Jose clarifies his comments.

Jose to discuss new contract if we survive?
Jose Enrique has today responded to the ‘quotes’ that have made their way to back pages regarding the player’s future, and it seems the situation has been taken out of context and the defender has had words put in his mouth.

Newcastle fans have been disappointed and upset at recent suggestions that the Spanish ace is ready to quit the club in the summer with the likes of Liverpool, AC Milan and Manchester United said to be keeping tabs. It has been suggested the player is unsettled on Tyneside and his alleged comments came across as negative and as if the chances of him signing a new deal were bleak to say the very least.

Speaking to the official website this afternoon, Jose set the record straight and reassured the fans that his words have been taken completely out of context. Here’s what Enrique had to say;

“I had a good chat with a Spanish journalist about how things were going this season. I told him we’re having a good season and how I’ve been enjoying the games, playing well and focussing on the good year I am having at the club.”

“We are ambitious and, like all the players here, we want to play at the highest level we can. Newcastle is a great club with some excellent players and I hope we can kick on and continue to progress.”

“From this interview, two or three lines have now appeared in the English papers, and because they are totally out of context with the rest of the interview, I am very disappointed at being portrayed in this manner.”

“The position with my contract has always been clear and both myself and the manager have talked about it openly.”

“I would like to ensure that we have secured Premier League status for next season before we discuss a new deal. It is natural for me, as it is for every player, to want to play at the top level.”

We all know that Jose wanted to ensure that the club retained top flight status before opening new contract talks as he was always very honest and open about that, and of course manager Alan Pardew has also confirmed this to be the case. So if this is true then all in honesty things haven’t changed, we aren’t mathematically safe just yet.

It’s fair enough that Jose wants to see where we are at the end of the season, and it’s not a bad thing that we have players with big ambitions and in terms of solid, reliable and consistent players in the squad Jose Enrique tops the list. It’s nice to know he hasn’t already decided he wants out and I just hope we can convince the left back that his future is at St James’ Park.

The squad are a tight knit group and hopefully if one or two commit then more will follow. If Joey Barton signs an extension it may encourage the likes of Jose to do the same. We all know that to be an ambitious club you must keep your best players as well spend money to bring in new faces.

Summer will not be an enjoyable or comfortable time knowing Newcastle United, however Jose clarifying his words has made me feel a lot better. If we went down or Jose had the chance to join a Champions League club I’d let him go if that’s what he wanted, however it would be a slightly different story if we finished strongly and he joined a team in and around us. I would be less understanding.

Well done Jose, for communicating with the fans who love you around here, the gutter press in this country are happy to put twists on stories and especially love discrediting Newcastle at any available opportunity..

  1. Well done Jose. As I said in a previous comment, finish the season strong and invest a good % of that 35M in the summer and Jose will stick around.

  2. MDS- sounds good to me mate.
as i say southern press had chance to exaggerate the situation and sounds like they’ve got it a tad wrong. maybe jose read the blogs and thought whoops i better inform my people.

  3. Mark, plus those rags are at their worst when there is a translation involved. Either their own translators are crap or they use it as an excuse sensationalize. I’ll bet the latter…

Jose is approaching world class status. Who can blame him he wants to play in the Champions League? He is still a young lad though and he looks to want to give it a go with us. If we still aren’t at that level in 2-3 years I don’t blame him for wanting to move on and then we should sell. And we will profit nicely from it and try and find the next Jose.

  4. agreed, couldn’t blame him, he’s been brill.
but this is the best squad we’ve had in so long and id love to see what could happen
as i say as long as its not a sidewards step he takes, I’d try and be happy for him

  6. If Barton signs a new contract next week as the journal are reporting, we get safe as soon as possible and finish in the top half maybe even sneak Europe then we have a good chance of him signing a new contract, if he doesn’t straight away then hopefully we will sign one or two players early on in the window.

  7. Grrrrrr already commented on this on last post, the players have ambition and the club needs to match it through investment in the squad. That doesn’t mean signing ronaldo but more players like tiote, Enrique, Ben arfa etc – we should def be aiming for champions league in a couple of seasons, there is not that much difference between our best 11 and spurs / Chelsea / Liverpool (do they still count) beyond the first 11 we are struggling tho so need to beef up quality players.
We can’t rely on youth and players stepping up if we expect the highest level football our best players rightly want

  8. Well said 4411. Good players have ambition. If you want good players in your club, the club must show ambition or the players will leave you for somebody who does.

  9. “In his latest self aggrandising interview, Newcastle United manager, Alan Pardew, has been criticising the previous regime’s analysis of training and match days.” – Worky still trying to drum up anti Pardew support I see.

Has anyone noticed how many left wingers we are being linked with???
Surely if we are going to sign a winger, they’ll play on the right side considering we have Ben Arfa and Jonas on the left already with Lovenkrans, Ferguson, and Moyo as cover?

Unfortunately, as much as I dislike it, there is still a gap between our starting 11 and the Spuds.
But with a bit of investment, you may be right. Look at this:

Position for position, I’d say this is how we compare:

(GK) Harper vs Gomes – Harper just sneeks it on consistancy
(RB) Simpson vs Hutton- Hutton takes it
(CB) Williamson vs Dawson – Dawson takes it
(CB) Colo vs Gallas – lets call it even
(DL) Enrique vs Ekoto – Enrique takes it

    (ok so denfense is even)

(ML) Jonas vs Bale – Bale hands down
(MC) Tiote vs Palacio – Tiote takes it
(MC) Nolan vs Modric – Modric takes it
(MR) Barton vs Lennon – well completely different players but as a right wing Lennon takes it

(AM) Ben Arfa vs Van der Vaart – considering we havn’t really seen Ben Arfa, Van der Fart takes it

(ST) Best vs Defoe – Defoe takes it

What it does say is IF we invest in a quality striker, a quality right winger (Gervinho) allowing Joey to play in the middle, another quality right back (Miguel), then say two top youngsters…

Then we would be close to matching Tottenham.

  23. It’s started again hasn’t it? We get some success and the tabloids start spreading rumours and beating up non-stories.

The sad part is that we haven’t learnt. We’ve started believing the tabloids again. At this rate we’ll produce self-fulilling prophecies by driving out players because we don’t like their attitude, an attitude created by the tabloids.

    Wake up!

Defoe better than Best – personally think defoes shite, best has scored more goals than Defoe this year and defno is apparently playing for champs league team !
