Bring on the Zoltan! Or not?
The agent of Zoltan Gera has distanced the player from a summer move to St James' Park, although he didn't fully refute any claims of Newcastle United's apparent interest in the player.
I say apparent interest as it's news to me. To put it simply, in my opinion anyway, for speculation to be backed away from there must have been some form of speculation in the first place. We have been linked with Gera before, although it was in the distant past, so quite where this recent link has come from is news to me!
Gera will be a free agent in the summer so it would be foolish not to look at him as a potential recruitment in the summer. I actually think he is a decent player to be fair. A world beater he isn't, but he is certainly a reliable and dependable player for almost any Premier League squad that happens to be outside of the top seven clubs.
So would I have him at Newcastle? Yes, because he would make our squad stronger, and it is a squad game after all as Newcastle are finding out to their cost at the moment. It's all kind of irrelevant anyway though given that his agent has calmed down any whispers of a move to Tyneside. Speaking to Hungarian publication Origo.hu., Vladan Filipovic, who represents the 31-year-old had this to say when quizzed about a summer move for his client;
"I don't know what is in the background, but Gera's contract will expire this summer so Fulham can't get money for him. I can't confirm which teams are interested, but it's not a secret that the half of the Premier League want to sign Gera."
"At the moment it's not possible to sign Gera. In England it's not possible to sign a pre-contract before the end of the contract. He could only sign a pre-contract if a team would like to sign him from outside of Great Britain. This may also be a possibility for him."
Quite how the link to Newcastle was derived from that excerpt is beyond me, but that is what is being reported in the home country of the player.
Hungary used to be pretty hot at this football lark and are widely regarded as the team that changed the face of European football, if not World football. With players like Ferenc Puskas and Sandor Kocsis they were regarded as one of the best teams of the 20th Century. Perhaps Newcastle are trying to build their own 'Magical Magyar's' with Gera and Tamas Kadar? Ok, that maybe a bit of a stretch, but you get the point.
What would you think of signing Zoltan Gera? Would he be a good addition to the squad? Do you think that he isn't good enough?
Lets us know what you think.
