What does the future hold for Newcastle United?

Doc.. tell me about the future
I’m often criticised by the people I know for how much I bang on about Newcastle United. It’s true, the club are my life and my mood is affected by results. We win and I’m delighted, but when we lose those close to me know to give me a bit of space.

This season I have been a happy man. The football has generally been good and the results, though a mixed bag, have been pleasing on the whole. There have been negatives but I have been able to remain optimistic throughout.

I look at the current squad and I really believe that we have a lot of ability in the dressing room as well as experience and some good characters. It’s been a long time since I have been able to say that I’m excited about the team and the future of this club.

If we are able to keep the current crop of players together and add a few more in the summer then I think we could push forward and progress as a football club. We lack depth in the squad currently, but a few decent additions in the summer would put that right.

Of course that is a very optimistic view but I think it’s a realistic one. If Newcastle can be shrewd in the summer the club’s potential could be realised. But let’s be honest that’s a big IF. It all comes down to the ambition of the owner and what he plans to do at the end of the season.

Will he pump that massive Β£35 million back into the club? Will he convince players such as Jose Enrqiue that he can fulfil his ambitions at Newcastle? Will he fight off any big offers for our better players if and when they come?

It worries me how much Alan Pardew has admitted that no player is ‘unsellable’. I agree that every player has his price, even Manchester United were forced to sell their best player when the right bid came in, and although I understand and agree with the statement it still makes me a bit anxious.

We may never know the truth about the Andy Carroll saga. Newcastle got good money for the player, but it’s the principle of the matter. The fans were assured by the board and the manager that Carroll wouldn’t be sold in that window. My personal opinion is that Andy had his head turned and wanted out, there have been various stories but could Ashley have done more to keep Andy?

I’m not raising the Carroll debate again, he’s gone and life goes on but I would just like to have seen what efforts were made to keep the star player. Let’s say someone came in for Tiote in the summer for Β£15 million odd, would the club reject such an offer? Sure he’s just signed a new deal but so had Judas……

The point of this write up is if I felt confident of keeping some of our better players then I would be very positive about the future. I think we have something solid to build on, and if Ashley can re-invest that cash and prove his ambition to the players and the fans then he could be owner of a football club on the up in my opinion.

Ensuring the futures of Joey and Jose would be a good start. I think if we can clock up two more wins this season then we can begin preparations for another season in the Premier League. The second we reach 40-odd points I would be chasing Jose Enrique with a 5 year contract in one hand and a pen in the other.

Where will we be in the summer?

  1. i think we need to use this money wisley.only expect about 20 million to be used, we need to try to get more people like tiote through the door, get our scout carr on the look out for players. if we can sort out joeys and joses contracts to we could become a very decent side in the premier league. like i said the unsung hero at newcastle is carr, bringing in such players like tiote, williamson, bassong etc. i think it would be wise for pardew to pay close attention to him, he is a brilliant scout.

  2. I fully understand where you’re coming from but ultimately we need players who believe in Pardews/Ashleys longer term plan – we can’t compete with top four or clubs such as Liverpool who are prepared to spend beyond their means to pretend they are still a top 4 team
Slow growth is something we need to get used to – we’ve prob overachieved thus far ( presuming we are talking of europe already) but most people on this blog are realistic enough to know anything beyond 16thlace is a bonus this year
We’ve already had massive highs and bizarre lows but overall this seasons football is the best I’ve seen in the last 6 years

  3. Good article Mark. JosΓ© and Barton are the priorities then we can build but it’s probably going to have to be the other way around.

  4. Good write up Mark and I pretty much agree with much of what you said.

The only thing that concerns me is that there are a lot of ‘if’s’ in there as that is when our owner has come up short in the past. If suggests a choice, and usually it’s the wrong one kind of thing πŸ™‚

  6. I reckon if we were to accept 15 million for Tiote then the team would be getting a bargain. Essien was 18 mil with no proven Premier League experience and Cheik is better (not being biased either)
The only way I could see it happen is an astronomical bid and Cheik wanting to leave. Can’t see him wanting to in the summer fortunately!

  8. I like his attitude, he wants to play, feels he has a point to prove, driven, seems like he hates mediocrity. I think if he can get any sort of form together we’ll sign him, seems like the sort of player Pardew/the club want.

  20. ILM – That Sun article if true, makes a mockery of the argument that Ashley wanted to keep all these players to give us a good chance of getting back up.

The fact was that all the players who were instrumental in getting us back up were up for sale and would have been sold for a fraction of what we paid.

      (Quote)

  21. Even if it’s true, so what?
Every club that goes down will do exactly the same thing.Hard times = cutbacks, harsh reality of life and you’d have to be extremely naive to think everyone wasn’t for sale when we went down.

But the regime were going round telling anyone who would listen that Ashley had decided to pay money to actually keep these players to help us get back up, when in reality he wanted to sell them all.

That was my point. I agree we had to make cuts, no doubt about that.
