Call me paranoid, but……

Andy Carroll
Injured, but for how long?
This time last year we were going well. We had almost forgotten about the nightmare of relegation and possibly ‘doing a Leeds’ and were sitting pretty at the top of The Championship.

Then in January we were dealt a bit of a blow, or at least we thought it was a bit of a blow at the time, with the news that Steven Taylor, who had been formidable in defence alongside Coloccini, was likely to be sidelined for a few weeks with a knee injury.

Doom and gloom set among some supporters, thoughts that the squad couldn’t cope and that we were bound to fall from our position at the top of the table were rife. Signings had to be made, and quickly too. In came Fitz Hall and Mike Williamson to provide cover for the centre-back position and dispel our fears, which originally they failed to do, but Mike Williamson soon proved his worth.

It was around this time that I can recall somebody posting on anoher ‘blog that he or she had heard that Steven Taylor would not play again that season. How we laughed at this nonsense and ridiculed them for posting such obvious rubbish, if Steven Taylor was going to be missing for the rest of the season the club would announce this straight away? Or would they?

In hindsight, there was perhaps a few good reasons to keep the truth about the injury quiet during the month of January.

Knowing that one of our best players of the season would be missing the second half of it would be a big psychological boost to our promotion rivals. The hostility towards our owner would have increased as we demand a good replacement in order to remain competitive in our quest for promotion back to the Premier League. If we approached a club for the services of one of their players in that position, they would more than likely hold us to ransom knowing that a ‘panic buy’ might be on the cards.

So it was much better during January to just take a match at a time and say that unfortunately Steven Taylor won’t be fit to play. Only when the cover arrived did the club finally declare that Steven Taylor was indeed likely to miss the rest of the season.

I hope I’m wrong (and I usually am!) but I’m beginning to get a feeling of deja-vu about this now. I just hope and pray that the powers that be at our great club are not quietly trying to sign a forward because maybe Andy Carroll’s injury is worse than we are being lead to believe?

Hopefully it’s just me being paranoid….

  1. This is just what me and my dad were talking about on the metro coming back from the Sunderland game, to me, it looks like Carroll’s injury was makorly underestimated, maybe to the extent that he had possibly torn it slightly.

If he is back for the Spurs game, how long would he have been out? 6 weeks? 7 weeks?

  3. well i guess the short term highlight is his injury has prevented any potential transfer, if he was fit and spent the last coupla weeks i wouldnt of trusted honest arry to not go for it and chubby chops to accept it and spend the dosh on a night in the casino with the sinsiter owl look alike. the temptation woulda been there i think!
Long term i see your concern jay jay, lets just hope its not the case!

I used to work with a guy who was very proud that he got to “Dot the I” once during a game.

My school doesn’t even have a team…so, I have to live vicariously through other people who went to “real” universities.

  8. Sorry, I couldn’t resist…it’s the smart-ass in me…

I have to say though…I am a little surprised at the lack of comments today. I generally am only able to get on well into my day and well after about 100 comments have been made. This is a rare treat. Though, I have missed the banter.

  9. Actually, it’s a beautiful f-ing day! It’s like 70 degrees F outside right now, with barely a cloud to see. Winds are light at best…if they’re there at all. AND I AM STUCK INSIDE WORKING RIGHT NOW! Well…I suppose that’s better than being without…but man, this is my type of day.
