Why cant Newcastle get the job done at St James’?

Saturday afternoon resulted in another disappointing result at home. Newcastle have an unwanted jinx that they cant shake off, the jinx seemingly being 3.00pm on a Saturday afternoon-location being St James’ Park.

Who can forget the first home game of the season? Newcastle thrashing Aston Villa 6-0, a result that no one really expected and to be honest probably a performance that most didn’t think Newcastle United were capable of producing at this level.

Seemingly if we are going to win at home we like to do it in style. Of course as mentioned above we put 6 past Villa, then went on to beat the dirty, unwashed gimps 5-1 and hammered West Ham 5-0 also. Bar those we have struggled at home on the whole and luckily our decent away form has made up for it.

In Saturday’s poor show against Everton we were without the influential Joey Barton, like we were the week before against Bolton- another game we were unable to win. Joey’s injury has certainly been a blow and we look a lesser team without him. Stephen Ireland was also denied his St James’ Park bow due to a niggling injury sustained in training.

We all know how thin the squad is and how one injury leaves us looking short of options, Joey’ injury forced Danny Simpson to play in a unfamiliar right wing role which didn’t seem suit the player. However there can’t be any excuses for the poor home form. They say that home grounds should be a fortress, but St James’ is far from that right now. This season a string of below par performances has seen the team lose valuable points at a place which is supposed ti give us the majority of our points.

Let’s go back further than recent home form and look back to earlier in the season. We ended up losing at home to Stoke, Blackpool and Blackburn and had it not been for an injury time equaliser from Colo, we could have added Wigan to the list too. The league is a tight one and in reality anyone can beat anyone, but surely they are the type of games we should be talking something from?

The Bolton and Everton games are certainly missed opportunities to climb the table, which is all the more frustrating when you consider that we took the lead in both games. So why are we incapable of holding onto a lead at home? In my opinion we need two more wins to ensure safety and you would think home games would be where the advantage lies. But Newcastle don’t do things the easy way and seem to flap at St James’. With an away trip to Stoke coming up let’s hope the lads can put a few wrongs right and get something from a very tough away fixture.

The game is at Saturday at 3.00PM, but fear not the jinx only appears during home matches apparently. I went to Stoke last time we played them, it was none other than greasy ball bag and turd watcher Andy Carroll that saved a point for us that day. Hopefully our boy Leon Best can continue his wonderful goalscoring form.

What are your opinions? What team would you play against Stoke? And when will we win at home again?

  1. Good to see your loathing for Carroll is undimmed MarkToon…was a real shame the b@stard didn’t get injured on his debut πŸ˜€

  2. I think much of it depends on who we get beck fit. I’m hoping that we get Berton and Ireland back at least, and I’m also hoping that Jose’s injury isn’t too bad.

Two weeks to stew on a bad result and hopefully get some players back on the pitch. God knows what’s causing the injuries though πŸ˜•

  3. SRH – Pass. It’s all pretty quiet on that score.

Benny and Gosling will be a while yet. Barton and Ireland were 50/50 for Everton so they’ll probably be fit. As for Jose? Pass….

  4. Actually that was Pardew’s decision, but I get the gist of it.

I think there’s another 19 clubs asking similar questions about themselves. It’s been a season like no other that I can remember. Every team has had runs that has taken them to the brink of escaping relegation or getting into a Euro spot or topping the table or opening a gap on their rivals, and then they blow it and end up back where they were.

The result is that the table doesn’t seem to have changed that much since Xmas, and there’s still not many points between last and 8th.

Who knows why that’s happening! There’s not that much difference between squad quality anymore? Tactics are more refined? The standard of football has evened out? No idea.

As for Newcastle, well, they’re just doing what Newcastle do. In the 40-odd years since my first game they’ve almost always been frustrating and inconsistent. In that sense it’s nothing new.

  5. Hmm, that was meant to start with a quote from the blog about Joey’s injury orcing Simpson to play wide right.

Obviously you can’t cut and paste into the comments section.

  6. Well I’ve managed to get to see the Blackpool, Wigan & Everton games this season & I’m starting to think I’m a jinx….I’ll not be returning until we’re safe!

  7. I just hope Lovenkrands is dropped after his shambles. Why is it the guy gets started every game when he contributes nowt?

  8. Me and Mark were talking about this yesterday. The problem with Lovenkrands is that he never has an “average” performance. He is either good and scoring a goal, like he did against Birmingham, or he is anonymous and contributes nothing. He can’t have a steady away game where he does a bit but isn’t the Best.

  9. Toonsy….. always remembered for the result or for your special friend πŸ˜‰

So if Man Utd refuse to do tv interviews, then don’t put them on TV and don’t give them tv money, I’m sure the Glazers would then soon get Fergie to tow the line. πŸ˜€

  10. Rich – Bit of both, combined with the near-death experience I had to endure because of him πŸ˜†

  11. On Fergie, I thought it was against the rules not to talk to the media? Hit em with a points deduction πŸ˜‰

I note that they seem to be moaning about Carragher’s challenge? Fair enough, but don’t forget Rooney’s elbow from last week either. Hypocrites.

  12. People mention Lovenkrands goal against Brum in his defence. Fair enough.
When was the last time (excluding that) he played well and how many games/starts has he had this season?

  13. Exactly, they are required ot give interviews as part of the tv deal…..no interviews = no money.
They also whinged about Luiz’s challenge v Chelsea. πŸ™„

  14. Couldn’t say for definite, but I know he has appeared 16 times, and I know that not all of them were starts.

  15. I don’t think Lovenkrands has looked as though he wants to be here for quite a while now. If that’s because he didn’t think he was getting the games he thought he deserved, then he has to seize the chance to prove it when he can, which he hasn’t done at all imo.

  16. Problem with forwards is that they will always look poor if they dont get the service, we have a good first eleven and its no coincidence that our poorer displays are when Barton isnt playing.

  17. “Newcastle have an unwanted jinx that they cant shake off, the jinx seemingly being 3.00pm on a Saturday afternoon-location being St James’ Park.”

Sometimes I think the jinx goes deeper than that.

  18. Gutierrez will be a miss as well. I know people moan about his lack of end product, but his contribution goes further than that IMO. He is constantly working for the team, drawing fouls, getting throw ins, relieving the pressure etc.

I think he will be a miss if he is out for a period.

  19. I see, Toonsy. If I put the marks around the quote, it doesn’t work.

I suppose the marks interfere with code in som way, eh? Computers, never did get the hang of their backsides.

Should do, as per this post. Got me confuddled anyway πŸ˜€

  21. has anyone looked at the stats for away wins this season compared to others?

To me, it looks like ‘the season of the away team’, loads of teams seem to be pulling out results away from home.

Or is it just me? πŸ˜€

  22. “Or is it just me?”…. I don’t know, how many times have you got a “result” playing away from home? πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜†

  23. Spot on Toonsy at 25. Arteta would not have had such a good game had Jonas been on the right. He has a terrific work rate and on Saturday got no protection from Webb at all.
