Jose Enrique shows his quality again.

Jose is the man
Jose Enrique is certainly getting the credit he deserves these days.

The brilliant Spaniard continues to put in eye catching performances this season, and Saturday was no different as the left-back showed everyone exactly why Alan Pardew and the Toon Army hold him in such high regard.

Jose has less than 18 months remaining on his current deal on Tyneside and despite stating his happiness at Newcastle on several occasions he has opted to see if the club retain Premier League status before renegotiating a new deal with the club. That’s fair enough when we all know the player is way to good to be playing in the second tier of English football, something that he has already done when he was loyal enough to stick with Newcastle after the disaster of relegation in 2009.

The Daily Mirror website claim that Liverpool are sniffing around Enrique and plan to raid the North East for a second time in the summer following the capture of another of our best players on deadline day last month. The left-back isn’t short of admirers with Manchester United also said to be keen on the player. Of course paper talk is just gossip and should be taken with a pinch of salt, but true or not you have to believe it’s only a matter of time before the big boys come knocking.

Jose put in another excellent shift against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, and he was by far the best player on the pitch. The more I see him play the more I am in utter disbelief that he hasn’t had a full international call up to the Spanish team. He has adapted well to the English game and has super strength, you hardly ever see him lose out on a one on one situation, and he’s great going forward too with an excellent delivery of him.

Many were dubious when Jose arrived on Tyneside and it’s fair to say that it took the lad a bit of time to adapt. I remember his positioning was very poor when he first arrived from Villareal for £6.3 million, a fee that seemed a little inflated at the time. Enrique for me started looking very good in the Premier League prior to relegation, but a year in The Championship obviously did him a bit of good and he has continued to grow as a footballer.

Joey Barton stated last week that he intends to pen a new deal despite the club not yet ensuring it’s safety in the top division. The Scouse midfielder also said he thought him signing a new deal would send out the right message to others, maybe he means the dressing room as well as the fans?

In an ideal world the club will move swiftly to get Joey’s contract ready and on the table, and hopefully Jose can follow suite and if we pick up another couple of wins sooner rather than later perhaps the defender will be ready to commit himself to the club.

With £35 million odd now in the transfer kitty (allegedly), many questions will be asked about who Newcastle will bring in although, as has been stated a million times, keeping the current talent is just as important. The likes of Barton, Tiote, Enrique are the future and keeping them at this club will be equally as important as bringing in quality. Jose’s performance on Saturday shows exactly why he is getting well deserved recognition.

I doubt there’s one person on this blog who doubts Enrique’s importance? Also, how piss poor are Blackburn? what a disgraceful display by Kean’s team on Saturday.

  1. The sooner are safe the sooner we can start planning for the summer on every aspect! But José for me only behind Cole and Evra in the league in his position.

  2. It’s a close call like i have to say but who have thought we would be saying our left backs just as good if not better than Man U’s when we had Babyaro 🙄

  3. haha babyaro was pure pony… i still shudder when i think sourness starting back 4 was carr boumsong bramble babayaro.
that makes me wince even thinking about it.

  4. It was just an absolute shambles. Off the top of my head i don’t think there’s one player who he bought who is still at the club now, some legacy ehh 😆

  6. Amdy Faye just makes me sad thinking about him 🙁

And i think he brought Lee Clark and Solano back if i remember correctly but that’s about 50m spent and god knows how much on wages and we got pretty much zilch in return!

  7. Hard to argue with any of that Mark, although I think it’s more and more likely that we will lose him in the summer 🙁

  8. we could be 40 – 50 million richer come the summer
    Enrique 15 mil
    Tiote 20 mil
    Jose 10 mil

If we get a bidding war going we could prob add another 10 mil to that, there’ll be a load more players out of contract in the summer so we won’t have to spend much on signings and wages ….. Wahooo

  9. Enrique was amazing against Blackburn. I know some might be against this but I would first try to sign up Jose before Barton. Jose Enrique needs to be given a new deal, as he is amongst the top four left backs in the league. Only Cole, Evra and Baines can compare!

  10. He’ll be gone, if not this summer then the Jan window or following summer… 😥 😥 …………Ashley oot 👿

  11. Getting somebody signed up to a new contract is no guarantee they will stay – as we saw with AC. There is no doubt that somebody can afford to pay Jose or Tiote or Colo, or even HBA more than we ever could.

What is more likely to keep them here is a few quality signings in the winter (yeah, yeah, but it’s winter to me). We have to show some ambition, otherwise we’re fooked.

  12. Toonsy…I can’t even read comments on there these days, I read a few shake my head then give up. There’s one or 2 decent posters, as for te rest…whey words fail me, each to their own I s’pose 🙄

  13. Some of the names they want are…… staggering to say the least.

Lukaku – Who is wanted by just about every top club in Europe.
Loads of unknown foreigners – Who will have no doubt impressed them on their various Football Manager computer games.
    Huntelaar – Yep, ok then
    Podoloski – Aye ok then

    🙄

Makes me fecking angry man 😡

  14. I think what the club needs do is sign a quality young player before the end of the season, once survival is ensured. Announce it just before our last game of the season with the hope that whoever that player is, it will encourage those that are here to stay.

I remember last season, before the World Cup started, Barcelona announced the signing of David Villa. Now I feel we should try and do something similar, for it showed that Barcelona mean business and that it could be a draw for other players to join. Ofcourse we won’t be able to get a player of Villa’s quality but it will be a statement of intent and the scouts have three months to identify that quality player.

  15. Fact is, we are a selling club and it wont change for the forseeable future. Its not good for the fans but great for the owner, agents and players who will all fill their pockets and we will be left with an Ossie Ardilles era type team.
They know, and have done for decades, that we are loyal to an almost insane level and it doesnt matter what pain they inflict, we will still pay at the little window.

  17. I must admit that I do get the impression we are placing Enrique in the shop window with all this talk of delaying contract negotiations etc. The Journal are suggesting his head may have been turned by all of the recent interest in him. Unfortunately, I think he will go in the summer. 🙁

      (Quote)

  18. I agree with you there ET if he is saying that he wants to ensure we avoid the drop and then negotiate its puts anyone who is interested in him in a strong position as most clubs will blow us out of the water when it comes to wages. hopefully he will want to stick with us for helping to develop his game

  19. Batty – It’s the cheap option mate. Anniversary and Valentines all in one present. It’s her birthday in 12 days aswell so I ca combine all three 😆

I’m taking her to the Bolton game for her birthday 😉

  20. Van Arenholt is 20 now and is on loan again, maybe time he settled in a team, reckon Chelsea would be up for selling if we got rid of Enrique?
    How much £4mil?

      (Quote)

  21. “Ye Tiote’s a goner, Enriques a goner, Coloccini. We are going to sell all of them!!! We are putting them all in the shop window…”

Jees, you lot are a negative bunch of sods. Right now these lads are still here giving their all for the Toon and you lot have set their price tags and have lined up replacements for them already.

If Ashley does sell them you’ll only have yourself to blame for putting the though of easy acceptance in his mind.
