Will Pratley be our first signing?

Press prattle about Pratley.
In the last few days there have more rumours than I remember from the whole of last summer, and this is just another one of them.

That latest rumour being that Newcastle United have tied up a deal to bring Darren Pratley to the club on a free transfer. This deal would see the Swansea midfielder come to the club on a free transfer and he’d most likely be back up to the first team. Well I hope that’s what he’s seen as! The word is that we’ve offered him a four-year-deal on higher wages than Bolton to secure his signature.

He’s been a long term target for Bolton after he was linked with a £3 million switch to The Reebok last season which didn’t materialise, and it looks like we’ve possibly snatched him from under their nose. The main question mark around him is whether he can step up to Premier League level. He looks a class above in the Championship, but then again, so did Wayne Routledge.

I assume that many people will not have heard of Pratley, but from what I’ve seen of him, which is actually quite a bit, I’ve liked him. I think he will improve our squad overall and will be a more effective option than the likes of Alan Smith in midfield. Emphasis on the word squad though as I do not expect Pratley to be walking into the first team without an injury or two to several players ahead of him in the pecking order.

Pratley plays the more attacking role in a midfield and he is also familiar with playing off a lone striker which he has done at his current club Swansea City. So in terms of our squad he’s similar to Nolan in my opinion, but I think he has more of an engine than Nolan and would be a good option to possibly play away from home against the better teams as he is full of running.

Another positive about Pratley is his eye for goal. He scores around five goals a season and has done for the past couple of years. Some seasons have brought closer to ten goals so he would be another goal-scoring threat in our already strong midfield.

At the age of 26 Pratley is still in the age range that the current regime are after, and more importantly he’ll be affordable when it comes to wages which in my opinion makes signing him a no-brainer. The perfect scenario would be Smith leaving and Pratley being his replacement, as he would free up at least £40k wages per week which could be spent on drawing bigger players to the club, such as Kevin Gamiero.

With Swansea participating in the play-off final of Monday it is rumoured that he will sign sometime next week even if Swansea win that game. The chances are that Pratley will play a part in that game so it is a good opportunity for us on the blog and the scouts to get a final look at him before his possible transfer to the club.

Obviously I don’t expect you to take this as gospel, but I personally think that Darren Pratley may be the first through the door at St James’ Park.

  5. It’s a good video, shows his talent, I’ve been looking at the french sport websites and they all seem clear that he is coming to us after speaking to Ben Arfa and his club already have a replacement.

It’s interesting that he wears number 7 as well, I don’t think Joey would let him have that!

  9. Pavel, that basically says we have invited him over to see the club, and offered 12M euros, but the preference of the player is valencia who have only offered 7M and PSG who have matched our 12M.

  10. Gamiero doesn’t really want to come to us but I would like him to come and see the club. I really think that we are going to get Cabaye, he would be a great player to have in our team. French press are usually right, they first broke the news about Ben Arfa coming to us

“It was mine and BB’s opinion that Pardew believes he rates him for the first team…To give a 4 yr contract to a 26 yr old who is rated as one of the best ccc midfielders suggests he does.”…..congratulations to you for working that out, but that’s probably why Pardew wants to sign him ? 🙄
