Is Ireland on his way?

Set for loan spell?
Stephen Ireland is a player that we have been linked with a lot over the past couple of weeks, and it’s been said that Alan Pardew would like to take the Villa misfit on loan for the rest of the season.

Sky Sports is reporting this morning that Newcastle are in pole position to take the player on loan for the rest of the season. Ireland’s excessive wages could be a stumbling block as the Irishman is said to be pocketing 72k a week, and in all honesty you’d have to assume that Villa would want us to cover his wages in full.

Ireland joined Aston Villa from Man City in the summer and thus far it has been an ill-fated move for both player and club. Stephen has been unable to produce the goods for the Midlands club since arriving whilst the players attitude and application has been called into question at times.

Stephen showed glimpses of brilliance during his time at Manchester City and even scooped their Player of the Season award at one point. Since then he has struggled for form and failed to cement a place in the starting line up at City, and now he can’t even find his way into the Villa squad. He has been training with the reserves, though he has had injury concerns as of late.

Maybe a move is just what the 24-year-old needs? Maybe Newcastle could be the club that takes a chance on him? I do believe that Ireland has a lot of ability and could be a shrewd signing for the short term. He hasn’t been at his best in a while but you dont lose talent overnight. Maybe the Villa move just didn’t suit the player?

If anything the concern I have is the players attitude. The days of Newcastle bringing in ‘bling boys’ with attitude are a thing of the past so you would hope that he doesn’t have a negative affect on the dressing room.

Of course Stephen knows Joey Barton from Man City and if Ireland could come in and play with Joey whilst producing performances like the ones that we have seen from Barton this season it would be a good thing.

A lot of if’s in there, but if it was right financially right would you welcome Stephen for the short term at least? I know people have discussed this before but it seems as if there maybe some truth in the interest for Ireland.

What do you think?

  1. Awww, such a shame for the man. How we will miss his incisive, objective and entirely ubiased insight into the game we love.

Attract a new owner as easy as the last two times it’s been up for sale, in the last 18 months?
