Newcastle United’s worst signings of the last decade!

Captain letdown!
Following on from an earlier piece on Newcastle’s best signings in the last decade, I’m going to focus this article on the opposite end of the scale and look at the dross.

For all the good players we have had at our club we’ve had more bad players. This article could go on and on into next week, but we’ll keep this one relatively short. Hopefully it will show that stellar signings are not always the way and that just because you spend a load of money on one player it doesn’t mean that they will work out. Here goes;

Jean-Alain Boumsong – Six months after his free transfer to Rangers, Jean-Alain Boumsong was signed by Graeme Souness for Newcastle for a fee of £8 million pounds. The reward for his six months in the SPL was a five-and-a-half year contract at St James’ Park.

Boumsong started decently in his first season at Newcastle and was played at the back with another clanger prone centre -half in Titus Bramble. However his form slowly hit rock bottom in his second season with him being at fault for many goals. Just 47 games later, Boumsong was sold to Juventus after their relegation to Serie B for a measly fee of £3 million.

Albert Luque – Luque received limited chances at Newcastle after signing from Deportivo for the fee of £9.5 million. The start of his Newcastle career was blighted with injuries with him picking up an injury in his second game against Fulham. Even though I feel that Luque should have been given more opportunities at Newcastle he was still a huge flop.

Luque’s highlight in a Newcastle shirt was his goal in the 4-1 away win for Newcastle in the Tyne and Wear derby. Luque ended up costing Newcastle around £3 million per goal in the Premier League before his move to Ajax.

These two transfers were investigated in the Stevens inquiry for suspicions of bungs. There has to be something dodgy about them! Also both of these transfers were made by Graeme Souness, the man who did a very good job of dismantling Sir Bobby Robson’s good work.

Michael Owen – Owen was a name that got everyone excited when he signed for Newcastle from Real Madrid for a fee of £16 million. At the end of his spell with Newcastle many fans couldn’t stand the sight of him, and still can’t to this day.

Owen was paid £110,000-a-week during his 4 year spell at the club which was blighted by constant injury, half-effort and lacklustre performances. Owen’s spell at Newcastle saw him score 26 league goals and for somebody “worth” 16 million that is a pitiful total. After Owen’s contract ran out at Newcastle he allegedly sent out a 34 page brochure to clubs advertising his availability. Surprisingly he got a contract at Manchester United but to my delight it has not worked out for him.

Xisco – Well, what can I say about Xisco? Xisco was a £5.7 million signing by Dennis Wise from Spanish club Deportivo. Most of his time at Newcastle was spent in the reserves with a number of managers all deciding that he wasn’t good enough for the first team.

The future seemed bright for Xisco after scoring on his debut against Hull City in a 2-1 defeat. Unfortunately that was the only goal that he scored for the club – £5.7 million for one goal is what you have to call a flop!

Xisco also feigned injury after Newcastle’s relegation to force a move back to Spain, and he got his wish with a loan deal to Racing Santander. He returned to Newcastle the following season and assisted Andy Carroll’s third goal in a 6-0 win against Villa after he was brought off the bench for a fleeting and rare first team appearance. Following a red card in the reserves Xisco was never seen again and was shipped back to his old club Deportivo on loan till the end of the season. Hopefully he will be moved on in the summer with no more appearances for the club.

There are many more awful signings which could have been discussed with the likes of Hugo Viana, Geremi, Nicky Butt and Mark Viduka. These previous dealings have all highlighted what flashing the cash can do.

I think I’d rather have astute deals such as Cheik Tiote and Danny Simpson for a combined fee of £4 million – or quarter of one Michael Owen!

What do you lot think?

Note from Toonsy: I’ve read a few comments from a few people saying that these best/worst players/signings article are similar. They are, but that it is the point and is why I published them.

Take a look at Dan4toon’s worst team of the decade here. It’s funny how two different people, that have never met each other, can pick nigh on the same players. Yet still people want to go back to those days!

  3. Army – As I understand it, Ameobi is 50/50 and will undergo a test. Harper is out and Ireland will be on the bench.

As for pictures, do you mean the one next your name?

  4. Agree with everyone in there like.

He wouldn’t be in this team because he was a free but for the wages he was meant to be on Craig Moore was appauling 👿

  5. I would of been better than Boumsong 😆

Am sure Moore didn’t play for us for 9 month and then when he did he scored and own goal and conceded a pen 🙄

  6. Army – Aye. Cracking player he was 😆

    What about Charvet 🙄

About your pic, pass. Don’t know what’s gone wrong with that like 😕

  7. i can remmber me sisters lad used to call him dufas hahaha, he was in the heart of defence with marcelino MY GOD

  8. correct me if im wrong but i think if barton shines 2nyt agaisnt man utd then surely hes got to be pushing for an england call up???

  10. its shocking isnt it dan!!! i read the other day capello has got the highest wage for any manager in the world!! 6m a year i think?? ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING!! he gave us the worst summer ive known for along time last year , england were a joke!!

  11. Agree with everyone on there Jobey, good article.

I would have had Nicky Butt in there just because I hate him 😆

  12. I know it’s easy saying it looking back but why did the FA give him a a extended contract just before the World Cup started, surely not based on the qualifying campaign 🙄

  13. Agree with all your nominations, Toonsy. Nice timing, as I’m going to watch the match tonight surrounded by arseholes in red (we are, after all, hundreds of miles from Manchester down here) mostly for the chance of hearing the reception for EMO. Cannot stand the little gobshite.

I feel a bit sorry for the stick that Butt gets. Sure, we could have done better with the money, but in his case – unlike many – I think the spirit and will was there. As long as we weren’t playing Manure, of course. 😡

  14. Surprised nobody’s come on here whining about how Xisco wasn’t given a chance. Why to people think that is? Every bit of evidence suggests he’s a workshy, petulent tit that believed his own hype, and who was signed more due to backhanders than talent. Christ, I hope he’s gone in the summer.

  15. Sorry. My bad. 😳

Comes from using the site in a tiny window, shrunk to look like it’s part of Outlook at work. 😆

  16. Andrew- He was absolutely brilliant for Porto a few seasons back in the champions league if It’s the guy im thinking of…

  17. Yeah, Cissoko is quality, he was going to move to AC Milan but failed his medical because of something to do with his teeth 😆

  18. Spencer- Feck off. He’s one of the most frustrating players i’ve ever watched, he thought he was fecking beckham

  19. Hi,
though I’m not a geordie I have a certain sympathy with you for all the crap you have had to endure. Just a question is Souness the worst manager you have had? He did’nt seem to have a clue to me bought boumsong owen (crock) and then, to pacify the locals proudly announced he persuaded Shearer whose legs had clearly gone to sign another contract. Anyway good season for you hope you kick on
