Is Pardew right to eye experience?

Is Pardew looking at the right people?
Alan Pardew has tried to deflect some of the blame from the poor showing on Sunday, away from his players, noting how depleted the squad is at the moment.

Essentially he’s putting the blame on himself as he’s the man responsible for strengthening the squad and yet managed to allow it to get thinner. We have enough talent in the squad to stay up and the weekend’s result hasn’t sounded any alarms just yet, but I still remain cautious as these lads have proven to me once already that they know how to get relegated.

On most days the lads seem to have a determination and focus that would suggest that they wouldn’t let it happen again. Just who will be at Pardew’s disposal and the quality that they bring on match day will ultimately determine our fate for the rest of the season.

Having our better players back could mean us pushing on and getting those points to maintain a top half position, or the lack of them could see us coast towards the end of the season relying on what we have already done so far.

One thing that concerns me however, is Pardew’s latest assertion that he wants to bring in more experience in the summer. To me, experience is a nicer way of saying squad player.

Of course it’s important to have good squad players but the transfer policy should always be with an eye towards the starting eleven. Let the bench fill itself out. If you sign a player for the purpose of filling out your bench, then you can’t moan about lack of quality when injuries and suspensions kick in.

Of our top performers this term, only two had Premier League experience when they were brought in (Barton and Nolan). Whilst other experienced buys in the past and present have ended up being nothing short of useless. The likes of Owen, Geremi, Viduka, Butt, Duff etc spring to mind.

Good experience costs quite a bit of money, and isn’t always good business. There will be some good buys out there, but I want the club looking at bringing in players who will push for the starting eleven.

We will see this summer, the ambition of the hierarchy, and the kind of pull Pardew has with them. Hopefully we’ll be looking for better quality and won’t be looking at the Perch’s of the footballing world.

Let’s face it, the last signing we made on the basis of experience still has a lot to prove…

And that signing was Pardew!

  1. Ahh, well better than him not being there at all. im excited to see him play, him and ben arfa in a midfield. that’s special

  2. Very special!

    Looks like a;

Barton Guthrie Tiote Jonas midfield although I’d be tempted to start with toonsy’s favorite on the right and push Joey inside with Ireland coming on later.

I just feel Guthrie can be lightweight at times and Barton and Tiote would give us that bit of bite in the middle that could get us going.

  4. Toonsy please don’t ban me but I can’t help cringing at the nighty nighty club that goes on.
I’m old school and would tell my mates to stop being soft when they wish each other goodnight.
It’s like the waltons every night.
I love the cut and thrust during the day so don’t take this the wrong way.

  6. My Gaydar went off, now I see you mentioned Raylor which is the reason for it πŸ˜‰

Booby – Who do you mean when you say the nighty night club?

    Jokin?
It’s like the Waltons every night
If my dad heard me wishing other blokes goodnight I would get howked.
Night all. Sleep well. Will do. Hope you have a good sleep.
    I’m cringing.
    Sorry old school.

  8. Doesn’t cause anyone any harm though does it? I mean people getting along is great in my opinion, and if they wish to be friendly then fair play.

If football is mentioned they’ll all talk about it so I don’t see the issue personally.

  9. Ok.
    It’s probably just me.
I just don’t come from that nicey nicey background.
    😐

  10. Grown men wishing each other goodnight seems strange.
Anyway, according to .org we have bid Β£5m for a left back and been rejected.
If true Pardew is lying again.

  11. The last thing I want is for every fecker to be at everyone’s throat al the time. If I wanted that I’d just go on a messagboard and abuse people or go on Ed’s blog and make myself radge by looking at some of the damn right outragous comments on there.

I want this place to have a firendly feel to it. Don’t get me wrong, things will always get heated at times, and they always will, but as long as the general feel is friendly then I’m happy with it.

  12. Why is Pardew lying if Toulouse knocked us back? About Jose?

And it’s 5 million EUROS, not pounds, with the source being Tribal Football, which is about as reliable as your source Bobby πŸ˜‰

      (Quote)

  13. Bobby, I don’t think it’s true yet since the source was tribal football but I think he will be our no.1 option if Jose leaves.

  14. @toonsy et al
Might just be me. I just find it soft.
Can’t help the way I am.
It takes all kinds I suppose.

  15. @toonsy
I said, if true, then Pardew is lying.
If true why would they bid for a left back when Pardew has stated Jose is going nowhere?
If true, Jose who according to Phil Thompson is a done deal for Liverpool won’t be happy with a 5m euro (Β£4.5m) bid for a player considering Jose cost only a tad more.
Only if true, I suggest Pardew is lying.

      (Quote)

  16. Nah, he wouldn’t want a 19 starting in what really isn’t his natural position and we might over look this because he’s young but he’s not great defending.

He will get better though no doubt.

      (Quote)

  17. @toonsy
Nothing we’ve got the second best one in the league. Ashley Cole is the best.
But I’m saying if the story is true then I can only assume Pardew is lying about Jose going to L’pool.
Why else bid nearly Β£5m ?

      (Quote)

  18. You’ve misread my previous post. I meant Jose won’t be happy with the toon bidding for a left back . I wasn’t referring to me not being happy.

      (Quote)

  19. I wouldn’t put much credence in it to be honest. As said, Tribal Football have a habit of making stuff up and the fact that it has yet to appear in any mainstream news is pretty damning.

      (Quote)

  20. Fair enough.
Let’s hope so cos I desperately want Jose to stay.
If he leaves, (our best left back for as long as Ive following -30 odd years) , he may be the catalyst for Barton and Nolan to follow suit.

      (Quote)

  21. Bobby, I know it would be a blow to lose Jose and replace him with someone unproven but if he were to leave we could do a lot worse than M’bengue.

      (Quote)

  22. Right . Gannin to kip.
Pleeeeeeease don’t anyone say night bobby.
    See you the morro bobby.
The great thing is, nee one likes me so I might even get a choke on your pillow booby shit arse.
I would be over the moon with that!! πŸ˜›
Whos cage can I rattle tomorrow.
    Morono or twitters are easy.
    Toon Toon!

  23. Tell you what after watching Lens this season it’s confirmed he’d be a great signing but that Dzsudzsak is a hell of a player as well.

I reckon we could get them too or at least a lot more probable than Lukaku

      (Quote)

  24. I think the league in general is struggling financially and with them getting knocked out of Europe tonight and trailing FC Twente in the league it could be a good opportunity.

Dzsudzsak has a year left on his deal as well.

      (Quote)

  25. Yeah, plays on the left of a front three with Lens on the right although Lens played down the middle tonight.

    Dzsudzsak’s scored 23 goals this season and he’s a specialist set-piece taker.

      (Quote)

  26. We need someone who can score goals man. It’s my big worry for next season and where I think we should be looking to strengthen first πŸ˜•

      (Quote)

  27. Yeah attack minded players will hopefully take priority.

I know everyone has there own transfer lists and mine includes M’bengue, Dzsudzsak and Lens which would give us a cracking defense and midfield but I can never think of a striker that would suit our team and formation πŸ™„

      (Quote)

  28. I think part of the problem with that is the fact that we don’t know what formation Pardew has planned for us. What kind of players suits Ben Arfa? A clever player who can make runs? Someone to hold it up?

      (Quote)

  29. With him saying he wants Ben Arfa in the no.10 role you’d assume 4-4-1-1.

As for what striker suits him, obviously we wouldn’t go for him but I think the form Bobby Zamora’s in he would be perfect or a Kenwyne Jones on his day.

      (Quote)

  30. See I’m not a fan of playing one up front. I think it’s too easy to mark and if we’re going to do that it makes the wing positions less important and will narrow the play down.

I’d still like two strikers with Ben Arfa behind them.

      (Quote)

  31. True, it can make things narrow but Spurs play with one up top and their main strength is there wings. Dzsudzsak and Lens could be out Bale and Lennon with Ben Arfa our Van der vaart.

      (Quote)

  32. Good night, young bobby.

    Good morning, sweeties!

It’s so terrrriffficc to be here on the blog this wonderful morning. The sun is shining, the sky is blue and nature is singing. Purrrrrfect. I feel like I could hug everyone.

  33. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I to find this matter to
be actually one thing that I think I’d never understand. It seems too complex and very large for me.

I’m having a look forward in your subsequent put up,
I’ll try to get the cling of it!
