Shepherd would have sold Carroll!

Shepherd would have done exactly the same.
Freddy Shepherd has emerged from underneath his rock to pass comment on the sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool, and has admitted that he would have done much the same thing had he still held the reigns of power at St James’ Park.

Shepherd is not well liked by many. He insulted fans and club legends, turned a £100 million cash surplus into a £70 million debt and filled his back pockets with pay and dividends throughout his ten year tenure at NUFC. On the flipside of that though, you could never accuse him of not backing a manager, even if it was to the detriment of the finances of the club.

Still, despite his bumbling nature, Shepherd is still a fan who still likes to have a say on things at Newcastle. The sale of Andy Carroll has been one of the biggest talking points of the season to date, and Shepherd has decided to have his say on it.

“Selling Carroll has left the club weaker but, on that decision, I would have done the same. The reason I say that is the player had been given a contract five weeks earlier – all he had to say was ‘I’m going nowhere’.”

“He had been given a good contract from what I hear. People might not agree with me, but it’s a point of view. If he was so loyal, why did he leave?”

“I’m not knocking him. Personally, I think he’ll be the next Alan Shearer. He’ll be England’s No 9 for the next 10 years. I signed him originally as a kid and you could see there he had something. He used to boss centre-halves – you could tell there was something there from the start – and I wish him luck.”

I actually agree with Shepherd 😯

If Carroll really wanted to stay he could have said no to the deal and stayed at Newcastle. People will no doubt disagree with me and say how he was forced out, but I don’t buy that at all.

It was a great deal for the club, but it will only be a great deal if the money is used in the transfer market and to help sort the club out for the future. Time will tell on that one of course.

It’ll be interesting to see what people think of Shepherd and his take on the Carroll transfer, especially those who subscribe to the theory that Carroll was forced to leave just so that Ashley could stuff his wheelbarrow full of money and run.

Your thoughts please.

  1. Im very bitter when it comes to Carroll, I don’t want to see him do well at all – even though he probably will…

I still dunno how people can say Carroll was forced out by Ashley and co, no one forced him on the helicopter, no one forced him to sign a contract.

Personally, I’d love to see Tiote hurt him badly when we go to Anfield 😆

      (Quote)

  2. He was forced out wasn’t he? 🙄

Just getting round to watching MotD. What the hell was Cathcart doing?

      (Quote)

  3. Hate to say but agree with Shepherd.

Also agree with Andrew, although it would be better if it was Sayalor who snapped him 😆

  4. I would love it.

Also I wasn’t on yesterday so didn’t see what everyone thought of it but I thought everything Balotelli did after the game was brilliant, the wink was priceless and the way he was just laughing at Rio  😈

      (Quote)

  5. Dan 😆 Balotelli is a loaf short of a picnic and I loved the way he wound Rio up, but I just think he is going to end up doing something serious, so unless Mancini reels him in very soon he will explode.
As for FFS he was right about Owen as that was the main problem I had with him off field he done fuk all even when he was captain he had fuk all to do with us. Carroll well most allready knew if he wanted to be here he would still be here, I also think its funny that people would now like to see Saylor do him a bit of damage, but I can remember a while back it was totally different when Fans thought that Judas was teaching him a lesson etc etc and that Judas was a loyal Geordie hero that smack the unloyal plastic Geordie, So which one is it was Loyal to the Toon ?? 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😉

  6. Freddy needs to fook off, even if he is right.
My opinnion on carrroll is that he never wanted to leave but took some bad advice in trying to use liverpools offer to get a better contract.
That was all the board needed to cash in on him. I don’t know him personally so idk what I would do. Outside looking in it looks like a good deal for the toon. But I still feel he would’ve been a priceless piece to the puzzle, so unless I knew he was a complete tw@t I would’ve kept him.

      (Quote)

  7. JG then if so what it boils down to was that he was trying to screw the club that he “loved” just 5 weeks after he was happy enough to sign a new contract

      (Quote)

  8. Dave 😉

Knowing Saylor he’ll probably miss Carroll, land on another players Mrs, blather about it to the press etc etc 😉

    Better? 😉

  9. “I signed him originally as a kid and you could see there he had something. He used to boss centre-halves – you could tell there was something there from the start….”…Freddy deserves all the praise for signing Andy Carroll of course…. 😳 😳 😳 Didn¨t the lad start out as left back ?…..

Freddy Shepherd should stick to watching matches….where did this interview appear, surely not the Evening Chronicle ?… 🙄

  10. Toonsy I wasn’t having a pop at you or anyone inpaticular I was just speaking in general, that I think its good to see in the fullness of time that Saylor has proved to be more loyal than Judas

      (Quote)

  11. Aye true, but given his recent displays I’d hazard a guess that he’d struggle to get a move elsewhere for the money he is on here 😉

      (Quote)

  12. Shepherd is right. If Carroll really wanted to follow the foot steps of Sir Alan Shearer he should have stayed with us. He is just another modern day footballer. Nothing against him but I thought being a Geordie who idolised Shearer should not be doing this.

But will the day come we will be saying “It all started(success) with that 35mn CARROLL money!” ? 🙄

      (Quote)

  13. Toonsy I agree with you that he hasn’t ben himself lately but he is just back after a longtime out, I still think that he was as strong as anyone at the start of last season before his injury.

mithun_toon I just think that the days of proper loyalty to a club are at an end when Giggs and Scholes hang up their boots

      (Quote)

  14. No one held a gun to his head he wanted to go!!!
I would much rather be anticipating what the £35 mil might do for the club. As looking forward to another transfer window with £5 to £10 mil with carroll on the books. He left at the first offer so was never going to that loyal was he?

      (Quote)

  15. Dave, I’m not trying to defend Carroll. He can go rot in a bin at the scouse training ground.
Just trying to make sense of what happened with the evidence at hand.
In the end I think he got greedy off some bad advice… Numpty pr!ck…. Judas that is… 👿

      (Quote)

  16. Nutmag, how much dosh do you have left after you get carroll’s replacement?
Don’t think there’d be much difference problem is it’s a lot harder to replace him.

      (Quote)

  17. JG I wish he had stayed but he hasn’t so no point crying over spilt milk. I hope he will be a flop at Liverpool but he wont so I just try not to think of him 😆

      (Quote)

  18. Big D….Giggs and Scholes had to be loyal to Man Utd….they were sitting at one of the best clubs in the world, where could they move to better themselves ? Shay Given showed loyalty for that matter, but now he¨s seen as a black sheep by lots of toon fans….didn¨t do him much good personally…

I honestly don^t think we can expect loyalty from players, if they stay loyal well and good, but there are so many factors at play these days…

  21. I fear Judas will go on to rub our noses in for at least the next ten years. It¨s the sitting back watching his development, and all the media hype that it will bring with it which will do my head in…. As someone mentioned earlier, we^ll need a good portion of the 35 mill to buy Judas¨replacement for sure, unless we can unearth a future star in the sprogs…

      (Quote)

  22. Carroll may have left but that was following Ashley point blank refusing to discuss any pay rise on the final day of the window.
I’m not saying Carroll was in the right for making such demands but to not even discuss the issue with him is equally wrong.
Carroll is very young and I’m still of the belief that the L’Pool offers should have been rejected and Pardews experience should have been enough to convince him over the following 3 months to realise his real dream could be realised by staying at the club.
It sounds to me from reading Carrolls account and hearing Pardews, that there was a spat between the 2 parties but ultimately the more experienced party should have took the heat out of the situation.
If he is England’s number 9 for the next decade, £35m will shortly look undervalued.

  23. MM. I was looking forward to have a reason to support the England squad again. Now I dispize it more than ever… 😈

  24. MM I know what your saying about Manure but I do think in the players eyes Real and Barca are seen as the ultimate teams.
As for Shay he is still well thought off by me I dont blame him because at the time the club was falling apart and with the offer of what should have happened at Shitty 😉 but it didn’t work out that way

      (Quote)

  25. BS9, I couldn’t agree more. This was one occasion where ashley’s “buisness man” over club owner truely hurts us in my opinion.
But moving forward, hopefully we have the proper people in place to get the best value out of the money and strengthen the club.

      (Quote)

  26. Bobby how did you expect Pards to be able to convince him to stay when his best mate and captain was convincing him that the move was a chance he should grab ?

      (Quote)

  27. I agree he might not have been the best ever player signed, but apart from his injuries, I don’t think he was as bad as people make out. The only person who played him in the right/best postion was Keegan. He had him in whe hole behind the striker and that season, kept us up. When Fat Sam was in charge, it was kick the ball up in the air and hope the smallest man on the field could get it. I still think, injuries aside, if we had used him in the fight way as the horrible little pretend Irishman did the same as Fat Sam, we may have stayed up that season.

We need managers with a bit of nouse who can use what we have in the right and best way no matter who the player is

I can’t see us spending silly amounts on one player nor should we.£35 mil for Judas was silly money!£50 mil for Torres was silly money! £80 mil for Ronaldo was silly money!Spurs have done quite a lot letting Berbatov go.Its a team sport he did’nt want to be part of our team.

  30. By the way, that post was about Owen and not Caroll, I was just getting carried away and haven’t even started drinking yet!!

As for Caroll, I would have sold him for that money, it was still up to him to stay if he wanted

      (Quote)

  31. @Big Dave
    Quite easy really.
Everyone seems to forget Carroll is only a young lad. To end up in a heated discussion with him is always going to get a rebellious reaction.
Regarding Nolan, if Pardew can’t control Nolan then he shouldn’t be in charge .
I would have utilised Alan Shearer over the 3 months to convince him.
If the club had rejected the offer then Carroll would likely to be impressed by the club that they had turned down such a huge offer and with the heat being taken out the situation, I don’t believe it would be difficult at all.

      (Quote)

  32. JerseyGeordie….agree 100% about England mate….having Judas playing up front gives me more reason NOT to watch England… 😥 😥

I remember a few years back Shearer scoring a cracking header past Oliver Kahn, one of the Euro Championships I recall. Man was I a proud Geordie that day !! I think its something about great centre forwards that bring out the best in us…makes the Judas debacle all the more difficult to swallow 😥 😥 😥

BS Nr 9….agree 100% mate, a more seasoned toon management team would and should have been able to prevent Judas moving, however much money was being offered… The 35 mill will seem like peanuts the way prices are spiralling for average players…

      (Quote)

  33. Bobby I dont think at that stage Pards could have afforded to come down on the club Captain as it could have made the situation 10 times worse.
As for Alan Shearer I dont think that would have been a gooer after the way the Fat Man treated him like ****, so who would have approved the utilisation of Sir Alan ?
I do agree that the main reason he is not here was because he is young and stupid,

      (Quote)

  34. I remember Gazza being sold for £2m in the 80’s.
It seemed a huge amount of cash at the time.
Within a season or so, an average player was going for the same player .
As I say, if and only if, he ends up being England’s number 9 for a decade then the price tag will be cheap.
It was a gamble, but it’s one I would like to have seen the club take.
I genuinely don’t think the Enrique and Barton issues would be arising now.

      (Quote)

  35. Within a season or so, an average player was going for the same price.

      (Quote)

  36. Bobby the sad thing is that I think he will be the England No 9 and a real cracking one at that.
I know that things could have been done different but I still think no matter what happened Enrique would still have been considering his Spain place and I really dont think it would be that easy while he is at the Toon, Joey I think will stay providing the Fat Controller can show some ambition.
As for the club taking the Gamble Judas was allready a bit of a loose canon what would he have been like if the club had of gave in to his demand to be the top paid player at the club, and what message would it have sent out to the other players that Judas could demand that only 5 weeks into a new contract. I think he could have became uncontrollable and a right ******.
I honestly believe that the pro’s out weigh the Cons but thats only my opinion 😉

  37. Nutmeg, yes I agree it was silly money. But how much does a box to box striker at 21 years of age who wins almost everything in the air and forces teams to alter their game plan cost? Your already not going to get the Geordie #9 pride and what not.
I think if you can get one for 15/20 mil that’s a good price, but it’d still be a risk on whether or not he could handle the shirt. Once you equate the wages into the matter you have around 10/15mil left for other players.
So really it’s the same thing. I’d rather have Carroll and 15 mil to spend than 35 mil and a capping hole in our front line.
But w/e he fooked off so now he can fook off…

      (Quote)

  38. Dave you may be right but:
If we ended up finishing close to Europe Enrique may have signed already along with barton.
If Carroll deserved to be the highest payed player, what teammate could argue that? And they could’ve said to him, get well, finish the season off and we’ll talk money in the summer. But all they saw was the money. Both sides…

“If Carroll deserved to be the highest payed player, what teammate could argue that?”

I dare say quite a few of them.

“And they could’ve said to him, get well, finish the season off and we’ll talk money in the summer.”

They did. He was promised a revision of his contract in the summer. It mattered not one bit apparently.

      (Quote)

  40. JG the problem was he had only just signed a new improved contract 5 weeks before and that was after playing in the prem for only half a season. I just think we would have created an uncontrollable monster in the same vain as Shrek and I can honestly say I wouldn’t want Shrek in our team no matter what he would bring to it 👿

      (Quote)

  41. @toonsy
He young. He was in a heated situation. He wanted to know the Toon really wanted him.
According to Pardew, he came into the room with Ashley and asked to discuss a new contract.
They said no, without any figures being discussed.
How do they know Carroll could easily have been retained for a small rise. They don’t because they told him to get in the chopper which they had waiting for him.

      (Quote)

  42. How long was it before Tiote signed a new deal? I know it wasn’t 5 weeks but really it’s the same thing to me. The evidence tells me both parties got greedy and thus both parties will suffer for it. None more than the supporters though and that’s just right on corse for us…

      (Quote)

  43. Well, if we’re going by what Pardew said then he asked Carroll how much and Carroll couldn’t answer it.

      (Quote)

  44. JG I agree that greed was a factor but we all knew and expected that the Fat man was greedy for money, but I would have expected Judass’s love for his hometown club and the No 9 shirt to have over ruled his love for money 😉

  45. @Big Dave
He was allegedly on £28k per week with his new contract.
Liverpool then come in and offer in the region of £80k and a huge signing on fee.
Bearing in mind he had also gained a full England cap after signing the Toon contract and when players like Ben Arfa and Tiote to name but 2 who are on higher wages, is it that unreasonable to ask for a wage increase there and then to put him on par with the others.
    I say not .

      (Quote)

  46. @toonsy
He couldn’t answer cos he may not know how much the other players were on.
At least the could have tried to discuss it.
If he was making outrageous demands then fair enough, they could justify selling him.
They didn’t give him the chance.

      (Quote)

  47. ‘When you look at the fantastic players down the years who have worn the shirt, it sends shivers down your spine, it’s amazing.
‘Having grown up following and watching the team I’m obviously aware of the great tradition the No 9 shirt holds, it’s probably unique in football in that sense and, as I say, to be wearing it, is incredible.

‘Alan Shearer was my idol as a young lad and who would have thought I’d be following in his footsteps?
‘It’s every young Geordie lads’ dream to be a Newcastle United No 9 and I’m so lucky to be given that chance.

‘It’s an opportunity I relish and intend doing my best to do the shirt proud”.

How things can change in 6 mths

  48. Bobby to keep him we would have had to atleast match Liverpools over as he wanted to be the top paid player and allegedly Colo is on round that figure ?

  49. @Big Dave
    You say you
ould have expected Judass’s love for his hometown club and the No 9 shirt to have over ruled his love for money.

You keep missing the point. It was a heated exchange by all accounts. He’s 21 yrs old and more than capable of making a rash decision.

In the cold light of day he might have put his love of the Toon before money but that is where the experienced people, Ashley and Pardew should have took the heat out of the situation by putting faith in their communication skills and rejected any offer.

      (Quote)

  50. @Big Dave
I think its common knowledge that the contracts of Colo, Barton, Enrique and Jonas are not going to be as high when new contracts are discussed.
When there’s mention of matching the best paid players contract, I think it’s safe to assume they are referring to the new pay structure that Ben Arfa and Tiote are on.

      (Quote)

  51. @toonsy
They told him they weren’t discussing pay negotiations and therefore told him it’s either hand a request in or stay without pay negotiations.
It’s forcing his hand. Back to my point, he’s young and capable of making a rash decision.

      (Quote)

  52. Bobby he only had 6 mths prem experience and 1 england cap but yet he is demanding to be the No1 even though the club said that they would sit down with him at the end of the season.
So rather than insuring our prem status for next year he left it till the last day of the window to try to screw his hometown club.

      (Quote)

  53. Carroll told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle on Tuesday: “[Managing director] Derek [Llambias] asked me to hand in a transfer request, so I was pushed into a corner and had no choice. I wasn’t wanted by them and they made it clear they wanted the money.
“Then I flew down in [owner Mike Ashley’s] helicopter. I didn’t want to leave. I’m gutted that I wasn’t wanted at my home team after everything I have done and the progress I have made. I didn’t want to leave at all. Make sure they know I didn’t want to leave. The players, staff and fans were fantastic.”
At 2.37pm GMT on Monday, Carroll told Wraith he was “not going anywhere”, but by 5pm Carroll had said: “They have kind of said we don’t want u but want me to say I wanna go. And I said I don’t want to go.”
Newcastle claimed that they accepted Liverpool’s £35 million offer after the striker handed in a transfer request, but Carroll said: “No I didn’t that’s what I mean that’s what they wanted me to do and I said no. They said they wanted to accept it.”
Asked if he had no choice but to move to Anfield, he replied: “Looks like it.”
Wraith then asked Carroll if he had “any message you want put across to the fans?” Carroll replied: “They said they wanted the money. Gutted to be leaving Newcastle but I was kind of pushed out the door. Gutted to be leaving my home club but I was practically told to go. Didn’t want to leave that’s why i signed a five-year deal.”
