Could Jonas be off?

Jonas off in the summer?
I was reading an NUFC article in yesterday’s Journal and I noticed a bit that seemed to suggest that Jonas Gutierrez could be off in the summer.

Basically it was saying that even though were not actively looking to sell, if we were to receive a very good offer for him we would accept it, which you could argue would be the case for any of our players. But lets not go there, again…

It was saying that with Jose Enrique looking like he could be away this summer Jonas is concerned by the impending departure of his close friend and may feel the time is right for him to move on after three years with us.

For me I wouldn’t be too concerned if Jonas was to leave. In fact I’d snap their hands off if someone were to bid in the region of say £7 million pounds. I know people defend him and say without him this season we wouldn’t be where we are or that he should be playing on the right on his strong foot. I agree to a certain extent with these conclusions.

However I just feel that next season we should be pushing on and looking at better than Jonas. A winger who can actually cross and who isn’t there just to get fouled would be nice! Also if Jose did leave and we got a new left-back in then they wouldn’t have the same chemistry as he did with Jose and he would be less effective than he already is.

Jonas has been a great servant, especially over the last two years, but it’s time to move onto the next level, in our our starting XI at least. It would be a sad day though if two of the ‘three amigos’ were to leave as their flair complimented our hard working ethos really well.

So it could be adios, Amigo’s to Jose and Jonas this summer!

  1. We need better than Jonas if we want to improve, wouldn’t mind having him for cover but I would be tempted to cash in on him and buy someone who can actually cross a ball 😉

  2. definitely definitely don’t want to see Jonas leave. Would be a pointless step backwards and I feel we can buy a specialist winger for the right who can play on the left as well as competition for Jonas. On his day he’s a real asset, off his day he is a very fine squad player. Would be ridiculous to sell him and the fallout from both Jose AND Jonas leaving could well prompt Colo to consider his options. Definite keeper for me.

  3. Jonas is brilliant on the ball but his crossing is as bad as i’ve seen from a winger and therefore his assists is poor when you consider he’s played more minutes than anyone else this season.

For that reason he could go for me.

  4. Wouldn’t want to see him leave simply because I don’t see us buying enough players to replace all these positions. We already need two strikers, one winger, and possibly 2 full backs. If we lose Jonas too, we’re going to have to buy almost an entire team. And there is no way that is going to happen.

I’m guessing we’ll see 3 players come in, and 1 leave. This won’t be enough, but we’re Newcastle. We’ll make do with what we have. 🙁

  5. Would like to see him deployed on the right. Still think he is a real asset, bacause when he is on fire his dribling is superb and he can really challenge his opposition. However I do see a problem with his overall contribution, goals and assists, and that we could bring in a more “productive” player, because he still contributes with dribling, drawing 2 man coverage and drawing fouls around the box, which leads to valueable set pieces. All in all I would still keep him, as he is a great character and a good player and has one of the best goal celebrations around. Shame we dont see it very often 😥

  8. Jonas

his crossing all depends on who we have up front. If we have two guys who are say 5 foot 9 crossing doesn’t come into it.

For me hope he stays. As mentioned above for who many would like to see on the flank he is a reasonable option. Everybody are looking for widemen and they all cost top dollar. Can we afford better?

  9. Would prefer him to stay if I’m honest, second in our assists this season behind a brilliant joey Barton, Jonas has also scored the same amount of goals as him from open play, and won us dangerous free kicks from which Barton and Newcastle as a whole have profited. Don’t really see the point in selling him-if we got a ridiculous bid then fair enough, but if we sell Jonas then we either need to deploy Arfa on the left and so by basically 3 new strikers, or keep arfa there and buy two strikers and still two wingers. Fergie might get some appearances on the left, but a full first team position at left wing? Still too early I think.

Besides, if you heard what Messi said about him at the beginning of the season…Jonas is as good as Fabregas and Rooney….apparently 😀

You are correct in what you say. There is no way we are going to address every weak spot in the team in the next window. Two to Three years it will take minimum

  11. Exact point Dan. But will there be any club to bid 7mn for him. Can’t see offers coming from PL. Mostly from Spain and Italy.

  12. i want him too stay as i think he has been 1 of our better players this season ,and keeps opposition players well busy and wins us a fair few free kicks 😉

  13. Much as he infuriates me, due to the fact he has the ability but frustrates the hell out of me – we need to keep him. Just think how good he could be if he tried staying on his feet!
A switch of flanks might be the way forward but that doesnt really solve any issues unless young Fergie bulks up and plays left side.

  14. When he doesnt play it is amazing how many times we get penned into our own half, Just him running the ball out helps the team massively.

His crossing could be better like but so could 90% of the wingers we could attract, Jose would also be half the player without the cover he gets from gutierrez IMO…

  15. Cant see why we would get rid of a player that offers more to the team than 75% of the others, backward step imo.
Ice hope your feeling better mate 😉

  16. CC, Jonas does help Jose defensivley but going forward I feel he can be a hindorence. When Jose goes on those lung bursting runs Jonas should go inside and take a defender with him but he just stands there or follows him and so a lot of the times he’s just in the way.

  17. Dan4toon – I have to agree Jonas sucks anyspace out of the game when Jose has the ball. Just needs to either show down the line more or move inside to open up the flank.
One of the resonbs most of Jose’s runs seem to just go in circles for a while

  18. I cant be the only one who cannot understand the reaction on eds to us being linked with Defoe

We have been crying out for a sharp little finisher all season even when Carroll was here

  19. Aye CC, with spurs looking to sell at least one striker defoe would be the one I’d take, but obviously the problem is pricing, would I take him for the 16mil they paid? No chance, and Spurs do drive hard bargains

  20. he definately neeeds to saty. His final product may be lacking but he is great at holding posessionand causes nearly every club we play fits down the left. Unfortunately we have trouble taking advantage of the open space in the middle of the pitch that it creates.

  21. CC…I generally don’t understand the reaction on Ed’s to most things 😉 😆

  22. Jonas is worth mire to our squad than 7 mil. If we had a ready replacement then maybe I’d contemplate it but why would we get rid of one of our better players when our squad is already thin and there are far worse players that should be moved on first?
If he was looking to leave that would be one thing but everytime the question comes up he shoots it down saying he’s not going anywhere.
