Ex-star spotlight: Laurent Robert

Wor wizard on the wing!

Growing up, I remember going to St. James’ Park and the crowd being on their feet in anticipation every time Laurent Robert got the ball. He was one of those players who could create something out of nothing with his sweet left foot.

He would receive the ball to feet, control it effortlessly and have a glance towards the goal. The keeper would stiffen and focus instantly. He knows what Robert is capable of, as do the NUFC faithful. I would be screaming “SHOOT SHOOT” no matter where he had picked up the ball and would be disappointed when he laid it off to a fellow team mate.

Strange when I look back as he didn’t really score that many goals but there was always an aura that something special was going to happen!

We all know these type of players, the type who can get you on the edge of your seat by just simply taking possession of the ball. The match winners. The showmen. Laurent Robert was certainly one of these players and picked up the gauntlet set down by a certain Loreal loving David Ginola.

Robert was signed for a fee of 9.5 million. That sort of money can put a lot of pressure on a player but Laurent was a player who was in his prime, confident and playing in a very successful Champions League team in the form of Paris Saint Germaine.

Laurent will be remembered most for his specialist free kicks. He was a major threat from a set piece and this help him achieve a decent return of a goal every six games in his 3 season tenure with the club. Some of his strikes will forever live in our memories, especially the 2 against Spurs in a 4-0 win.

In his time with the club, Robert combined very well down the left hand side with his compatriot Olivier Bernard. Both players were quick, skillful and had an excellent cross. It’s very similar to the setup we have with Jonas and Enrique without the excellent crossing and goal return.

In the Frenchman’s first season, the Toon went on to finish 4th and gain Champions League football. We finished 3rd the season after with a decent Champions League run and 5th in Robert’s final year with the club. In hindsight, a pretty successful few seasons with the club, the like of which haven’t been seen since the late, great Sir Bobby Robson left us for that black and white striped dugout in the sky.

One thing we know about our fellow Europeans across the channel is that their passion and genius can sometimes spill over and be portrayed as sulking. When Souness came in, it really wasn’t going to work out and Robert’s time at the club, as well as the glory days, came to an end.

When we at NUFCBlog.co.uk asked Laurent Robert if he thought our new French attacker Hatem Ben Arfa could be an NUFC legend, he replied “yea he’s a really great player” – we think you could be right there mate!

  1. My laddie started to go to games around Robert’s time at the Toon and loved him.
Typical front player wouldn’t track back but boy did he come alive in the opposition half.
    Really enjoyed watching Robert

  3. On his day, he was unplayable. Wor Nobby on one wing, Robert on the other. Epic.

I hope Benny can be our next mercurial French legend!

Good read, he was a great player, watching some videos of him tonight on youtube I can’t believe some of the goals he scored especially his freekicks.

  5. Ah yes. The French genius. I’ll never forget him. Those long flowing locks and the shampoo adverts, cos I’m worth it!
They reckon Robert made more from those adverts than his time in pro football.
Couldn’t believe he went to Spuds, Everton and Villa after us.
    Pure class!

  6. Moreno-Seem to remember the same thing with Robert scoring a lot more, but even if he didn’t he scored some of the best. Beautiful football from him really, shame we don’t have another like him to take free kicks like that nowadays…oh wait, we have Ryan Taylor! 😀

  7. I’ve literally got up for a slash and had a brainwave. Sorry if this has been thought of, but I think krul will be the one to go ou on loan, and that’s to west ham if hoots gets the nod there. Green will be away so I can see krul, kadar, vuckic and ranger going there to help him and get a years education.

  8. Fantastic and frustrating in equal measure. Brilliant player on his day, unplayable, but my god he could be lazy tracking back. Mind you, it didn’t matter with goals and crosses like he kept putting in 😀

  12. What a difference a good set piece taker makes to the team. Don’t see many around in the Premier League nowadays for some reason.

Robert – he must have been good to still receive the adulation he gets, no ones got a bad word to say about him which is a rare thing!
