Williamson unfazed by Anfield whilst Colo dreams of clean sheets.

Colo and Willo fired up for Liverpool.
First-choice central defensive pairing Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson have both been speaking to the local press ahead of Sunday’s trip to Anfield.

Mike Williamson claims he is not bothered by going to Anfield or potentially having to face Andy Carroll in the Liverpool attack whilst Fabricio Coloccini has targeted a sound defensive display as a springboard to picking up at least a point on Sunday.

Starting with Mike Williamson, who has performed well so far this season after signing from Portsmouth last season. He claims that he is relishing the chance of going to Anfield and testing himself against Carroll at one of the most famous football grounds in the UK. He told The Shields Gazette:

“I came here for big days like this to test myself and prove myself. You want to play at the best stadiums in the world every weekend.”

“I’m looking forward to playing against Andy. It’ll be a good test to play against him if he’s fit. Going to Anfield is a great occasion. I’m looking forward to it because I haven’t played there before.”

Meanwhile his defensive partner has urged the team to be solid defensively. Put basically, if you don’t concede then you won’t lose the game. It’s that kind of mentality that Colo is looking for as we enter the final few games of the season.

“We are proud when we keep a clean sheet,” Colo told The Chronicle. “It is not just the defenders because we all defend as a team. Every player works hard to get a clean sheet.”

“That is what we must do again at Liverpool and Chelsea. If we can, then we have a chance of a great result.”

Focus, focus, focus. That is what the lads have to do at Anfield on Sunday. As much as I despise the rotters I have to commend their recent form, even though it annoys me. With that in mind I think a point would be a good result. Obviously I’d like us to win, but I just can’t see where the goals are going to come from.

So if we aren’t going to score then we need to make sure that we don’t concede, which is why it’s nice to hear what is likely to be our central defensive pairing are both fired up for their own respective reasons.

Do us proud lads!

  1. Willocinni is our best defensive pairing and they could keep pool off from scoring. Though, midfield will have to support better than against Blackpool if we want a clean sheet.

  3. Trojan, Williamson is a better option than Steven Taylor who has just not performed of late, maybe it will be different after a pre season but i think he is the best to deal with Carroll should he play.

  4. I’ve just stumbled upon some new rules for the Champions League. Granted they’ll have no effect on us, but they will impact on the league as TV money for English teams is to be cut and shared out equally 🙂

That’s less they can spend 🙂

  5. Toonsy- you’re on a roll, mate 😉

I’m terrified of Carroll for this match- we have been getting absolutely bossed in the air lately. I prefer Williamson, but agree with bobby that Staylor may be the better option if Carroll starts

  6. nah man. We defo need Willo on to challenge judas in the air. They will probably hoof it alot his way. More worried about the speed suarez has. But luckily suarez needs like 10-15 shots to score a goal, think Krul will be able to deal with that.

  7. is it me or does steven taylor not look like he is carrying a few pounds too many these days?? he came on against wolves and looked rather chunky

  8. Williamson has to be the partner for colo, just don’t see where Williamson has cost us to deserve the drop. He’s not dynamic, but he gets the job done. Key battle will be midfield where Liverpool just swamped Man city massively, but City don’t have Tiote so I hold out some hope, if we can get the ball up their end of the pitch then we can score, Kyriakos and skrtyle? hah.

  9. Plus surely Williamson is the best to go in the air against Carroll? He’s basically the same height, its just that we don’t get “THE 6.4 STRIKER blah blah” every time you hear about Carroll..

  10. He is, or rather he used to be at Barca. I guess because Mancini starts with him and Barry then Toure is the only one with the legs to get forward and is allowed to roam, whereas Barry stays put. Fairplay he’s got brilliant pace when he wants to use it, he destroyed ManU in the cup match like.

  11. Maybe Newkie- Taylor has always seemed a bit better in the air to me, plus he has a bit more strength than willo. Not knocking willo mind as he has been very good this year

  12. True MDS, Taylor does seem a bit more of a battler in the air, I guess its a sacrafice in that you go for height or strength, and Taylor could be up for a bit of battle with Carroll…still i’d plumb for Willo just for consistency really.
