What are YOUR hopes for the summer?

Reckon this chap is available on the cheap?
Newcastle’s victory over Birmingham on Saturday ensured the club remain a Premier League team next season. Even if the season were to end now we find ourselves on a respectable 44 points in our first season back in the big time.

Of course there are 6 more points to play for with 2 games remaining, starting with a trip to Stamford Bridge and then our season concluding with a home game against West Brom. All 3 promoted teams have done superbly well this season. Even if Blackpool are to be relegated come the end of the season they can certainly hold their heads up high, with Ian Holloway’s men exceeding many people’s expectations.

Newcastle have exceeded a few expectations themselves this season. Many fans said they would happily settle for 17th place come the end of the season, avoiding relegation was the club’s target for the season and that has already been achieved- thank goodness! Newcastle are now hoping to finish the season in the top 10 which would be excellent.

With safety guaranteed manager Alan Pardew is able to plan ahead for next season. Pardew will be hoping to build on this season’s success and take the club forward gradually. So just what type of business will the Newcastle boss be hoping to do this summer? I jest with the article picture in terms who Newcastle can attract, I think it’s safe to say Messi is out of the question. But it would be nice to think about who might arrive rather than who may leave.

We all know how it seemingly works with the Southern press. This season in particular it’s more about who will leave Newcastle during the summer rather than who will arrive. Joey Barton and Jose Enrique have been in the spotlight for months and frequently linked with moves away from the club. Both players have starred for Newcastle United this season so it’s hardly surprising that they have attracted potential interest from elsewhere.

Both players have only a year or so remaining on their current contracts which will naturally fuel speculation on their futures at the club. Alan Pardew and the fans alike will hope the pair of them sit down with the club and discuss new deals. We know the club will be in the top flight next season so hopefully the wheels can be put in motion and discussions can progress. The contract issues have been a talking point for some time and it’s certainly not the only business that must be ironed out during the summer.

Quite often the second season in the Premier League proves to be tough and you see newly promoted teams find the second year a bit of a struggle. Maintaining the good feeling and a strong dressing room will be important to Newcastle. This is why the club will want to bring in the right kind of player, it’s all well and good being a talented footballer but what good are you if you disrupt the harmony of the locker room?

With this in mind who would you want to bring in? You would hope we are capable of attracting a high calibre of player with the right attitude. Newcastle lack strength in depth this season and have a small squad, so it could do with padding out a bit. Of course there are probably a few players that will be surplus to requirements, the likes of Sol Campbell and Shefki Kuqi are very unlikely to have their short term deals extended. This will leave the squad even lighter.

I personally would like to see a commanding centre-half brought in along with a couple of natural wingers and a striker or two. Pardew claims the club have already made enquiries about certain players and we have found ourselves linked with various names, some slightly underwhelming and to be honest some names have cropped up that we don’t have a chance of getting to this club at the moment.

It’s a summer that many fans are slightly concerned and anxious about . What are the intentions of the owner? How much will he actually be willing to spend on players? Will we be successful in renewing players contracts and will we show some ambition and keep hold of our better players if offers are put our way?

It’s safe to say those in charge of our club are quite unpredictable and at times untrustworthy. Putting aside the intent of Mike Ashley and co what are YOUR hopes for the summer? I want to know who you would like to see arrive and depart and what your opinions are on players contracts now were safe?

  1. Bit of a late night post, but I would love is to get a left back, (whether Jose goes or not) 2 actual wingers with pace and ability, and 2 top strikers. A better right back would be nice, but I think that Simpson can progress his game over the summer.

Now, who those players should be exactly, I wouldn’t be able to say. Most names I would throw out would merely be a mix between what I’ve read about in the press or what i’ve seen on YouTube or video games

  2. I really think that there could be money available for these kinds of players. Especially since the scouts are looking around Europe where the money isn’t as big.

This close season could really help us to progress quite well!

  3. Good read mark.
Agree with Andrew. 2 strikers, 2 wingers, LB and CB. As far as names, anyone Carr rates πŸ˜‰
Out: shefki, xisco, sol, lovenkrands, and smudge/raylor.

  5. No risk transfer buys for me, premier league proven players, we have gambled overseas in the past and had our fingers burnt, apart from Tiote.

    Get fooked by Cheryl Cole
    Win lottery
    Jack in work
Read toon have signed messi , ronaldo and a couple of other top players
Spend rest of summer on necker beach or whatever it’s called with a load of super models

I’ll take a few decent signings and Barton, Enrique committing to new contracts failing the above

  9. It appears that we’re said to be close to a deal involvin Jose for Paul Konchelsky.

Ok it’s media talk but it’s suggesting that Pardew’s keen on Konchelsky and if that is the case, there’ve got to be questions asked about his judgement.

For chrissakes, if PK aint good enough for Liverpool, then how TF’s he considered as good enough for us?

  10. If only messi would force a move, eh! πŸ˜€

I was wondering, has there ever been a really top class player move from a big club to a smaller club during his prime and single handedly change league position?

  12. Gads! I’ve only just managed to struggle through the last summer, I don’t want to think about another one for at least 6 months! πŸ™„

As for the close season, well, I’d like to see a couple of defenders, a couple of midfielders (with at least one winger), and a couple of forwards (with at least one being a noted goalscorer). We need to strengthen the right side.

  22. IF Enrique goes to Lpool for 15mil then I’d hope for sylvain marveaux who was supposed to be a target for them. He’s a left winger/wingback-so pick him up on a free transfer, then Mbengue as well for cover/replacement. If Wigan go down possibly get Nzog? still undecided on the matter really-maybe try and trade Rtaylor back to them πŸ˜› Then two strikers? I’d hope for Gamerio but don’t hold out too much hope

  27. Samba would be a good addition – I hear today he’s up for a change in the summer, doubt we’d get him though.
Defo need 2 strikers and ideally two attacking midfielders/ wingers. We’re looking a bit old!
Looking at the teams that may drop – I’d have Adam and Jarvis!

      (Quote)

  28. Kim KΓ€llstrΓΆm, Anthony RΓ©veillΓ¨re (DR), FranΓ§ois Clerc (DR), AndrΓ© Ayew (MR), Lucho GonzΓ‘lez (MC), Taye Taiwo (DL)… are probably the only players from Lyon and Marseilles I would want… believe we were scouting those teams.
Other players in the French league would be Gervinho (RW/ST/LW), Cheick Mbengue (DL), MickaΓ«l ChrΓ©tien (DR).

The best striker we could possibly go for is Papiss Demba Cisse, who currently plays in the German top league. Great player.
Other options would be Kolbeinn Sigthorsson or BjΓΆrn Vleminckx.

As for players we could attract in the English Prem. I’d only want Jarvis. Or maybe a sneak bid for Kieran Gibbs from Arsenal.
