Another point gained! Blackpool 1-1 Newcastle.

Lovenkrands nets the opener.
Newcastle came away from Bloomfield Road with a point to show for their effort. It could, and probably should, have been no points though.

Not that I’m complaining of course as we’ve had our fair share of games where we have played well and not got what we deserved, so I’ll take this undeserved point on this occasion even though Blackpool will rightly feel that they probably done enough to win the game.

Newcastle brought in Kevin Nolan for the injured Danny Guthrie in a change that would have probably happened even if Guthrie was fit. Otherwise it was a case of ‘as you were’ after the superb committed midweek performance against Manchester United.

You could maybe have expected to see the same kind of performance again against a struggling Blackpool team who had only won one game out the previous 13, but it didn’t turn out like that as Blackpool caused problems throughout against an off-colour Newcastle who laboured all afternoon.

Blackpool started brightly and caused problems for the Newcastle defence. Their penchant for attacking football was there for all to see as they had the better of the early exchanges. However it is their defence that is their weak spot, and despite all the possession the home side had they were very nearly caught out by a quick counter-attack by the away side that would have resulted in a goal had Shola Ameobi not fell over at a vital time.

Charlie Adam was back for Blackpool after being passed fit to start. The Scot was deemed to have recovered from an ankle injury and gave the home side a welcome boost. Unfortunately he also gave the away side a boost when he gave the ball away to Joey Barton 30-yards from goal. The Scouse lad squared the ball to Peter Lovenkrands who drilled a first time shot past Matt Gilks from 25-yards. 1-0 Newcastle.

Blackpool could have easily let their heads drop, but to their credit they picked themselves up and continued to cause problems. They created chances through a combination of their own play and our own mistakes, with Tim Krul having to be alert to deny Blackpool after Jose Enrique broke one of the golden rules of defending and played a square ball across the edge of his own penalty area.

I’ve said it for weeks now, and been criticised for it by some, but Jose looks distant, almost uninterested at the minute. If he keeps up with the mistakes then he will need dropping as he is becoming a liability. That square ball resulted in a corner to the home side, which in turn resulted in the equaliser.

Charlie Adam swung the corner in for DJ Campbell to head goalwards. Jose Enrique cleared the ball off the line although the linesman flagged to signal that the ball had crossed the line. TV replays have proved to be inconclusive, but it didn’t matter as the goal was given.

Enrique was once again called to action a few minutes later as he cleared a Baptiste shot off the line before DJ Campbell headed into the side netting just before half-time when he probably should have done better. Blackpool felt aggrieved at half-time though as they feel that they could have had at least on penalty and maybe even as many as three. Martin Atkinson waved all of their protests away however much to the relief of Newcastle.

Blackpool continued to create chances in the second half. Gary Taylor-Fletcher glance a header just over the bar and Charlie Adam hit the base of the post as the home side dominated. Peter Lovenkrands was withdrawn for Stephen Ireland which was the wrong call in my opinion.

Bring Ireland on by all means, but do something with Shola as it appears that he can only handle 60 minutes of football these days. I’d have left Lovenkrands on and replaced Shola with Ranger as the Blackpool defence had gaping holes in it that the pace of Lovenkrands and Ranger could have exposed. Still, what do I know?

Blackpool continued to dominate but couldn’t quite find the winning goal that they will feel they deserved. A point is more useful for us than it is for them and leaves us in ninth place ahead of Sunderland on goal difference.

As I said right at the start, I’m happy enough with a point, but I’m not overly happy with the performance. Our midfield was poor today, our wing play was virtually non-existent and out attacking threat was virtually zero. Ian Holloway said after the match that his side put in their best performance for a long time. Regardless of that I still feel that if we played to our potential we could have taken all three points.

It wasn’t to be though and a point a piece it is.

  1. I’m happy with a point – the way we played, like you said, should have been none. After our goal we did nothing at all with was a big disappointed.

I only had the radio on so I havn’t seen any highlights but from the sounds of it Jonas and Joey both had poor games.

  2. Personally thought Enrique was one of our best players in the second half. Granted he had a nightmare in the first, it happens though. If there wasn’t the speculation surrounding him (which he hasn’t confirmed his intentions either way) there would be no way he would be getting this level of criticism. Once again, the media plant a seed in the heads of fans and they turn on players.

Why do you never hear, “Shola’s mind is elsewhere” when he plays badly? Nah you don’t, as the media haven’t linked him away with the club.

  3. Holloway ‘I don’t think we’re big enough’.

Gerraway man Simpson fell over it wasn’t a handball, and Atkinson has traditionally never given Newcastle anything, I think it was the most fair game we’ve ever had from him today. I like Holloway but I think he’s losing the plot a bit now.

  4. Enrique was one of our best in the second half agreed but he basically cost us the game in the first half, several itmes he was guilty of giving up possession/playing people onside, let alone the goal which I would lay squarely at his feet. Its not just speculation but the knowledge that the lad can play brilliant-and isn’t-that creates criticism. If you’re a brilliant player and you drop then you’re in line for criticism, such as Rooney earlier the season.

Shola was poor as well and removing loven was the wrong choice…but several times Shola won the flick on but there was nobody for him to knock down to.. even so why ranger or even kuqi wasn’t on earlier makes no sense.

  5. Newkie,

I agree that if a player plays badly he is open to criticism, but I remember a couple of occasions during that second half that Jose was gathering the ball at right back and hoofing it clear. His heart seemed in it when he was sprinting the width of the pitch to cover for Simpson being in no mans land. If we are honest, there were plenty more mistakes by other players that could have resulted in goals. I just feel Enrique is being targeted by fans at the moment and even if he was to play a blinder he would be ‘putting himself in the shop window’

  6. Jose has moments of class every game then seems to have moments of madness. He always goes on his runs and does 3 or 4 defenders.

  7. Moreno-Yeah, I do agree Enrique is getting a lot of criticism which undoubtedly stems from transfer speculation. I mean, I remember Tiote’s terrible pass to Nolan which caused us huge pressure, and he did a couple more, as well as dangerous tackles, but nobody got on his back like. We had a poor game, which is disappointing but makes up for our amazing game vs ManU which we were predicted to lose, plus Blackpool played better than they have in months. They did beat spurs lets not forget that, and when they get the underdog tag they’re dangerous, just like they have now..

    AOD-love it 😀

  12. MM was going to commet before game pardew would blame the m/utd game for the poor show, and he did,but didnt like the way the players seemed to haveing a go at each and waveing there hands about at each other,we lacked balance imo

      (Quote)

  13. Richie-Aye probably…I wonder if Carroll will ever kiss the Liverpool badge? or Torres Chelsea..

-Moreno, aye, hope he means it all like.

      (Quote)

  14. Ice…missed the game today due to other commitments…so haven’t seen owt of the players getting on each others backs…maybe it’s a consequence of Pardews apparently confrontational man-management style ?

You’ve got his interview sussed out though !….the poor lambs, 2 games in 96 hours….aargh…they should be ashamed of themselves…

      (Quote)

  15. Newkie….Carrol will get a kiss alright, a Glasgow kiss if he shows up in the toon…

Moreno, did you get your triple up today ?..

  16. That one I mentioned on here was 2 out of 3 unfortunately. Chelsea just sealed a £72 quid win though on another accum. 🙂

  20. Get in Batty, pretty astute going that mate 😎

I thought us – B’pool, Villa – Stoke and Wolves – Fulham were all safe bets for the draw.

      (Quote)

  21. Ice meant to add that I just hope he doesn’t let the players think there was any excuse for that show today because they should have more pride in themselves and the shirt

Munich 😆 Still hoping Smithy will be ready for the game against liverpool, break a few bones in the last min or so etc…

Yeah I’ve actually really enjoyed watching Real Madrid play recently which is unusual for a team full of c*nts as well being managed by Mournio, they’ve played some brilliant attacking stuff to be fair.

  24. it was such a poor game pity toonsy put another thread up,we might have got another 500 thread on last one and for a holiday sat, that would have been some going 🙁

  25. Newkie…I’m a Barca man mesel…bit disappointed in the midweek defeat against Real…not too disappointed though.. 🙂

Say what you like about Mourinho, but he gets the silverware in like.
I personally think that was one of the best Prem seasons of all times when Fergie, Wenger, Mourinho and Benitez were ***** slapping each other. Would love to see Mourinho back in the Prem…

      (Quote)

  26. Aye Ice…390 hits or summat, not bad for a game against Blackpool….

The Anti-Pardew mob on .org would kill for those kind of stats…but Toonsy just gets used to five star performances from his all-star blogsters… 😆 😆

  27. Munich-Aye I’m generally always in support of Barca as well, support them most for the champions league each year, but it seems like almost everyone does nowadays and if I’m honest I can’t help myself going for the underdog which has seen me appreciate Real a bit more this season, still hoping for Barca to win the CL, but i’ll take anyone over ManU 😎

      (Quote)

  28. to be honest i like to watch good players so enjoy both real and barca and watch both when i can

      (Quote)

  29. I’m also a Barca fan 🙂

Ive been to the Nou Camo twice for stadium tours – it really is something else, would love to go for a game sometime in the future.

  30. Newkiebrown….will have me Schalke 04 scarf oot for the Manure Champs League game, especially since wor lass is from Schalke country !! 😆 😆

Not many people know this but the toon of Schalke (Gelsenkirchen) is actually twinned with Newcastle… ***** gaff by the way…even wor lass admits it.

      (Quote)

  31. Have also been to Camp Nou twice, once Champs League, once gainst Espanyol. Immense stadium…Went to the top tier once, took me 20 minutes to walk up there …I was well paggered afterwards…

They put the Espanyol fans in the top tier…reet laugh…you cannot see, or hear nowt from up there…makes Level 7 seem like peanuts…need your binoculars up there big time 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  32. Yeah, never get where the media come up with us all supporting other English teams like…Fair enough I supported Fulham last year in the Europa League…but most teams, especially manure and liverpool, no chance. Loved watching Real destroy spuds as well 😀

      (Quote)

  33. I am a passionate Real fan and (nearly) have as many Real shirts as Toon.

Been to the Bernabau a couple of times but used to goto Mestalla a lot to see them play Valencia. Hate Barca! Although the Camp Nou is impressive. It’s so big it has an atmosphere even when it’s empty.

      (Quote)

  34. Moreno…do you rate the Bernabau higher than the Camp Nou ?…ignoring the fact that you are more Real fan and hate Barca…but purely as stadiums go ?

      (Quote)

  35. Flippin heck…I hadn’t realised Javier Hernandez has 19 goals in his first season for Manure 😯 😯
    The new Ole Gunnar Solskjaer….

Not bad for a first season….doesn’t auger too well for the chasing pack…

      (Quote)

  36. Oh oh..Dortmund blew it today…but the pot is still theres for the taking…

Now THERE is a bunch of radged supporters… 😯 😯

      (Quote)

  37. MM-Yeah but they’re all sh1te goals like . I’ve no idea how he scores so many **** header’s either….even so, he’s good but I think if he wasn’t at ManU then he’d probably struggle a bit, bit like berbatov having everyone do his running for him. Reckon Odemwingie has had a better season -13goals/6assists for 2million? and playing for west brom. Imagine if we’d snapped him up in the summer alongside Tiote and Arfa, would have been the perfect summer and given us an awesome team to build on this summer.

      (Quote)

  38. MM – That Hernandez is something else. Practically every shot on target. Top drawer, and for £6 million… 😉

      (Quote)

  39. Just think, Hernandez, tiote, Ben arfa and van der vaart and you’d still have 12 million left over from the sale of Carroll 😯

      (Quote)

  40. MM… I prefer the Bernabeu, been there a few times. Been to Camp Nou once v AC Milan for there season opener packed to the rafters and an impressive pre season show all round. San Siro’s not too shabby either like 😀

      (Quote)

  41. Newkie…I’d settle for his 19 ***** goals mate.. 😆 😆 …Watched Berbatov in the Bundesliga, he’s a magician with the ball…started great at Manure…but has disappeared now. Doesn’t have the balls for the fight I’m afraid….

This lad Omenwingie seems like a canny lad …also for the price…but Hernandez for 6 mill…he’s gonna be one of the steals of the century… Sensible lad too…just heard an interview with him…humble and polite…gets on with the job…nee bother…I like him..

      (Quote)

  42. Yalreet Richietoon mate… 😆

Camp Nous is freaking huge…I get the impression the Bernebau is more intimate, steep terracing, crowd closer to the playing field…San Siro also seems like a huge stadium, along the lines of the Camp Nous….

To think that a few years back we were visiting these stadiums and giving it what for……ho hum…

      (Quote)

  43. Aye toonsy-its bloody well mental. Show’s what quality Carroll ha…oh wait no, its just mental. Thing about Hernandez being so cheap though, he only had a year left and he knew ManU were interested, the Mexican club had to sell for what they could or he’d walk for free, and 6mil is a lot for them as well..

Out of interest, does anyone know how long Ireland has left on his villa contract? Maybe we could loan him next season and use up some more time… 😀

      (Quote)

  44. Newkie – Ireland has three years left mate.

And as for those four players, technically they should all be **** because they didn’t cost a lot 😉

      (Quote)

  45. Munich-he’s also already picked up the tricks of a long line of ManU forwards/players-diving. Flung himself over just last week looking for a pen, think thats why I might be a bit embittered towards him…that plus he plays for ManU and I’d bloody have loved it if we’d grabbed him 😆

Still out of interest, has anyone seen him score outside of the box? literally all the goals i’ve seen of him are headers/sliding knock ins.

      (Quote)

  46. Newkie@68…pretty sure that will be Ireland and the Fat Controllers tactic…let the existing contract with Villa run down, and we’ll give you the wedge when you come to sign for us. (Of course Ireland doesn’t realise that the Fat Controller will do a 180° on him and offer him half the salary when it comes to the crunch 😆 😆 😆 …)….

      (Quote)

  47. Ah right cheers Toonsy-just hope Villa don’t try and hold out too much for him if we do try and buy him, its kind of annoying with clubs knowing about the money we have, gives them all the cards 🙁

      (Quote)

  48. MM….I just think Santiago Bernabeu looks a more impressive, better designed stadium, Barca’s is impresssive only for the sheer size of the place. San Siro was canny, that was the cheapest thing we did in Milan, fekin expensive place like.

      (Quote)

  49. Nerwkiebrown…the old fart Gerd Müller scored the majority of his goals from insde the box…but they all count mate… Only the legend Alan Shearer could score belters from outside of the box….Andy Carroll too but …err…he doesn’t play for us anymore…scumbag…

      (Quote)

  50. Richietoon…hows the old Espanol going mate…signed up for the courses yet ??

We spent half a year in Spain a few years back, there seemed to be loads of free courses gannin round…

Toonsy…cracked the Blue Nun the neet mate ?
