Manchester United memories – Newcastle 5-0 Man Utd.

A memorable afternoon!
At the start of this three part mini-series featuring matches with Manchester United I said that you would probably guess where we would end up.

And here it is: Newcastle 5-0 Manchester United. I don’t need a DVD to remember this game as I remember it vividly enough as it is. It’s up there as one of our best results ever in my opinion as we put the Red Devils to the sword on an afternoon that will live long in the memory of many a Newcastle supporter. Enjoy!

I still remember picking up the paper the next day and reading the headline “Howay 5-0”. It was the stuff that dreams were made of and was particularly satisfying given that Manchester United had overcome us the season before when we bottled the chance of winning the title under Kevin Keegan.

That remains one of the best NUFC sides, in fact THE best NUFC side, that I’ve ever witnessed. It took us to highs that were way beyond out historically average fortunes. It does make me wonder where some of those players are now though? An idea for an article perhaps…

Goals from Darren Peacock, David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer and a sublime chip from Philippe Albert did the damage on the day. That day was a long time ago now, but it’s still great to look back on all the same.

If you’ve not seen the first two matches in this mini-series then please feel free to follow the links below and have a look at both the good and bad side of previous clashes.

Newcastle 4-3 Manchester United.
Newcastle 2-6 Manchester United.

Howay the lads!

  1. Big Dave, you’re right…could be both.
Ah hell, I’ll follow along here and still watch regardless. Rarely get to see them play, so must take advantage, even if the results are poor.
