Birmingham 0-2 Newcastle video highlights.

I’ve managed to dig out some highlights of last night’s win at Birmingham City for us all to watch over again.

It was a great win that eases the pressure on Newcastle and places them in the driving seat to secure Premier League survival, and perhaps maybe push on to a top ten finish? He who dares and all that…

Alan Pardew was understandably delighted with the result that leaves Newcastle sitting in ninth place in the table, a full eight points ahead of 18th placed Wigan. Indeed Pardew deserves a portion of credit for the result as he called his team selection, tactics and substitutions spot on, although I have no doubt that some will find a reason not to give out any credit where it is due.

“It was a really fantastic performance from us – the fans, the team, everybody,” Pardew told nufc.co.uk. “It was a resounding win. We did all of the things you need to do away from home – we had to slow the game at times, but we also had to quicken it up. And when we quickened it up we caused them problems.”

“We’ve had two clean sheets since the Arsenal game. There was Blackburn and now a great result, a fantastic result like this.”

Well played to everyone.

  1. I’m pleasantly gobsmacked. All the signs – right down to the veg-patch of a pitch – pointed to a nil-nil, yet here we are: clean sheet and two cracking goals.

Jonas was just amazing; without him I think we may well have failed to score. Any jibes about lack of crossing ability must now be put to bed; the guy was just superb last night.

  2. Also, Pardew showed how he’s taking the matter of seeing out games seriously. Introducing Sol at the end was a strong statement to that effect. It was frustrating to watch, and I thought they defended too deep at times in the last 20 minutes, but hey – whatever works, Pards. 😀

  3. Credit where it’s due, Whumpie, of course.

But 2 decent crosses doesn’t make him Beckham overnight. Not when you look back at some of the dross he’s dished out on a weekly basis.

Hopefully last night is the sign of things to come though. End product has always been the one vital and priceless ingredient missing from Jonas’ game. Let’s hope he’s found some.

  4. Quite right, TC, of course. It’s a bit like Best’s hat trick; nice to watch, but not necessarily a sign of things to come.

I do rate Jonas, though. I think because he gets into dangerous positions so many times in a match, we see moves break down a lot so get a worse impression than is fair. All that matters is the quantity – not the proportion – of good end product. I don’t care if he makes 100 runs and only 5 lead to decent crosses; it’s the same end result as making 5 and all of them working.

Am I making any sense? 😕

  5. Jose and Jonas are working better than ever at the moment. Fantastic to watch. This lopsided approach, with completely different attacking styles on the left and right seems to be working nicely. We need Simpson to keep improving in his attacking play, but it’s definitely coming along nicely. Just need more striking options to make it all work better. Leon “Yarp” Best seems to be getting the idea…

(Was Hughton right about everything??) 😎

  6. Just before Best leaps for that ball at the back stick you can see him saying to Jonas, “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?” 😆

  7. Aye you’re right Ice. Dunno why anyone would wanna waste their breath talking about them whinging drama queens??

  8. I may do a very unusual thing and watch another club’s game. I may have to record it and watch it in the small hours, though. With the rugby on at the moment too I’m taking the **** with the missus and my bloke time at the moment!
Great to watch the game in the pub last night, especially with the Manure fans saying “here comes their first goal” every time Brum had a corner or free kick.

  9. I hope Barca lose tonight. I can’t stand it when pundits say things like, “You can’t beat Barca at their own game” or “You have to defend if you want anything from the game” It’s TOTAL DROSS! This is football, anyone can beat anyone on their day regardless of tactics.

  10. Im not really bothered aslong as theres good football for the neutral. I want as many eglish teams to go through as possible but at the same time it would be funny if Barca play them off the park.

  11. Does anybody think there is a group of teams in the premiership that are just basically shyte but with a good set piece taker and a load of big donkeys or a giant to bounce it in the net. 😛

  12. Aaaahnyway. As someone said: enough about 22 whiny drama queens.

    Looking ahead:

Bolton, h: 3pts. Revenge for our only league tonking of the season, please.
Everton, h: 3pts. They are very beatable right now. (41 pts and safety)
Stoke a: 1 pt. Don’t know why, we just have trouble with this lot.
    Wolves h: 3pts. Because it’s them.
    Villa a: 1 pt.
Manure h: 0 pts, because we have to lose to someone. Dammit.
Blackpool a: 3 pts. I think we’ll have enough by then, including Benny back.
Liverpool a: 0 pts. You just know what’s going to happen, sadly..
    Birmingham h: 3pts (Oba who?)
    Chelski a: 0 pts
    Baggies h: 3pts

I actually think we’ll beat one of Manure, Chelski or Liverpool; just don’t know which.

Anyway – that takes us to 55 points, which last leason would have put us (I think) 8th. This year I suspect it’d be good enough for 7th. Which is nice.

  13. WHUMPIE think 43 points will see us home 14th,would like more like, bolton a sticky one like, you know what the toons like after a canny run, would be nice to break that mould like 😀

  15. Perhaps I need the rosiness on my specs toned down a bit. 😳

Still – you have to admit that we have a lot more winnable games coming up than we’ve had of late. I know we’ll have some howlers, but we’ll also have some unexpected points.

Even if you just take our current points to game ratio (1.3 roughly) that means we should hit 50 pts. All I’m saying is that we’ll be slightly better in the run-in than we’ve been up to now. I think the Blackpools of the league will start to falter, while we’ve got big players coming back.

  16. Lets not forget where we’re at and where we’ve just came from. One win against Birmingham City and people are dreaming of Europe. 😕

  17. DJG

I think we are in a position to start to think about Europe, we are two points off a potential European spot after all. And there are only 11 games left. Why shouldn’t we aim high?

      (Quote)

  18. Also it’s only the 5th time that they have lost at home since being promoted, so it is a big win, although i do see your point, I just don’t see any reason why we can’t finish 7th?

      (Quote)

  19. I couldn’t care less for English teams in Europe if I am honest. I generally dont want them to do well as it nets them more money if they do meaning they can buy our players. Plus, I hate Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs etc etc etc. Pretty much everyone.
If I would see anyone succeed would have to be Man Utd, as they are northern and not Liverpool.

On the plus side, the way the european co-efficiency (is that right or did i just make that up?) works benefits us as it provides us with more european places from the league.

“Exactly, why not aim for Europa league? If we don’t get it fair enough but if we aim to finish 17th thats when you can finish 18th. If the mackems can aim for Europe so can we for god sake. At least we’ve been to Europe” 😉 😆

      (Quote)

  21. DJG,

I was dreaming of Europe while we were still in the championship mate, never mind the win at brum!!

Pardew is a salesman, of course he is aiming for Europe. Also, isn’t his salary based also based on league finish?

  22. richietoon, well played mate,

just shows DJG changes his opinion on a daily basis and isn’t to be listened to!

  23. That’s what it’s all about, dreams and hopes, often shattered but every now and again they come true and those days make it all worthwhile and that’s why we all love football and the Toon 😀

  24. iam so glad we got rid of clueless as i think we would be near the bottom by now ,clueless his name clueless he was 😉

  25. Well if we beat Bolton, which will put us above them at least, then yes; then I will say game on! But I think it’s very dangerous to get your hopes up as a toon fan. I don’t mean aim to finish 17th or anything like that, this is a weird season but usually theres a difference in what it takes to finish 10th and what it takes to finish 7th.

      (Quote)

  26. Just enjoy the ride, it’s been a canny season so far with some great results along the way, safety’s the first target owt else is a bonus.
Personally, I think there’s more chance of us being top 8 than bottom 3 but who knows, “it’s a funny old game”. I’m just enjoying the season, I love the Toon 😀

      (Quote)

  27. richie it also very much depends on what form the opposition are in when you play them. The monkeys have been really lucky and played teams when they were on poor form. thats what got them their false position. Their luck is changing a bit now though but they always seem to have a bad run every season. 😀

      (Quote)

  28. Well said, Richie. I’ll be disappointed if we finish 17th but not too much – it’s what we aimed for after all. But it does look more likely that we’ll go up from here than down. The only problem is that the gaps between places are wider going up, but with 11 games to go anything could happen.

Personally, once we’ve survived, the priority should be finishing higher than the mackems, and after that a European place. And yes, that probably means hoping (ick) manure win the CL.

      (Quote)

  29. DJG….I said that earlier in the season when people were saying the mackems were doing well, I said they were scraping points in injury time and getting quite a few pens…..not that it matters as they all count anyway but how many points have we picked up that we didn’t deserve?..not many, possibly Wigan at home and that’s it I think. I’d bet that most other teams have picked up points they shouldn’t have tho, by full time V Everton we’ll be above 5under1and by at least 2 points…mark my words 😉 😆

  30. Blackpool have run out of steam a bit like, wern’t they in the top half for most of the season? If we can get to 40 as quick as we got from 30 to 35 we have nothing to worry about. Really it would take a disaster of rediculous proportions for us to get pulling into the relegation scrap, even the teams on 30+ are probably gonna be ok.

      (Quote)

  31. With two winnable homes games coming up I would expect us to be above the Mackems in a couple of weeks time. But we don’t have a good record in our winnable home games this season.

Well that was under Houghton – Is it different under Pardew our great new leader?

      (Quote)

  32. batty i just have this horrible feeilng we will finish in 8th behind the last euro team by goal difference or something thats why i dont wanna talk about it. 🙂

      (Quote)

  33. Stu it depends on the fans aswell. I think the team played so well in the last two games because of the immense away supporters.

  34. Great result last night, away from home. Nice to see Bentley, Larrson and Martins on the losing side.

Harper has been playing a blinder since he came back, think that push by Krul made him up his game even more.

      (Quote)

  35. Last night was a great result for us, Jonas played a stormer and he seemed instrumental in our domination of Birmingham. Full credit to Lovenkrands and Best to scoring both goals they took them really well.

Pardew got his tactics spot on, he choose someone to man mark Zigic which prevented him from gaining many balls. Martins was ineffective and we seem to have improved both our attacking and defensive sides of our game. I think that because we have another week off that will really help us as other teams around us will be tired. Two winable home games, Everton are slipping at the moment so its time to take advantage of their form

      (Quote)

  36. Of course we should be thinking about europe, if mackems can bang on about it then so can we, if it happens then fantastic but just as happy to finish 10 – 12th
Pards is doing a decent job on the pitch and looks like we are going out to attack and win every game rather than sticking 5 across midfield and hoping for a long ball to Carroll

Bolton will be a tough game but defo winnable

      (Quote)

  37. These are matches we usually draw, or lose (crappy pitch, negative side, etc)- fair play to Pardew and the lads for getting the job done. Learning to win these types of games are what separates good teams form average ones.

As for Arsenal v. Barca- I’m excited to watch it but I personally see Barca blowing them off the pitch. Arsenal only know how to play Barca’s game, which is suicide…

  38. Sounds to me as if Chelsea have been put off our price tag for Tiote.Fellaini’s father claims Chelsea are in for him. It makes sense as Everton need the money more than we do.

  39. 4411,

If you listen to Southampton fans a lot of them would say that while Pardew was in charge he played all out attacking, attractive football. Didnt always come off but fans do appreciate a style.

I believe our defense with Harps behind them allow the attacking player to give it ago. Just need to get a few players in this summer up front then who knows…

  40. just thought, what happenes if an Premiership team wins the Champions league or maybe Man City win the Europa cup, will the qualifying positions go down?

I hope Arsenal get absolutely MURDERED tonight. I’m hoping 6-0, because they are my new most dislike club in England.
Perhaps just ahead of Scum, Liverpool and Man United.

I have never heard such a bunch of sulky whinging twats in my life, and I’ve lost all respect for that club and its manager.

Bunch of babies… Hope Barca smash up, and you’ll find out tonight garaunteed – Arsenal cannot beat Barca at their own game. Its true.

  42. What amazes me is for a side that was a championship team last year, who would have thought we’d have a midfield of:

Nolan, Ben Arfa, Tiote, Barton, Jonas, Gosling, Ireland and potentially Gervinho.

I mean, that is just world class. Certainly the best outside the top five clubs in the league.

      (Quote)

  43. It will be interesting to see how we play without the pressure in the next few games, thought we lost our way a bit in the first half but kicked on in the second and im sure if the surface had been better we would have scored more.
The back 4 are creating a platform for pacy football on the break and its a joy to watch, when they raided down the left, Fatty Carr was all over the place and it was wonderful to see Jonas cut inside and run at the centre halves.
I am warming to Pardew and i liked when he said that the win made the recent draws look good results, they were, but a negative spin had been put around them, hopefully he will keep us going and we have nothing to fear in this league despite what the experts forecast for us at the outset.

      (Quote)

  44. @ILM:The team placed fifth in the Premier League automatically qualifies for the UEFA Europa League, and the sixth and seventh-placed teams can also qualify, depending on the winners of the two domestic cup competitions. If one of the cup winners qualifies for Europe through their league position, the sixth-placed team in the Premier League will qualify for the Europa League.

If both of the cup winners qualify for the Champions League through their league position, the sixth and seventh-placed teams in the Premier League will qualify for the Europa League. If either domestic cup competition is contested between teams outside the top four league positions, the winner will automatically qualify for the UEFA Europa League regardless of their final league position.

A further place in the UEFA Europa League is also available via the Fair Play initiative. If the Premier League has one of the three highest Fair Play rankings in Europe, the highest ranked team in the Premier League Fair Play standings which has not already qualified for Europe will automatically qualify for the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round.
