A new deal for Danny?

Oh Danny boy!
It appears that Newcastle are looking to offer Danny Simpson a new deal in the summer as they look to tie down the defender for the long term.

Simpson will have only two years left on his current deal when the summer rolls around and is already attracting interest from Birmingham City if reports are to be believed, so it seems sensible that club would want negotiate a new deal for a player who, for me anyway, has been one of the surprise packages of the season so far.

I know Simpson has his critics, and I’m aware that he also has his faults, but then again so do most of our players it seems, but to be fair the lad has surprised me so far this season. He has not looked out of place in the Premier League in my opinion, and that is despite the fact that I personally had doubts over the ability of the lad at the start of the season.

To me he is improving nicely, and that is what I want to see from our players. Simpson seems to enjoy life on Tyneside and doesn’t cause us any isses. We don’t hear him grizzling about anything and we don’t hear about him partying and the like. He just gets on with it and does his job.

If you were to ask me if there was any better right-backs out there then I’d have to say that there is, but replacing Simpson is not a matter of urgency and can wait quite some time in my opinion. A new deal would keep the 24-year-old tied down for what should be approaching his peak years, and that can only be a good thing. A snip at £500,000 I’m sure you’ll agree.

So if there is any truth in this then you won’t hear me moaning. It makes sense in my eyes, but Simpson is just one of a number of players that we should be looking to deal in during the summer months. We all know who I’m talking about so I won’t go into it again!

On a different note, I’d like to adress a few things that I’ve noticed going on. There seems to be bad blood going on quite a bit at the moment with regards to certain comments being made. What I’d like us all to do now is drop it and let things calm down.

I’m just as pissed off at some of the things that have been said and the way that I have been portrayed as the rest of those involved are, but at the end of the day we should rise above it, be the better men, and do what we are all here to – make this place THE place to be and help make it the number one place to chat about NUFC and have a general laugh, mainly at each other of course.

Let’s just stick to what we do best!

  1. ‘cracked one … out’ and ‘work’ in the same sentence.

    Sounds like a productive evening?

  2. On topic….

He has deserved it hasn’t he? Just further reinforces the fact that the club are willing to sit down with people and discuss deals.

Is this true though? When we signed up Tiote we didn’t bleat on to the press before hand so why the different approach?
I like surprise press conferences with GOOD news!

  4. Depending who is fit and available for Wolves, I’d go with Harper, Simpson, Saylor, Colo, Enrique back 4 then Jonas on Right wing with Barton and Nolan in the middle and Ferguson on the left wing with Best and Ranger up front.

  5. Even if you don’t see Simpson as long term 1st choice RB it would be unlikely we’d get better cover at RB, new contract makes sense…Joey and Jose 1st though please 😀

  6. Moreno…did the club officially say it though or did some gobsh!te just leak it?

Jill… no Willo? …think we’ll need his height v Doyle.

  7. Moreno…for me its good, as has been said he’s improved alot. At work we all want reward for hard work and improvement and that in turn sends out a message to the other players.Work hard and improve then you’re rewarded financially……Nile take note!! 😉

  9. Richietoon Steven Taylor is 6’2″ and Willo is 6ft 4″ so only 2″ between them. I think Taylor might be better at jumping up than Willo but not absolutely sure on that one. When Saylor was at his best I think he is better than Willo plus can be useful at getting the odd goal. But TBH there is not much between them. For me Saylor just has the edge but it is a close call.
Moreno we are often on the same wavelength 😀

  11. Moreno re your avatar of Pav, I thought it was him when I first looked at it then decided it wasn’t him as he looked so young! Should have known it as he was one of my fav players. 😳

  12. Everyone who criticises Pardew, yet at the same time supported the sale of Carroll, need to look at themselves first.
Everyone knew that we would struggle without him and when it happens people are surprised.
    Absolutely unbelievable!
I’m no Pardew fan but I am critical of those short sighted morons who urged the club to sell our prize asset for £35m and who now wonder where the team spirit and goals have gone.
You know who you are, do I have to name and shame yous?

  13. Moreno, who are your all time favourite players? I would have a big list! But at the very top of mine would be Solano and Malcolm MacDonald. Are you old enough to remember Supermac on a programme called ‘Superstars’ (I think)? It was a competitive show where stars from many different sports competed against each other at various sporting activities such as 100 yard sprint and shooting etc. Supermac was fast enough over the sprint to have been able to compete as a world class sprinter. I used to love his direct approach just running straight at the opposition straight down the middle of the pitch, he used to go through the opposition like a hot knife through butter! Lovely to watch, with a very powerful shot on goal at the end of it.

  14. BS,
I cant recall any fans i know urging the club to sell him. I think every single one of us would prefer it to havd been some horrible nightmare and him still to be here. I know a lot of fans who said good riddance if he handed in a transfer request but what you’re saying paints a totally different picture.

  15. Jill, i have seen re-runs of it. Was class!

I am going to be writing an article every week abour a past star so keep an eye out. You see the one about Pav last week?

I could understand if he’d smashed 10 goals in for them since he jumped ship. 🙄

Re who did the best out of the transfer deadline day.

We will only be able to tell on 1st September 2011!

  18. @toon chicken
Unfortunately the sale of Carroll is still an important issue. It’s not how many goals or the lack of goals he scored since his transfer, the point is, he could have been injured for the rest of the season and stayed at the Toon and we would be beating the likes of Stoke.
If you can’t see that the sale has destroyed the great team spirit we had then you are a chicken in a basket .
The top and bottom of it is, the club could have knocked back any offer from Carroll and Liverpool.
If Pardew had anything about him he could have persuaded Cazza he had made a rash decision.

  19. Nice video, Jill. 🙂

So in your expert opinion what would you deduce: Angel of Death, Rare Nervous Reaction, or another soft as sh!te footballer making a meal of a challenge? 😆

  21. BS – that is total hypothetical BS and you know it.

We managed OK without him when we came from 4-0 down to draw with Arsenal??

His magically uplifting aura did nothing to lift the spirits when we got humped off a League 2 side.

I’m pretty sure he wasn’t the glue holding the club together when he smashed seven shades out of Saylor either!

  22. Morning all 🙂

Agree Danny does need a new contract but I hope it doesn’t take priority over Joey and Jose’s situation.

  23. I hope we do tie Simpson down i think he has done well for us. I think alot of people wrongly judged him because hoots played him for a few months while he was carrying an injury.
Toonsy and the rest of the team keep up the good work lads 😉

  29. Simpson has done brilliantly fairplay to him, was a steal at 500,000. There aren’t many goals we’ve conceded where I could lay the blame at him, and for 1/20th of the price of Colo who is undoubtedly our best defender, he’s hardly 1/20th of the player is he. Add into the fact he’s had Joey ahead of him who whilst providing support often drifts inside and leaves our right even more exposed, he’s really coped quite well. Going forward he’s proved he can beat men and whip a cross in as well, even having the odd shot. Agree that we can wait on bringing in another right back, but STaylor hasn’t given me the confidence I once had in him playing in that position, and Perch well…he’s Perch.

  30. I say sign Simpson up. He isn’t perfect but is progressing nicely this year and has proved he belongs in this league. he has the athleticism and skill to become even better. With his forward play he COULD easily become an Enrique type player on the right. Shouldn’t cost a fortune in wages either

I was talking about that the other day to a mate (tactical debates are often topics of conversation) and I said pretty much the same. Barton drifts in which helps the midfield out but leaves Simpson exposed and he just deals with it.

Whaddaya know. If you raise VAT and put things up by 4% (petrol, diesel) then inflation will rise 🙄

    Baton down the hatches.

  33. Looks like Simpon’s got everyone’s backing, including mine. He’s still improving, so why would we not re-sign him? He does need competition for the place, mind, and I was disappointed that Saylor wasn’t so hot there last time.

Anyone else thinking perhaps Jonas should have a stint on the RW to give Fergie a start on the other flank?

Anyways I hope he does get a new deal as long as Bartons and Jose’s contracts are sorted before hand. Simpson is a good player, done well for us this season.
