Manchester United memories – Newcastle 4-3 Man Utd.

S**t scared of Shearer!
With the game against Manchester United on the horizon, and with little news to digest, I though it may be a good idea to look back at some of the previous meetings between the two sides.

Now I think you will all know where we’ll end up in this mini-series, but before we get there it’s probably fair to have a look at some of the other, perhaps less memorable, meetings with Manchester United. A word of warning though, this mini-series won’t just be full of sweetness and light and there will be a sting in the tail somewhere. I can assure you of that.

First up, lets travel back in time to 2001, to the last time we managed to beat Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils in fact. A memorable day was on the cards as Newcastle edged a seven goal thriller that had everything from sublime skill to good fortune to temper tantrums. Enjoy.

First half.

Laurent Robert gave Newcastle an early lead with one of his trademark thunderbolt free-kicks before Ruud van Nistelrooy equalised on the half-hour mark. Newcastle continued to create chances however and can feel aggrieved that they weren’t awarded at lest one penalty. Rob Lee put the home side back in front however when his long range shot deceived Fabian Barthez in the Man Utd goal.

Second half.

The game was no less spectacular in the second half either. Nikos Dabizas put the home side 3-1 up before goals, good goals, from Ryan Giggs and Juan Sebastian Veron levelled the scores at 3-3. Alan Shearer – a true Geordie number 9 – then gave the home side the lead once again with a shot that was deflected past Fabien Barthez by Wes Brown to send the Toon Army into raptures. Own goal maybe, but it didn’t matter.

It was already a memorable game, but it was about to gain another talking point. Alan Shearer tried running the clock down by keeping the ball in the corner. Roy Keane then took umbridge with Shearer and threw the ball at his head. Shearer, as cool as ever, wound Keane up to the point where he launched a punch which Shearer stepped back from. A red card was dished out whilst Keane continued going loopy with Alan Shearer just staring on.

S**t scared of Shearer became the terrace chant.

I hope you enjoyed this. Keep your eyes peeled for the next one!

  9. Jobey – 😉

Robert was born in Reunion which is technically French soil. Ben Arfa was actually born in France but is of Tunisian descent 😉

  10. Tunisian descent even. Wikipedia has me all confused, says he is born in france on there. confusing stuff.

  11. Jobey – He was born in France, but his mum and Dad are Tunisian I think. Hence from Tunisian descent 😉

Correct me if im wrong, but on footymad, isn’t redcustard saying the self pity thing is out of order by using self pity by saying he was there?

  15. Agree with Dave, Roberts got a look of Benny about him like.

Couldn’t have been many Man United fans there – can hardly hear them when they make it 1-1.

  17. Just seen on skysports that Bassong is thinking about leaving spurs to get more playing time. Would any of you have him back if possible? and of course not being held ransom by spurs with a rediculous fee. He is a pretty solid defender and maybe it could work with Collo now they both got more experience in the premiership than last time around.

Sorry to go off topic 😉

  18. Ice – I’ll have to have a jiggle around with my routine but I intend to keep up with the four or so a day that people are used to. Remember, there are other people who’ll chip in aswell 😉

  19. Dave – Was he? I just remember us being in a mess manager wise and that he probably would’ve stayed if shearer got the gig? pair that with the fact that the board saw their chance of selling for a high price. I just dont remember him being like: “I cant wait to get out of Newcastle”.
But purely hypothetical would you have him back considering the terms above??? 🙂
