It’s all about the quality.

Gameiro unlikely, but we shouldn't stop chasing this quality.
The summer transfer window is fast approaching, bringing with it excitement or dread depending on your expectations.

We’ve been linked with many players already, and there will probably be a few hundred more to follow. I’ve been trying to watch a lot of football lately involving some of the players we’ve been linked with, and picturing them in black and white. But who will we get and who should we get?

In the past we’ve lured many players to the North East by simply offering more money. That approach didn’t really work in terms of getting what we paid for.

We might possibly be in a position to slip into old form this up coming transfer window with the reported “war chest” possibly in hand, but I’m hoping we don’t. I have no problem with the club paying competitive wages and paying a player what he is worth, but if a player needs to be convinced with money, then I don’t think it’ll be money well spent.

All the players we sign this summer will be signing for more money than what they were previously on. But we need to find players that want to be here and want to bring and have success with this club. Some players we will miss out on because we don’t have the prospect of Champions League football next year, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t sign a Champions League quality player.

Gervinho is a player we will most likely miss out on due to the fact that other clubs interested in him are offering a higher level of football. I personally don’t think his skill fits with the style of football in the Premier League. He is a very classy player but I don’t think he could handle the pace and power of the Premier Peague on a regular basis. A club like Arsenal might mask that, but anywhere else in England and I think he will be a flop.

Kevin Gameiro on the other hand looks well suited to the Premier League. He’s very pacey and puts in a good shift. He’s a clever finisher and reads the game very well. He reminds me of a watered down Wayne Rooney or Michael Owen when he was still useful, but it’s also unlikely we’ll get him as he too seemingly wants to play in Europe and I believe, above all, wants to play in Spain.

We will run into these kinds of problems whilst trying to fill that No9 shirt this summer, but we also don’t have to fill it this summer and we definitely shouldn’t be filling it with another football mercenary.

Right now I’m looking forward to this summer as the pieces seem to be in place to have a good transfer window. Our owner seems a little more willing to spend, our scouting network seems well oiled and running smoothly, and Alan Pardew seems to be the right salesman to pitch the dream that is Newcastle United to potential targets.

Now we just need to lock Derek Llambias up so he can’t ruin it all!

If we can do that then we may just be pleasantly surprised with how the team sheet looks come September!

  1. Ice aye, if there’s one guy I’ll never warm up to, it’s that owl heeded bass tart πŸ‘Ώ

  2. I agree we want a quality Centre Forward who can convert chances. With HBA in the hole and Nolan linking the midfield I expect the rest of the signings to give competition for places. Yevhen Seleznyov would be my choice for Centre Forward, but Rondon & Sigthorsson would be good. Elsewhere we need to perform more consistantly. We don’t need many “Quality” players.

  3. @JG

I like to pick, what I perceive to be, holes in people’s views or opinions however I’m in agreement with the vast majority of your post, however can you clarify what you mean about, we don’t need to fill the number 9 shirt this season?

  4. Bobby I mean that we don’t need to get that star striker that will pull the shirt on and be here for years to come. We need strikers but we will still be in a good position to move up the table if we bring in two quality fowards. But I think it would be difficult to get the level of player that shirt deserves without buying a mercenary that would be here for the money. Doesn’t mean we shouldnt look mind, just don’t force a bad decision.

  5. i would like to see us bring in a new striker a right winger n a right back. N maybe 2-3 other players depending on who leaves

  6. @JG
I feel frustrated, I normally disagree with people.
Can’t wait til some of the others come on. πŸ˜€

    Jokin Mr Toonsy πŸ˜†

  7. I like the idea of us getting both guys from Toulouse, and switch Jonas to the RW. I still think we are in with a chance of keeping Jose, it just depends if he wants to stay or if he wants to leave like Judas. I think the window will be very exciting for us this summer

  8. Ok, back on thread…

Agree with your assessment as usual, Jersey, especially that last bit.

BUT I’m yet to be convinced that AP is as good at working out what he needs as CH was. Loaning out Routledge and in Ireland wasn’t exactly the work of genius.

To be honest, I still can’t get excited about new players until I know what’s going on with the old ones. Jose, Joey, Jonas, Colo – I just hope we can keep them.

  9. ‘BUT I’m yet to be convinced that AP is as good at working out what he needs as CH was.’

What like Fabrice Pancrate and James Perch. πŸ˜•

  10. I’m hoping that what transpired this past January had more to do with pards not having any money for transfers and not a lack of transfer savy.
It feels to me like we’re a little more organized going into this window than previous ones.

  11. @raffo
    You say;
I still think we are in with a chance of keeping Jose, it just depends if he wants to stay or if he wants to leave like Judas.

Never. Any more pearls if wisdom raffo? πŸ˜› πŸ˜‰

  12. DJG – name me a manager who has a better hit rate than CH and I’ll be impressed. Those two out of all the good ones he signed is better going than anyone I can think of.

  13. Bobby I’ll make sure to throw in something obsurd next time so we can have some banter πŸ˜‰

  14. Batty – Routledge is still a hell of a lot better than the six feet of air we replaced him with. Stupid decision which has cost us points.

Would you rather play Raylor on Sunday?

  15. Dan – perhaps I’m full of the joys of Friday, but I quite like what Ranger has to say there. Sounds like Pardew’s really got through to him.

I hope he gets a start on Sunday; thought he was brilliant last week, and we know what happened last time he went to Stamford Bridgeski… πŸ™‚

  16. BS9 – ta for the optimism; I tend to agree. I think the club just have to explain to Toro Nino that he can stay put and still get his Euro games and a place in the Spanish national team.

  17. Better get the bus warmed up Stardust, Toonsy’s nearly through his PSV and’ll be looking for a top-drawer appointment!

  18. Whumpie, yeah I want Nile to start.

    The worry for me is what’s the midfield going to be, no Nolan, Guthrie, Tiote, Gosling, Ben Arfa and Smith might just make the bench;

    Routledge R.Taylor Barton Jonas?

Or if Routledge isn’t back put Inman/Donaldson Centre midfield?

  19. Talking of Routledge (and I think only I was, but so what) I think if he’s available he should get a game. He has a point to prove regardless of what shirt he’s in next season. Put Barton in the middle.

But who else in the middle? No Tiote, Nolan or Guthrie… ick. 😯

  20. Whumpie I agree. Ranger definitely looked a little more focused last week and maybe his prior appearance too.
I’ve been leaning towards the side of not sending him on loan next year. I know he’ll have a tough time getting regular first team footy here but, I don’t want to waste the progress he seems to be on. If we send him away he may slip back into gangsta ranger πŸ™„

  21. Whumpie πŸ˜‰

    According to some people though Routledge is still in London and that’s still his location on Twitter so if he’s not back I think a 4-3-3/4-5-1 of;

    Simpson S.Taylor Coloccini Enrique
    R.Taylor Barton Jonas
    Ranger Ameobi Lovenkrands?

  22. Shame vuckic isn’t available.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a 5 man mid field with a couple younguns.
Jonas- Inman – Barton – Donaldson – fergie
    Shola / ranger

  23. @lesh

Dustys bus broke down ages ago and can’t get it started again! πŸ˜†

You thought Ranger was brilliant last week?
    Brilliant? ❓ ❗
You not want to change that word?

  24. Dan I think we’ll get demolished with a line up like that. Barton the only true cm would leave the middle of the pitch were Chelski is strongest wide open. Not to mention we’d have a tough time holding any kind of possession. We wont win the possession battle anyway but that would certainly put us in for an absurd scoreline.

  25. dan4toon thats a good side actually ,plenty of attacking options and a bit of pace with Ranger and Lovenkrands .

  26. Reckon on Sunday we’ll see one of :

    Guti — Barton — Raylor — Ranger

    Loven/Fergie — Barton — Raylor — Guti

Although maybe we’ll see Tavernier or Campbell come into defence and Collo in MF again?

  27. Sorry to hear Stardy’s bus ha kaput – if there’s no replacement it’s clear that Ashely’s blocke the cap spend on a new one!

Re Routledge, according to Ed’s site a deal me be in place for him to go to QPR for Β£1.5m and if that is the case, there’s no way he’d be risked in the next couple of games. Or is there!

  28. Heh, if anyone wondered how bad injuries were, we could put out a team something like this, just using injured players:

    ——————Ben Arfa

    Gosling — Guthrie — Nolan — Guthrie

Perch — Kadar — Williamson — Lua Lua

With Smith on the bench. Fling Tiote in there if you’re including ‘suspensions’. Dunno about the state of Vuckic.

  29. I’m really fearing a heavy defeat on Sunday πŸ™

    I rekon our midfield will be;

    Jonas Barton Raylor Ranger

  30. It’s crazy to think how well stock we are at cm yet we only have one available now and he’s been at rm all year πŸ˜•

  31. Apparently the provisional squad looks like this:

Krul, Soderberg, Simpson, Ferguson, Enrique, Coloccini, S. Taylor, R. Taylor, Barton, Gutierrez, Vuckic, Tavernier, Richardson, Lovenkrands, Shola Ameobi, Ranger, Kuqi, LuaLua, McDermott, Donaldson, Sammy Ameobi.

Judging from that, I’d predict the starting line up to be:
    Simpson S.Taylor Coloccini Enrique
    R.Taylor Barton Vuckic(if fit)/ Donaldson Gutierrez
    Ameobi Lovenkrands
