Krul's quit threat.
Tim Krul has issued an ultimatum to Newcastle by stating that either he becomes the No1 goalkeeper next season, or he's off!
To be honest I've been prepared for this for a while when it comes to our goalkeepers. We have Steve Harper as the senior figure with two very promising young goalkeepers waiting in the wings to take over the starting berth. You can only play one goalkeeper at a time so only one of those promising young goalkeepers is going to get the nod leaving the other playing second fiddle. Neither Tim Krul or Fraser Forster are going to want that.
Here is what Timmy boy told The Sun on the matter.
"I'm 23 and I want to play a whole season. That's what I'll tell manager Alan Pardew. Otherwise it makes no sense to stay."
It adds a little extra spice to what is already going to be an exciting tussle for the place in goal next season. Three players are going to battle it out to become the No1, and only one will secure the right to become our main goalkeeper.
Fraser Forster and Tim Krul will have no hardship finding other clubs if they don't prove themselves worthy of becoming our starting goalkeeper. Krul has admirers around Europe whilst Forster could quite easily make a permanent move back to Celtic where he spent last season on loan, or Norwich, or many other clubs I'm sure.
One thing I will say to Krul is that rather than making demands he should just get on with it instead of having a mild paddy if he doesn't get his own way. If he proves himself in pre-season he will get the nod like Alan Pardew has said, so perhaps he should just focus on that?
As I said earlier, I've been prepared for this for a while. Krul and Forster are at the age where they need to be playing first team games and two players into one position doesn't go when it comes to promising goalkeepers. Quite rightly they will want to be the number one somewhere as it is their career and they'll want to play rather than be sat on the bench.
I wish them all the best of luck to be honest - Harper, Krul and Forster. At the minute I would say that Krul is in the lead with regard to being the goalkeeper for next season but I guess things can change. I know Krul has made a few errors, but so does every goalkeeper in fairness and he is still learning so will get better. How do people expect a player to get better when they don't play?
Forster has done alright at Celtic, but to be honest I dare say that I could be a keeper for Celtic in the SPL such is the amount of work they have to do. The Old Firm could probably play without anyone in goal for each game aside from the games where they face each other!
We know what we'll get with Steve Harper. Solid but unspectacular. He'll also be trying to keep his shirt number throughout the pre-season campaign.
At least it makes a change from talking about Joey Barton!
