Alan Pardew has admitted he is considering bringing in free agent Jeremie Aliadiere to fill in for the injured Shola Ameobi. Aliadiere is currently unemployed and has been training with former club Middlesbrough in a bid to regain fitness following injury.
Newcastle find themselves light in the striking department with Nile Ranger, Peter Lovenkrands and Leon Best the only available senior forwards at the club, following Shola’s facial injury sustained on Wednesday night at Craven Cottage.
Pardew was left with little time to replace Andy Carroll on transfer deadline day. Alan however had stated a couple of weeks ago that he was in fact happy with the strikers situation at Newcastle, hinting that a signing a new striker wasn’t a priority.
Of course Carroll was still a Newcastle player then but was injured at that point and still is, so even if Andy remained at the club we’d still be in the same position we are now squad wise. With Ameobi out injured it once again exposes our lack of strength in depth.
When asked about the possibility of bringing in the former Arsenal and Boro striker Aliadiere on a short term deal Pardew said:
“It is a possibility. We have to explore every avenue. We are short on bodies.”
Jeremie will hardly have Newcastle fans shouting from the rooftops, it would certainly underwhelm most, but as Alan states we do need to fill the squad out a bit. The Frenchman is hardly prolific and is unlikely to score the goals we need, it’s simple we need someone who can score in this league. It’s frustrating that the club didn’t really think the latter fact through when the window was open.
I’m not talking about replacing Carroll, I mean we knew Andy was struggling with injury before he departed and with the greatest of respects to the other strikers at the club they haven’t shown evidence that they can score on a consistent basis. I did an article recently highlighting our current striker’s abilities, I’m not actually complaining about the current crop, do I think Leon has done well recently? Yes I do, but do I think he can score 8-10 goals? No I don’t.
Shola is known for his niggling injuries anyway and I just wonder why this wasn’t taken into account when the transfer window was open and we could do something about it? Even in the dying stages of the window we tried to sign a winger and though we certainly lack creativity at the best of times, surely a center forward should have been the focus.
Anyway window shut and all the above irrelevant now, looking at who’s without a club at the moment could be the short term fix. We probably won’t be able to find the type of player we need right now but with our injury hit squad any extra bodies would surely be welcome? Let’s not forget we are without Hatem Ben Arfa, both Taylors, Dan Gosling, Stephen Ireland and now Ameobi too.
Meanwhile The Daily Mail are today reporting that Newcastle are close agreeing a deal with Rennes midfielder Sylvain Marveaux. The player is out of contract in the summer and is able to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club. It is claimed by the paper that Newcastle’s chief scout Graham Carr has identified Syvain as Wayne Routledge’s replacement and that the club are close to a deal. Although it’s the Mail so it’s probably about as true to it’s word as Andy Carroll.
