Potential cut-price deals?

Tomkins - A target for the Toon?
As the season nears to an end we’re going to be looking closely at the relegation battle, but for the right reasons this time.

It’s a good achievement to be virtually safe in my opinion, barring a major catastrophe of course, and now we can start to focus on next season. However it is very different scenario for the teams that are currently in the bottom five or so as they are all at risk of falling through the Premier League trap door.

As we witnessed two seasons ago you end up selling a lot of your team when you get relegated and the teams who get relegated this season will be faced with the same problem. With us looking for players who have got experience this may be one of the first places to look come the end of this season.

The teams that are in with a real chance of going down in my opinion are West Ham, Wolves, Blackpool, Wigan and Blackburn. Although most of these teams have spent most season around the bottom of the league I still feel that they have players who can improve our squad.

My first choice from any of these clubs would probably have to be centre-back James Tomkins. He’s currently playing for West Ham alongside a very shaky Matthew Upson. He looks one of the only bright sparks in a West Ham team which is verging on the drop. He seems very comfortable with the ball at his feet and he also goes in for plenty of headers, something that I think would complement Fabricio Coloccini very well.

Tomkins is only 22-years-old so he is around the age of players that we will be looking at and he is also versatile with him being able to play right back. Versatility is something that Pardew has previously mentioned, so hopefully in the summer he’ll raid his old team for Tomkins’ services.

My second choice would be West Ham’s Demba Ba. He only signed for West Ham in January but in my opinion he is too good to play in the Championship. Seen as West Ham have a lot of strikers on their books they’ll be looking to offload a few, and for the right price he could be a great signing for us.

Ba’s transfer fee was undisclosed but it was rumoured to be based on appearances for West Ham, so if they’re looking to cut costs it would be a good idea selling him before he costs them more. Ba has scored five goals in 10 appearances for a struggling West Ham team so in our team you’d imagine that he’d get more chances and hopefully be able to put them away.

Another player I’d like to see us buy from a team who could possibly go down is Matt Jarvis who is currently playing for Wolves. He’s been attracting attention from quite a few clubs but he is exactly the type of quick winger with a good cross that we’ve been crying out for. Jarvis played his first game for England in a recent friendly against Ghana which is probably not a positive for any team looking to buy him as that’ll drive his price up by at least £2 million.

This season so far Jarvis has provided Wolves with four goals and five assists, that’s a decent tally for a team who have been struggling heavily for goals all season. Jarvis showed great awareness in our recent 4-1 win over them to create their goal and hopefully next season he can be creating many goals at St James’ Park, for us this time though!

I’m sure other people will have differing opinions of who they would like to take from the bottom few clubs with the likes of Charles N’zogbia and Hugo Rodallega for Wigan and Victor Obinna for West Ham, so hopefully this sparks a bit of a debate. These may be on our radar as everyone knows that Mike Ashley loves a cut price deal.

So, who would you take?

  1. Yeah I thought of him, but I don’t think West Brom will sell, and they certainly aint getting relegated 😕

  2. I like Doyle as I think he is a team player, bit I also see peoplespoint when they say about his goalscoring record

  3. Witters- I’d just written a piece of Doyle on May the 2nd, didn’t wanna seem like Ed and Larsson 😆 😆

  4. I was surprised when West Ham pulled off the Ba signing. He is class.
Would have him in a heartbeat.

Tompkins and Jarvis are a good shout too, other than that 😕

  5. Samba from Blackburn
    Watson or Macarthy from wigan
    Nobody from west ham
    Nobody from Blackpool
    Jarvis from wolves

  6. Doyles a workhorse, good squad player but won’t take us forward imho. Dunno much about the young CB at West Spam but I’t probably the young uns on cheaper wages that they’ll try and keep hold of.I’d take Jarvis though 😉

  7. Solano – Ba signed a 3 year deal at WHU in January according to wiki! (I always thought he was on loan too!)

    Onto players I would take

    Demba Ba
    Matt Jarvis
    Junior Hoillet

@Jo Lee – As much as I like Odemwingie, isn’t he about 30?!

  8. I must have missed that thread Jobey…

I can see why people have misgivings regarding Doyle but for me he works hard, he’s technically very good, he can hold the ball up, he can pass to a team mate, he’ll join up midfield & attack…

His goal scoring record isn’t great but is it any worse than our current strikers when you bear in mind what else he brings…

For me he’s a definite improvement on what we’ve got…

  9. Although I will caveat my last comment in that i think Doyle is better suited to 4-4-2 formation as opposed this 4-5-1…

  10. Christ I’m so excited/nervous about the summer. I think we should definitely raid the relegated clubs if only to add some much needed depth with prem experienced, cut price players.

Just think about our pulling power now, some people say that the sale of Carroll will deter ambitious players but I think otherwise, we attracted Tiote and Ben Arfa after just getting promoted, and I genuinely think results like humping the Villa on our home return to the big time and the come back against Arsenal will have been noticed throughout Europe.

  11. I like Ba but I wouldn’t be too keen on him. He was going to move to Stoke but he has long standing knee trouble and I remember Pulis saying it’s fine now but in 6 month down the line his knee would flare up and he would need an op which would rule him out for months.

I remember Avram Grant as well saying if he didn’t have these knee injuries he would of been worth £15 million.

You just know if we signed him his knee would flare up straight away 😆

  12. I’d take Nzogbia back like a shot!

I quite like a forward line of Ben Arfa, Nzogbia, Guttierez and A N Other (Striker).

    Very impressive.

  13. Stu: I’d like it if Insomnia GOT shot personally. Personifies the difference in squad attitude and spirit between the descent towards relegation and now.

  14. I’m really looking forward to Kaz Lualua hopefully kicking off his toon campaign.

As mentioned before, Ba’s knee is more of a concern, than a goal tally he could bring.

  15. @Stu: Sorry, but I really hope we don’t sign Insomnia! Completely agree with what Whumpie said.

@Dan – I’d forgotten about the injury. you’re right. Knowing our luck with injuries, he’d get injured the day after he signed or something!

  16. Toonsy and Arran 😆

Also I’d be concious of the fact he might be another Amir Zaki 🙄

Ben Arfa hardly covered himself in glory when he forced his move to us, did he? He did worse than Nzogbia yet he’s welcomed with open arms.

    Double standards me thinks…

  18. I keep changing my mind about Zog, mainly in reference to his attitude probs but maybe he’s matured, can’t think of any probs he’s caused at Wigan and there’s no denying he’s a cracking player on his day.
I think what we need to remember about his “reported” problems is A) he was young B) he’s French, a recipe for problems at any club.
He had bother with Judas….Mmm could it have been the other parties fault maybe?
He fell out with Kinnear, Mmm(again), this is as well as him being played out of position, and who was playing in his natural position? Duff, Mmm I’d have been rocking the boat too.
What else did he do? said he wanted to play for a club with more ambition? Mmm can’t argue there either, he probably said, what most players were thinking.
    Yep, I’m agreeing with Stuart…..for now 😉

  19. I would take Zog, I also like Ba, but Stoke rejected him for a reason. Theres also the fact that the clubs are down the bottom for a reason, and so we should be cautious getting any players from them.

I would also take PArker back

  20. I think the point is Stu…Ben Afra did what he did at another club, N’Zogbia did it at Newcastle.

I dont want him back & if Ben Afra started throwing toys out of the pram here then I’d feel the same as I do about N’Zogbia

  21. Anyone go on the old Lesh site?! A rumour site with this on it.

    I heard Graham Hunter on Talk Sport yesterday saying that Newcastle had already bid for Oslvado of Espanyol, just been on youtube to have a look and wow he looks a real player, skills, scores with both feet and his head and is physical. Had a look at Gemiero also after reports in the Chronicle that we had bid for him and he looks good too although Oslvaldo would be my choice if I had to make one, of course both with HBA plying in the hole would be even better. Ed any news on what Graham Hunter and the Chron are saying and likelihood of either or both picthing up at SJP next season? {Ed001’s Note – Gameiro I know you are interested in, nothing new to add as you just seem to be keeping a watching brief on him rather than actually making a move. Maybe, like yourself, the club prefers Osvaldo? I hadn’t actually heard that about Osvaldo, I will have to look into it and see if I can dig up anything.}

Cheers Ed, much appreciated, waiting with baited breath.

But also had this on so maybe not as good as I think!!!

  22. Raffo 😆 ……I’ll agree with anyone who I thinks right tho…doesn’t mean it is right, just that in my opinion it is 😉

  23. I think Zog would fit in well with how I suspect Pardew is thinking we need to play – the quick counter-attacking style.

    I’d take him back.

  24. Bris…exactly, how many, quick, left footed players with proven prem experience who would come to us(possibly) are out there?

  25. Definitely good players to be had from the relegation candidates. I’m with Stu on N’Zogbia, never wanted him sold in the first place, and our team is lacking so much for natural pace at the minute. Same argument for Hoillett at Blackburn.

While Matt Jarvis is a cracking player, having him necessitates dropping Nolan or Barton, something I don’t think Pardew will do. Need to look to the future though, and I don’t think Nolan will cut it for much more than another season. Same with Scott Parker… but I’d take him any day over Nolan.

Tomkins I’d be wary of, I remember him having an absolute shocker against us at St. James’, and its never ideal to sign defenders off relegated teams…

If Blackpool go down… DJ Campbell maybe? Not as a first teamer, but exactly the sort of goal poacher we need, and probably get him on the cheap.
