Do you dare to dream?

Too soon for talk of Europe?
Well this Premier League football stuff is turning out to be easier than I thought.

Newcastle sit in 7th place in the table having played 23 games, which could turn out to be a European spot comw the end of the season.

Dare I say it? Should we be aiming to stay there and try to bag a European place? Surely not. That would be preposterous, off with my deluded head and so on. Am I really being too optimistic though?

I don’t think I am to be honest. We are up there in the table so why not try an make hay while the sun shines? We have some key players to come back, and we have a run of fixtures now that doesn’t incorcorporate many of the teams that are currently above us. If we can keep doing what we are doing then why couldn’t we get that extra European spot?

Being realistic though, it would be a big ask, and it would be a massive achievement if we could pull it off. I’m just looking at our fixtures, and looking at the players we have to come back, and also the attitude of the team at present, and wondering whether or not we could actually do it.

The priority at the start of the season was to avoid relegation, and it still is I guess. I think we will do that, although nothing is certain of course, but the quicker we can achieve that the quicker we can push on and see just how many points we can actually achieve this season.

Europe may be too soon for us, but the fact that we are at least in with a shout for a late season push towards it is a fantastic sign. We have a team that can beat anyone on their day, and despite missing some key players, has been denied six points from two top six sides by last gasp equalisers. That isn’t bad at all in my opinion.

Once you add Andy Carroll and Cheik Tiote back into the team we will look a lot stronger, plus we have Hatem Ben Arfa and Dan Gosling to come back into contention. Gosling may be a bit of an unknown quantity at the moment, but we know what the other three can add to the team, and all of them will improve it.

It may be too soon for us to talk of Europe, but given that we find ourselves in 7th place it would be a shame if we were to start slipping down the table. If we just avoided relegation I would be pretty disappointed. Not because our season would have been a failure, but because we could, and have, done so much better.

What do you think?

  1. What are the rules on Europa positions? I always thought it was 5th was automatic qualification and 6&7th put you into the first qualification round, having said that I actually have no idea how the new system works!

  3. We’ll need a lot of luck with injuries.

I agree that Gosling and HBA coming back will give us a huge boast. When is HBA back?

I can’t see us doing it without Carroll though, he’s that important to us.

  4. Stu – HBA is due back in training at start of Feb apparently, although full match fitness wise who knows??? Depends on hoiw long it takes, set-backs etc.

Carroll will be back for our next game hopefully.

  5. So it could take 4-6 weeks before he’s ready to get back into a match situation?

Ask Stardick, he’ll know from his experience in playing Champions League. 😛

  6. Not the time to aim for it. Maybe after we reached the 40points,then we shall aim for it?

    10points/3points each game=around 3 wins+1draw more.

    HWTL.

  7. I’ve ear marked Birmingham, West Brom and up until recently Wolves for home wins that should do it. Although Wolves have thrown in some good results recently.

Away games at Brum, Fulham and Blackburn I also see as possible 3 points.

We will need Carroll though, especially the away games.

  14. hahaha exaclty what I thought about Taraabt, he does seem a bit greedy like doesn’t he. Like that chance he made for himself on the left and he chose to shoot from a tight angle when two people were unmarked in the middle.

Still, good player, just seems like he needs a slap, but in a 4-5-1 away from home with him playing off Carroll? Nice

  15. To be fair to Taarabt, i’ve branded him greedy but he’s scored 13 goals and made 10 assists this season.

  16. hahaha 60 yard ball, controls it with his thigh, goes through two players, curls it in to the top corner.

aye he’s a canny player like, excited by what i’ve seen this first half, hope we’re in for him

  17. toonsy-Aye, free to all Sky customers. I dunno what they’re planning on showing, but i’ve got alot of HBO stuff in box sets.

  18. What I’m waiting for is cheaper 3D TV sets. I reckon that will be the new HD and HD will be the new regular TV.

      (Quote)

  19. Toonsy-Same, but I reckon it’s going to take a while like. A few years yet. They’re ridiculously expensive now like and from what i’ve seen, not actually THAT impressive.

I’m still waiting for blu-ray prices to drop mate, lol. Paying 20-25 quid for a dvd is f*ckin shockin.

  20. aye toonsy there not much oot there to go with a 3d tele,in a few years time there bringing oot 3d tele with oot the glasses

      (Quote)

  21. Surely they can do it without the glasses now? I mean why can’t they put a film or something over the screen that has the same effect?

For the conpiracy theorists out there, there is already a load of technology out there ready to be used anyway, but it is being held back so the tech companies can make more £££ 😉

  22. Toonsy-Have you watched any of the football in the pub in 3D? There’s a pub by me that has all the games on in 3D like but i haven’t been down to have a decent look yet.
I’ve briefly seen some golf like, my mates old man bought one a few weeks ago and loves it.

      (Quote)

  23. Ross – Nah mate. Where I live at the minute is only just about getting to grips with the wheel so nobody shows 3D.

In fact if anyone had 3D I reckon they’d get beat up for being flashy 😆

  24. TOONSY been reading up on 3d sets on panasonic site, yes they havethem without glasses but not quite cracked for public sale, seem to be putting a lot of work into wireless tv and dvd players like

      (Quote)

  25. Funny that Ice. Not ready for public yet, so we’ll put these ones for sale first and when these new ones are out people can buy them aswell 😉

  26. Toonsy-I’ve already said to my mate i’ll get my PS3 and GT5 round his to try it on the 3D tele like. I have a 42″ Sony Bravia just now and it looks the b0llocks on that.

I enjoy my games like, when the prices of the Tele’s drop and games are being made as standard in 3D inside a few years, that’s when i’ll consider one.
