and sign new players in the summer when real money can be spent. Unfortunately I don’t think this will be the way it goes, well history tells you he doesn’t do sensible!

  5. I see Blackburn have taken Santa Cruz back on loan and are looking to buy him at the end of the season…sure he loved his time at Man City, incredibly effective in their front line he was.

  6. Also, I know it’s in the mirror so it’s probably complete nonsense but what is this about Benzema agreeing to join Villa on loan should Madrid get Manny Adebeyor from City? I haven’t read the article, were there actually quotes or was it just fabricated sh!te? (i’m assuming the latter :D)

  7. I see Pienaar is available from Everton. No doubt the fact he wants paid the going rate for a bosman signing will rule us out.

  8. Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s us that have had an offer accepted. Would be pointless, though. Peinaar will never want to join with the likes of Spurs, Milan and Chelsea interested.

  9. Aye well obviously his agent and probably him, himself had nee bother sitting around being paid ridiculous wages.
I just enjoy the fact City are now having to offload players. Spent all that money, haven’t won anything and are now having to get rid of fringe squad members as they realise the

“buy ANYONE that looks like they have an ounce of talent so no one else can have them, who cares if they rot in the reserves” approach, probably wont work.

  10. Had he not signed a pre contract agreement with a “European club” to leave in the summer? Or was that just rubbish? It will be Chelsea, Spurs or Liverpool if he moves this month I reckon. I’d say Liverpool purely to try and appease the fans.

  11. I say Liverpool because of their desperation.

It doesn’t matter if the club accept, though. I would imagine Peinaar will seek the same route as Larsson and wait for the summer. In fact, he has probably already been tapped up and given his word to Spurs. Would be typical Harry “I’m a ****ing football manager!” Redknapp behaviour.

  12. AC Milan did this in the 80’s/90’s and it worked for a while. Their president at the time even admitted they bought players just so their rivals couldn’t.

  13. City are doing the same, but just in a much more practical way(for them). They have been intentionally distorting the market with their over inflated transfer offers. Whilst fans of other clubs laugh and ridicule CIty, their own clubs moan and curse at no longer being able to bolster their squads at reasonable price. Thus rapidly speeding up City’s progression whilst stagnating that of others. Very smart.

  14. That could be the European club that he’s signed the pre contract agreement with then. When they said I European that indicated to me it was outside the premier league, but now there’s talk of them having accepted offers etc which means i suppose it could be a Prem club.

  15. As a South African, I’d be delighted if we signed Pienaar. I very much doubt we’d stand a chance though with some tops clubs after him but I wish him well for he has always been a consistent player with good technical ability.

  16. A couple of my mates support Everton and they can’t stand him to be fair. They see him as greedy, both with the ball and with money, and are glad to see him going.

  17. I’ve watched him closely and I certainly don’t think he’s a greedy player. He has perhaps been greedy in the sense that he’s turned down their contract offer but let’s be honest, he is a player capable of playing for a big club and Everton have been going backwards this season after a few good seasons so perhaps it is time for him to leave. One could never doubt his commitment on the field though.

Isn’t that what all supporters say when one of their best players want to leave?

Also I just don’t get this greedy thing. The way some people go on is that they would turn down the offer of another job on a bigger salary. It’s bollox! Money talks and **** walks.

Everyone would do the same, just because their footballers doesn’t mean their any different.

  19. To be fair, they’ve been saying it for more than just this season, and they watch every game so I’m inclined to believe them.

It really annoys me when people say, “…their a good team”, or “their not as good as last season”

Guys, can we please distinguish between ‘their’ and ‘they’re’.

I don’t mean to be pedantic. It’s just a request as it really irritates me. Thanks

So really, you are being pedantic 😉

They must be completely mental, what is that decision based on? His form? Pity as his ex-captain nailed his missus? Glad those days are gone for us!
