Can Tiote be our future captain?

Tiote shows who is the boss!
Cheik Tiote has established himself as one of Newcastle’s key men this season.

The Ivory Coast international has recently signed a new contract on Tyneside and has stated how happy he is at the club. He has even rebuffed interest from Chelsea and Real Madrid as well apparently, although I have some doubts on that as the story comes from the Sunday Sun.

Yesterday I made a rather rare trip back home and took in the match at St James’ Park. Generally I attend away games, but whilst I was up there I thought I may as well take in the match, especially as it was Mrs. Toonsy’s idea. How could I possibly refuse? I mean it was her birthday after all….

Anyway, I could have a moan about the ref, I can moan about some basic errors, some poor finishing or some poor defending if I choose to, but I’m not going to do that. Instead I am going to focus on Cheik Tiote.

Yesterday wasn’t the first time that I have seen him action, but I did notice that there was something extra about him against Bolton. Tiote seemed to carry a bit of extra authority and seemed to get involved in in the attack more often than I have seen in the past.

He took set pieces and even grabbed himself an assist when he chased down another one of Ryan Taylor’s **** crosses (those who say that Taylor is a good set-piece taker really, REALLY need to get their eyes checked) and showed him how it should be done by planting the ball straight on Kevin Nolan’s head for the opening goal of the game.

Tiote was everywhere, again, yesterday. He misplaced a couple of passes and was partly at fault for the Bolton goal, but overall he was excellent again. I would suggest that Tiote is more important to our team right now than any other individual is at the moment.

The way he conducted himself and the way he carried the team at times did make me think though. As I sat there watching him I thought that he would make a fantastic captain for our club. Think about it. The lad shows commitment, passion, drive, leads by example, says he loves the club etc etc. Isn’t that what you want from a captain?

I’m not saying that Kevin Nolan should be deposed as captain immediately, as to honest he is the main man and does a fantastic job at geeing the team up, but perhaps there is a space for vice-captain in the absence of Kevin Nolan in the offing?

Do you think Tiote would have it in him? Is he big enough to carry the responsibility? Would his penchant for a yellow card be a problem?

What do you think?

  2. Dave @ 70 – Stop licking **** 😆

Nah seriously I agree mate. It’s being given a rest at the minute as all the changes (domain, server etc) need to settle down a little bit before it pushes on properly.

  3. MM, I lived in spain 4 years so you were right mate 😉

Big Dave, I keep an eye on it for banter purposes with the lads I play football with, they all support someone different so alway good for a laugh, standard of football is awful though!

Been to a few Dundee games in Division 1, they have won 15 of their last 17 but were deducted 25 points earlier on so they are scond or third bottom!

  4. I am absolutely devastated Birmingham have won the cup. There goes our hopes for Europe, and following them out the door is Jose Enrique, the best left back in the country. 😥

  5. El Toro, dont be devestated mate, we arent guarenteed to finish 7th!
    Plus, Arsenal deserve nowt.

    toonsy, whats your PSN ID?

  6. EL-TORO if they dont want to play for toon theres not much we can do,look at benny he could have played in the CL,but came here, swings and roundabouts mate,nee-body wants to lose our best plays but—–

  7. Moreno take it easy on him 😆
Ryan he is old but not old enough to be Richies granda
Ice im surprised golden balls hasn’t been on unless he has done a moonlight, but then again it is normally about 9 before he is on ?

  8. El Toro…MA will offer the players what he considers to be a good deal, then it’s up to the player to take it or leave it. If they all think they can play for Citeh or Man Utd then we aint gonna hold onto them anyway. Jose is a great player, and I would love him to stay, but I wouldn’t say that he is to leave for sure just cos we don’t qualify for europe. Lighten up mate, our aim this season is to survivie in the big lague, then kick on. Now the glory hunters will be disappointed if we don’t achieve WAY beyond expectations and qualify for europe…howay man, get real. Consider the turmoil we’ve been through this season, and how we are currently performing, an immense achievement so far imo…

  9. El Toro…just watch out for next season, we’ll have a new look midfield and a strengthened forward line playing samba football, then europe will be really within our reach !

  10. Ice aye I heard he is doing removals but I also heard the people he do’s it for know fuk all about it, untill they get back to an empty house 😀

  11. I think if Enrique wants to go because we haven’t hit Europe this season then he needs to wake up, get fecking real, and remember that this time last season we were playing Watford away.

I know us fans can get labelled deluded, but it would also apply to Enrique if that was the case….

  12. Toonsy I think all this Jose ***** is being blew out of the water by the Fans, all we do know is that he wants to wait to makesure we are in the prem next season before entering contract talks which I dont blame him for that. the rest is all bullshit 😀

  13. Hope you lot are right, but it’s just so typical of our luck that in a season where almost any team could finish 7th it becomes completely pointless. I will be surprised if the motivation of our players hasn’t taken a hit after todays events

  14. Still not convinced like, think the Tiote thing is another load of old bull, or the club agreeing to pay him more in the short term and put a sell on clause in his contract something like that.

Finishing above pennywell would do nicely IMHO. Not holding me breath aboot Europa League, although we ballsed up royally yesterday and could have made a real statement of intent.

One second they want to see if we will survive, next second they want to wait until the summer. Smells fishy to me…

  16. jose was poor in his first season to be fair, picked up a lot in ccc,has really showed his class this year imo, think he should remember that a little, last year club and fans were best thing since sliced bread loved it blah blah, like a lot of players wind and water, when more cash comes calling, like zog he went to bigger club didnt he

  17. Dave – I agree that it’s being blown out of proportion as I read the original, as did Moreno, as did Jersey Geordie. We all speak Spanish.

Even Richie says the same, and as his wife is actually Spanish I’d tend to believe what he says over Google translate anyday.

      (Quote)

  18. Wit jose wanting to wait til we get enough points before we r safe before talking about a new contract does tat not show how much he cares for the club? The way i look at it is he is concentrating at the job at hand not his bank balance. He is been professional and doing wat he is paid by the club to do. I think he will stay

  19. true toonsy, the reports in this country were so inaccurate, contradictory and out of context, I would be suing them. It’s not just knowing words, it’s understanding the language and context in which they are used.

Our media are getting worse, it’s going to get to the point when people will go to spain or italy to ply their trade as they cant be arsed with our media and the complete sh*te they spout.

      (Quote)

  20. Either Jose has had his head turned and is outahere anyway, or is playing the contractual game to get as big a wedge as possible out of the club. We all know that MA likes to play hard ball too so it’s gonna be a busy summer for the toon I think, with some comings and goings..

Personally I’ll be happy once the 42+ points are in the bag…..

      (Quote)

  21. johno, there is absolutely no evidence to suggest he won’t mate,
all of our players will be linked with someone at some point during the next window if we continue to impress

      (Quote)

  22. The Enrique Barcelona link smells like the sunday morning bullshit Zog Arsenal link that kept popping up in the rags with no substance what so ever…

      (Quote)

  23. batty@120…agree 100% mate. They both owe the club imo…but loyalty doesn’t come into it when we’re talking big bucks.

      (Quote)

  24. The thing is though, as a few have have mentioned; it took Enrique quite a while to settle, when he’s focused he was outstanding with a good run of games. In my opinion (not fact) he has had his head turned from somewhere recently and has had a couple of dodgy games, especially his defending. Im not sure he has the mentality for Spain in world cup or AC. Milan, that sort of thing. He still has quite a lot of time in his career and if NUFC do continue to get better for next season. Speaking with his personal interests in mind, I think he may be jumping the gun a little to go to a mega big club already.

      (Quote)

  25. batty@128 dead right mate, they both owe the fans….especially Barton, who’s only had one half good season in how many years at the toon ?.

      (Quote)

  26. It just seems that no matter what the players say or do they can never win because there is always someone going to say they should be concentrating on playing rather than contracts, then when you have one (Tiote) that do’s sign then thats only because we will get more for him and it will get him more money while he is waiting on his move. 😕

      (Quote)

  27. Batty can you remember DJG coming on here feeling sorry for himself that no one asked after him 😥 and then when we do ask about him and show that we do care, he dosn’t even bother to answer you and let us know that he’s ok 😈

      (Quote)

  28. Aye Big Dave but how dare they give us any reason to think they aren’t 100% commited, I reckon we should sell them both immediately!

    😛

  29. I was overjoyed when Martins scoreded that tap-in off a silly mistake. Sooo pleased the whinging **** didn’t win it in the end after we bottled it. 🙂

He can spew what ever but the players like us are rightly sceptical over the transfer plans for the summer and will sign up when the club show some ambition, Ashleys season ticket offer has made that look even more he aint spending the carroll cash…

I don’t see how people can be happy Birmingham beat Arsenal!?

Do you not think that the 7th place Europa spot would have been a slight bit of extra incentive for our players?

Do you like seeing players who let us down so badly go on to vindicate their decision to leave us by winning trophies elsewhere?

I’m sorry, but I just can’t see the positives. Not to mention Birmingham are an utterly pathetic club that play terrible football. I hope they get relegated and don’t get their Europa spot to be honest.

  33. El T

I like to see Whinge face get beat. He showed little respect to birmingham in the FINAL after seemingly throwing out his big guns against us in the early stages.

I do think Birmingham are in trouble and I think it’s refreshing to see a team have something to be happy about in their season if they are poor in the league games.

No I didn’t want Arsenal to win after they represtented probably the final serious stumbling block for us after we beat Chelsea and Hooten ‘the greatest NUFC manager of all time’ 🙄 bottled it.

Finally im not bothered at all about Europa league, we don’t (and very very probably won’t have) the depth to play in Europe next year, and if we do it will probably cause us huge injury and fatigue problems.

      (Quote)

  34. There are a few decent players in the SPL that we could be looking at to fill our squad.

None if you want a signing to make a major statement but certainly some to give decent quality to the 25 man team and a few decent youngsters.

      (Quote)

  35. Batty yer friends list FFS im the only one on it 😆 oh and by the way fuk face I have never burgled a turd but I know someone that has 😆
Moreno yer right mate and there is a few more we need to get shot off for only showing 99% comitment 😉

      (Quote)

  36. I know Arsenal fans who I am speaking to about it now and thats the reason i wanted Brum to win.
I got a major bite for writing ”another trophyless season…” just to start things off and he is on about how its a shote cup and they are going to win the league, also, if they knock barca out they will be favourites for CL.

I told him I didnt really care as we got 4 points off them this season and explained,,

“too inexperienced this Arsenal side, Wilshire needs to stop being so petulant, Walcott needs to turn up for the big games and Fabregas isnt the sort of captain to give his players a positive kick up the **** to turn a game round, he leads by his performance rather than personality. Arshavin has been hit or miss, has played well lately but so he should for that money.

The Arsenal that won the league (no doubt when you started following them?) were full of hugely exerienced guys and this team is a mere shadow of that”

…as he is convinced they will beat man utd and win the title. He hasnt replied for a while.
