The brilliant Spaniard continues to put in eye catching performances this season, and Saturday was no different as the left-back showed everyone exactly why Alan Pardew and the Toon Army hold him in such high regard.
Jose has less than 18 months remaining on his current deal on Tyneside and despite stating his happiness at Newcastle on several occasions he has opted to see if the club retain Premier League status before renegotiating a new deal with the club. That’s fair enough when we all know the player is way to good to be playing in the second tier of English football, something that he has already done when he was loyal enough to stick with Newcastle after the disaster of relegation in 2009.
The Daily Mirror website claim that Liverpool are sniffing around Enrique and plan to raid the North East for a second time in the summer following the capture of another of our best players on deadline day last month. The left-back isn’t short of admirers with Manchester United also said to be keen on the player. Of course paper talk is just gossip and should be taken with a pinch of salt, but true or not you have to believe it’s only a matter of time before the big boys come knocking.
Jose put in another excellent shift against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, and he was by far the best player on the pitch. The more I see him play the more I am in utter disbelief that he hasn’t had a full international call up to the Spanish team. He has adapted well to the English game and has super strength, you hardly ever see him lose out on a one on one situation, and he’s great going forward too with an excellent delivery of him.
Many were dubious when Jose arrived on Tyneside and it’s fair to say that it took the lad a bit of time to adapt. I remember his positioning was very poor when he first arrived from Villareal for £6.3 million, a fee that seemed a little inflated at the time. Enrique for me started looking very good in the Premier League prior to relegation, but a year in The Championship obviously did him a bit of good and he has continued to grow as a footballer.
Joey Barton stated last week that he intends to pen a new deal despite the club not yet ensuring it’s safety in the top division. The Scouse midfielder also said he thought him signing a new deal would send out the right message to others, maybe he means the dressing room as well as the fans?
In an ideal world the club will move swiftly to get Joey’s contract ready and on the table, and hopefully Jose can follow suite and if we pick up another couple of wins sooner rather than later perhaps the defender will be ready to commit himself to the club.
With £35 million odd now in the transfer kitty (allegedly), many questions will be asked about who Newcastle will bring in although, as has been stated a million times, keeping the current talent is just as important. The likes of Barton, Tiote, Enrique are the future and keeping them at this club will be equally as important as bringing in quality. Jose’s performance on Saturday shows exactly why he is getting well deserved recognition.
I doubt there’s one person on this blog who doubts Enrique’s importance? Also, how piss poor are Blackburn? what a disgraceful display by Kean’s team on Saturday. « Have we improved under Alan Pardew? | Lovenkrands: “Now we’ve got a chance, we need to go and prove it.” »
