Indian takeover at the Toon?

Ambami interested in Newcastle?

Ambami interested in Newcastle? Newcastle United are being eyed up for a summer takeover, again, if rumours in the Sunday Mirror are to be believed.

In one of those famous “exclusives” that regularly feature in the Sunday papers, The Mirror claims that preparatory work on a deal ‘in excess of £200 million’ is already under way and that the interested patry has already visited Newcastle. That interested party goes by the name of Anil Ambami.

If the name rings a bell there will be good reason for that as Ambami was said to be interested in buying NUFC when Ashley flobbed the dummy and wanted out back in 2008. Nothing came of it at the time, which is understandable given the state that the club was in financially and with all the turmoil surrounding St James’ Park in what was an extraordinary season for all the wrong reasons.

Ambami is currently the Chairman of the Reliance Group and has a current net worth of US$8.8 billion, which roughly works out at around £5.5 billion. Not a bad wedge then, and it makes him nearly four times richer than current owner Mike Ashley. And if Anil gets a bit short then he can always tap up his brother, Mukesh up for a loan. After all, his slightly older brother is worth around US$29 billion!

Personally I think it’s a load of codswallop, what with it being a Sunday and all, but it’s worth a look anyway as it does kind of touch on something that the club should be doing anyway, although admittedly having an Indian owner would make it much easier process.

With the new financial rules set to come into play you could perhaps wonder just what the benefit of having such a wealthy owner would be. If a club is only allowed to spend what it generates then what does an owners personal wealth actually matter?

If the rules work, and it’s a big if at the minute, then growing the clubs revenue is one of the best ways to generate a greater income for the club. An Indian takeover would introduce NUFC to a new market, a very big new market as well.

It’s something that I have banged on about before, but if Newcastle could become a global brand and expand it’s fan base to India and beyond, then we could make some serious cash out of it which could be spent on the team whilst remaining within the rules.

Whether or not there is any truth in this remains to be seen, but lets just say that I won’t be getting any hopes up!

  1. Doubt it’s true with it being Sunday and that fact they haven’t had anything ‘good’ to report on us for at least a good week….

But just assuming it was true I’d rather not have a Indian or any foreign owner for that matter, i mean Blackburn is a perfect example of that.

  2. To be honest I wouldn’t care where they are from. They could be from Mars as long as they did things properly from the get go.

  3. Yeah that’s true but if someone was to want buy is i would put money on something being wrong with them. For me now though it’s got to the point where I can’t be bothered for another take over on/off/on/off saga and things are going ‘well’ at the minute under Ashley but I guess everything depends on the summer as to how committed he is.

  4. I remember when we were relegated and the Toon was or sale, and there was talk about some foreign gentlemen looking us over – Asian they were said to be – my mate in India, who works fairly high up in financial circles there, emailed me to say that there was hot talk in India that Ambami was interested.

Nothing came of that obviously, but he did say in a later email (about Easter last year) that the talk hadn’t gone away. I haven’t emailed him for a while now. Maybe I should.

Most likely it’s just a Sunday morning fantasy. It’s been a while since they’ve run it. Probably run out of angles about how to stir up fans with talk of player unrest.

  7. As long as they wouldn’t be like those at Blackburn. Much as I disliked fat sam, getting rid of a decent manager and replacing him with one who hasn’t exactly got a glowing CV, who would want owners like that………er, hang on a minute 🙄 😉

How good would that be? Not only do martians land on Earth, their first action is to buy NUFC. It’s about as likely as this Indian buying us if it’s in the Mirror.

  9. I think we should get him in chicken vindaloo and brown ale during the half time break…would be brilliant…need to build more netty’s though…

“Exactly so why are you singling the lad out”

Dunno. Why single James Perch out?

“Enrique had a stinker against everton and nobodys having a dig at him”

    I know I did. I think I said thank **** he’s injured or something like that 😆

      (Quote)

  29. if Willo is injured, and Taylor not match fit, and we’re expecting an aerial bombardment from Stoke, then why not Campbell ? Or is he totally off the pace now ?

      (Quote)

  30. Nope. Not slagged him. Just said he is **** and should never ever wear the black and white shirt ever ever again unless he gets a job as a ref at a roller-disco.

This not tongue in cheek 😉

But then again Taylor has been here for three seasons and is close to making 50 appearances for us, which is a bit of a better reference period. It’s more than 11 appearances anyway 😛

      (Quote)

  31. To be fair i agree with you he used up his last chance with that red card.

Do you really think Perch should be given more time, i would rather we chased another right back and used Fergie as cover for Enrique

that craigcoozy says in jan that there were a couple of indians up here with barry moat, talking about buying the club..

Are you sure it wasn’t – Barry Moat was pissed in the Indians, talking about buying the club?

      (Quote)

  33. CC – Why shouldn’t Perch be given more time? Is 11 satarts really enough?

It’s an extreme example, but if we had been like that with Carrol then we wouldn’t have £35 million and would have flogged for £1 million last year sometime.

      (Quote)

  34. Under normal circumstances I would disregard this story, but Indian interest has been rumoured for quite a while.

It doesn’t make sense that only one Indian family own a PL club, their a country who’s economy is getting bigger every year and have some bloody wealthy people. Plus NUFC is a big pull – if only for their fan base.

Also if Reliance sponsored us for £100m that would be seen as pretty reasonable as the exposure they would recieve would be huge. UEFA would find it pretty hard to argue that point. Easy way of getting round this fair play *****.

Personally I think Indian interest is very possible, will Ashley sell? Dunno, he might want a little too much.

If that story was true how come Mcarthy and Pulis admitted being knocked back after enquiring about Carroll after our relegation.

We could have found 100 players as good if not better than Perch on frees last summer and we probably could this summer.
