Who’s been YOUR player of the season so far?

Colo has been Fab this season
It’s certainly been a season filled with ups and downs and with 11 games still to be played there’s most probably more twists and turns in store before the season draws to an end.

I appreciate that asking people to name their player of the season may be slightly premature, but I thought I’d talk about some of the candidates who, in my opinion, deserve to be considered, even at this early stage.

Firstly I think it’s fair to say most the lads can be safe in the knowledge that they have had a solid season, proving a lot of critics wrong and making the fans proud. Here are a few who have stood out.

Joey Barton – Joey started the season well. I mean who can forget that thunderbolt he hit against Aston Villa in our first game of the season at St James’ Park? It’s been a season where the Scouser has played some of the best football of his career and has been a revelation playing in a slightly unfamiliar position on the right wing.

With the exception of a couple of moments of madness, Joey has been well disciplined this season and has walked away when he has clearly been targeted at times. The midfielder has a great bond with the fans and a is a great leader as well as obviously being well respected in the dressing room.

Cheik Tiote – Cheap as chips signing Tiote arrived in the summer from FC Twente for a mere £3.5 million, and since then he hasn’t really put a foot wrong. Powerful and good on the ball, Cheik has put in a string of excellent performances in the black and white shirt. Tiote also proved against Arsenal that he’s got quite a shot on him as it was his beautiful left footed volley that earned us that well deserved point that afternoon. I cant praise Cheik Tiote enough. He is a complete midfielder who’s eye catching displays has linked the player with the likes of Chelsea.

Kevin Nolan – The Newcastle United captain has certainly had his critics, with many implying that he was no longer Premier League standard and that the former Bolton player found his level in The Championship. Of course Kevin starred for Newcastle in the promotion season, finding himself on the score sheet on a regular basis.

Many people’s concerns with Nolan is how he has a tendency to disappear during games, but what he does do is crop up in the right places at the right time. Kevin has so far scored 10 goals from midfield this season, which is the biggest goal return the Liverpudlian has seen in the top flight. There’s still 11 games to expand on that as well! Like Joey, Nolan leads by example and is an excellent leader on the pitch and in the dressing room.

Jose Enrique – So much speculation has surrounded Jose’s future this past week or so. One thing I will say is that it’s hardly surprising the defender is being linked with the big clubs. A very talented and classy left back, there aren’t many better around than Jose Enrique.

The best player in The Championship last season in my opinion with a series of solid performances, great at defending and brilliant going forward. Jose has managed to retain that form and bring it with him to the Premier League. When Jonas is on song it’s a joy watching the two combine down the left hand side. It’s essential the club do everything it can to keep Enrique on the payroll at St James’.

Fabricio Coloccini – The Argentinian had a damaged reputation after a nightmare start to his Newcastle career. He struggled with the English game and the demands of top flight football and his first season at the club ended with relegation. Despite offers from abroad, Colo stayed on Tyneside and started to show the Newcastle faithful what he was capable of and, despite playing in the second tier, he started showing his class.

This season, Fabricio has continued to justify his massive transfer fee with excellent and composed display’s at the heart of the Newcastle defence. He’s played along side Mike Williamson and Steven Taylor and has looked comfortable with both.

They are probably the most obvious candidates, but no one can deny the class that each of these men have shown on the pitch over the last 27-odd games. We’ll of course be running a proper NUFCblog.co.uk poll for Player of the Season in May, but in the meantime….
