Mike Williamson or Steven Taylor?

Should he stay on the bnch for Brum game?
With only three games remaining this season and safety looking like it’s already been assured the question on my mind is can we still finish in the top 10?

The Liverpool game was one to forget and a totally unacceptable performance from the lads. As many of us said afterwards it almost looked like the players were on their summer holidays already. My fear was that we would see a lack of urgency and fight once we were safe and if Sunday is anything to go by then the lads are relaxed to say the very least.

Of course none of us expected us to go and give Liverpool a hiding, they are a side in form and still have something to play for this season. Liverpool had more incentive on the day to get a result, but the lack of commitment and passion from those in all white on Sunday lunchtime made me angry to be fair.

Jonas was superb and if his performance was duplicated by those around him it could have been different. Now I don’t want to point fingers at individuals because it wasn’t a good day for any bar Jonas, but looking at the defence there were a few problems.

Mike Williamson is a player I looked at, he played a big part in Liverpool’s second goal by not only conceding the penalty but was also guilty of schoolboy defending leading up to the incident. Luis Saurez was able to get the better of Willo with ease, although in fairness I am aware that the back four as a whole didn’t look to be at their best.

Mike for me is a funny one. He’s looked great at times and a bit dodgy at others. He is good in the air, and he has the height to win most aerial challenges. I’m certainly not saying I don’t rate Williamson, I do, but I’m not sure I’d start him every week. Mike I thought had a great game against Aston Villa at Villa Park a couple of weeks ago and I think he was one of our better performers on that day.
Ironically he was playing alongside the other man I’m going to talk about, Steven Taylor. Steven’s last start was that afternoon at Villa Park. If you can recall Tayls played alongside Williamson at the back, with Coloccini lining up in midfield. Steven had a shocking game that day and was even substituted. Williamson was far the superior defender on the day in my opinion.

We in truth haven’t seen much of Steven this season. He has had his injury problems and of course a rather public contract row didn’t help his case with the supporters. Williamson and Colo have been the preferred pairing at the back for much of the season to date under Alan Pardew, and before that Chris Hughton.
Steven has had mixed reviews from Newcastle fans in recent years, with some believing he is our best defender whilst others have insisted he isn’t good enough and he’s only rated because he came through the ranks and he’s a Newcastle lad. Sentimental feelings do sometimes pull the wool over people’s eyes – people have the same debate about Shola.

My question is would you like to see Taylor get a few games under his belt before the end of the season? Do you think Williamson is the better option? For me there isn’t much in it ability wise, they both have their strengths and weaknesses, but I do worry about Williamson at times. I thought he was very sloppy on Sunday and I would maybe like to see Steven get a start on Saturday against Birmingham. I just want to put out the best possible side and do everything to get that top half finish.

What do you think? Come the summer would you like to see us go for another centre-back or are you happy with what we have already with the three mentioned as well as Sol Campbell and Tamas Kadar?

  13. Carvahlo, Adebayor and Alonso should have seen red that game, Mourinho’s moaning before the game prevented that.

  14. On topic I think Taylor should be in the side after Williamsons cock up at the week end and he has looked a bit ropey for the last few games, so thats what competition is for 😉

  15. moreno im with you there mate! Uefa seriously got credibility issue with the refs at barca games.

  16. anyone even breathes on messi or pedro it’s a freekick, yet Mascherano can stand on people’s ankles all night and get no where near the ball for no reprimand.

Ronaldo got brought down bearing down on goal, fell into a barca player and it was a barca free kick! Completely mental! Everyone puts the Rose tinted specs on for barca because they have a bit of flair…they are cheating b*stards!

  17. They were both as bad as each other for play acting. But the better team went through.

  18. Always been a big Barca fan 🙂

The first game was a complete disgrace from both teams, they both tried getting each other sent off, thankfully tonight was a better behaved match.

The fact Madrid didnt get a shot on target until their goal tells you everything.

      (Quote)

  19. They did tho, they had a perfectly good goal chalked off, and it’s a bit hard getting a shot in when Mascherano takes down anyone approaching the box 👿

Was at the Madrid game Saturday…..now that was crap 🙄

      (Quote)

  20. Mascherano’s diving pissed me off like, I hate seeing players rolling round like they’ve been shot then get straight back up.

      (Quote)

  21. Aye, hate it. The ref was crap too. Can’t remember which players were involved but a Madrid player fouled a Barca player, the ref had his back to it but when he heard the crowd react he put his whistle in his mouth, turned round to blow but saw that Barca still had possession so played on. It was defo a foul but the cheating fecker wasn’t even looking 👿 ……..should be a good final…..be a better one if Schalke pulled off a miracle though 😀
