Are you against the potential signing of Gameiro?

Not first choice? So what?
Of course it’s all rumour and hearsay at the moment, but apparently NUFC have had a bid accepted for Lorient striker, Kevin Gameiro.

Old news isn’t it? Well it’s a good job I don’t really want to focus on the merits of the bid although naturally I’ll have to touch on it a bit. Instead I want to focus on the attitude that some of our fans, rightly or wrongly, have towards the possible arrival of the 24-year-old French international.

I’ve read opinions from a fair number of fans now and I’m alarmed at some of the responses that this rumoured deal has solicited. Granted Gameiro has been making overtures to the likes of Valencia and Paris St Germain and would seemingly prefer a move to either of those clubs over us, but it shouldn’t mean that we should discount him completely.

Now I’m perfectly aware just why some Newcastle fans would be willing to pass up on the chance of bringing him to Newcastle. After all, we’ve had a fair few bad experiences concerning players who didn’t really want to be here (ahem Michael Owen), but it doesn’t mean that they are all like that. There is nothing to say that he won’t try his best whilst he is here.

We need a goalscorer, in fact I think we need more than one goalscorer, and Gameiro – whilst untested in the Premier League – scores goals, a fair few of them in fact, for a struggling team in the shape of Lorient. Why pass it up just because he may have designs on playing his football somewhere else? When I was a kid I had designs on being a racing car driver, but instead I’ve had to settle for driving something a little less nippy 😉

Gameiro, or any signing that has their eyes set on bigger things, would do exactly the same in my opinion – settle.

At the end of the day, the very French sounding Kevin has a choice – he can sign with us or he can stay at Lorient. No other team has matched what we have offered yet, and with his preferred destination of Valencia stuck for cash it’s unlikely that they will be able to match and PSG may well have their eyes set on bigger fish with all that new found Qatari wealth at their disposal.

In short it’s kind of irrelevant. Gameiro, or anyone, must want to come here in the first place if they agree a deal surely? That is the nuts of it from where I’m standing. Nobody would force him to move anywhere he didn’t really want to so if he was to sign then surely he would be fine with being here. Just because he isn’t jumping through hoops it doesn’t mean that he, or anyone, wouldn’t settle and do the job here.

Of course all of this speculation is mind-numbing, and there is nothing to suggest that anyone is actually going to sign on yet. They will do though, in time, but just because they may have originally had their eyes set on bigger things it doesn’t mean that they automatically won’t perform for us.

Personally I think Gameiro, as an example, would come here and get his head down. He is a goalscorer and if he starts scoring he’ll soon learn to love life at Newcastle. He wouldn’t be the first Frenchman to become smitten with Tyneside after experiencing it at first hand would he?

So am I against signing players who may have their eyes on bigger clubs? Nope, not really. The question is; are you?

  1. if he does not want to join newcastle its pure simple,DO NOT SIGN HIM,we really dont need another player just here for the wages and then off at the first chance,But can you blame him, even if there was the slightest chance i could go to valencia over newcastle i know where i would go,where the sun shines…and im from newcastle

  2. Big Al wanted to come to us, that was no secret, but i am sure that he would have done really well if Manure had managed to get him anyway… Better to have players that can actually feels towards a certain club, than those who are driven by money entirely, and as he seems such a player i am sure he will fall in love with the toon soon after he gets here

  3. I really don’t want him if he doesnt want to be here! But I also fear if we miss him we will turn to bring Shane Long, Graham as our main strike force. We have enough of Long, Graham type of players in Best, Ameobi…. Hope we aim lil bit higher in quality!

  4. i am against players with no interest playing for the club to come in.

But i am fine with players using the club as a stepping stone for greater deals later.

  5. Think Valle has hit the nail on the head really. We may not be his first choice but I do reckon he would soon change his mind if he ever rocked up at Newcastle. He’d soon love it 🙂

  6. I’d feel digusted if we signed Gamiero! Nah, not really. Sign him up! But i reckon this is an irrelevance ‘cos i just can’t see it happening. Plus we’d probably want a target man too. Love to be pleasantly surprised though!

  7. I’d sign him no probs. If he wants a bigger club and has to use us as a stepping stone then so be it. To get a ‘Bigger’ club he has to be performing every week which is good for us. And if his goals help us to get European football then who knows. I think he would soon change his mind about us after walking out that tunnel in front of 50000+ singing geordies 🙂

  8. Basically, Beggars can’t be choosers. I’m sure we’d all like Alan Shearer mark II, or for Messi to turn around and say he’s loved Newcastle since childhood and will therefore force a move. Unfortunately we have to be realistic, at the end of the day we need a professional on our payroll, and Gameiro shows all the signs of being a true professional.

  9. Don’t really fancy Gameiro. Too lightweight and lacks the physicality. A little annoyed that he’s trying to start a bidding war by engineering a move to PSG and Valencia.

Really hope we consider Felipe Caicedo. should cost around 3-4 mill.
Speaking of…. we missed out on Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who recently signed for Sporting Lisbon for 6 mill euros. What a deal!

  11. I’m with you toonsy mate. He hasn’t came out and said he doesn’t want to come here. Just that he’d prefer Valencia, with CL football, which is the right thing for a footballer to aspire to, surely?

Some of the comments on here made me laugh. Remember, Andy Carrolls dream was to play at SJP… Look how that turned out.

  12. If the choice had been between a mid table team and a champions league team for the vast majority of the players we’ve signed in the past, present or will sign in the future does anybody honestly believe we’d have been/will be the first option?
No we wouldn’t,people keep mentioning the past big money flops, they were flops because the majority simply weren’t good enough, if they do their best whilst here thats good enough for me.

      (Quote)

  13. Yep. It would be nice if we had a team full of brilliant players whose only burning desire was to play for Newcastle and spend their whole career here… oh wait we had one of those last season and he fecked off at the first opportunity.

It kills me how some people slag this guy off for having aspirations towards a big club… probably the same ones who’ve been saying nasty things about Jose ever since the first rumours of his leaving…. but if he decides to sign I wonder he will suddenly be a great guy again…

Eff this player, eff that player, he doesn’t love us, we don’t want him… childish really? We’re talking about a player, not a boyfriend/girlfriend! A professional will do his best. They aren’t all Owens.

  14. Susan I agree with you especially regarding Carroll.Newcastle can ill afford to be to fussy ,if we manage to sign Gamerio it would improve the side hell of a lot ,disregarding the fact whether we where his first choice or not.

  15. Funny how none of the Gameiro doubters have commented yet? They were in full force a couple of days back?

Just seems like a defence mechanism to me. When people think they are going to lose out, they turn on the target to justify it to themselves. Carroll is a classic example, he has the potential to be one of England’s greatest ever strikers but when he left he was **** and hadn’t scored that many in the championship. The makems the other day were saying Henderson was below average as he was set to leave them. There are loads of examples. Joey was player of the season and no one could say a bad word about him, then all of a sudden we see comments saying that we don’t need him anyway etc when it looks like he could go.

    Happens all the time.

I can’t see any sensible toon fan being unhappy with bringing in a player like Gameiro, when you look at our current striking options he seems to be a class above.

  16. Lets be honest, what footballer wouldn’t want to play for a team in the CL? They’d be slaughtered for lacking ambition if they didn’t. But the fact remains that not all players can play in the CL and if they can’t they have to find other clubs to play for and prove themselves for the next step up, hopefully with a team like us.

If nobody matches our bid he will play here, unfortunately I think someone will match our bid but that’s life.

Every player we go for will probably have a preference of where they want to play, we may even be some players preference, but that may not always happen so they go somewhere else and prove their a good player.

Anyone who doesn’t want Gameiro are just being ridiculously idealistic and unreasonable.

  17. He probably knows very little about the club and hr is yet to experience walking out at sj james park.

Carroll was supposedly the perfect nufc player and look what happened. He has abit of quality so would love him here

  18. Dont want a player that dont want to pay for us. If he comes here and play **** in his first games, everyone will hates him. Even if i score goas I think many will set a question ahead of him, we cant buy payers that says they dont want to play for us. We should go for Gervinho (RW) Demba Ba (S) and Nzogbia (LW), that woud be a fantastic transfer window, we already have Cabaye:D

      (Quote)

  19. I’m more bothered about Gervinho than Gamiero to be honest. We need to rethink the striker situation. Rondon perhaps?

      (Quote)

  20. Kristoffer – Do you not think that Gervinho, Ba and Nzogbia want to play CL football? Obviously they do, so their preference would be to play at another club than NUFC. Should we not try for them then?

      (Quote)

  21. I really think that football is very emotional and there’s a ‘spurned lover’ feel to it all, like our self-respect is somehow involved if we’re not first choice… like Moreno says, it’s a defense mechanism.

For me, a player doesn’t have to declare his love or pursue us doggedly in order to get a chance.. this is football 😆 😆 😆

  22. Hi – new to this blog.
Agree with most of the comments and the article. All he has said is what his prefernce is for – we all have dreams, choices and preferences but a lot of the time we come to a sensible compromise and make the best of it. There is a world of difference between saying “I would prefer X” to saying “I only want X and I’m not interested in Y”.

  25. Good read Toonsy, I agree with rossrich’s comment 7. He’d definitely develop a passion for the toon soon enough!

I love his playing style. Our team weren’t nicknamed The Entertainers for nothing. Traditionally we are a team that is all about the passion for the club and style that we play in, regardless of whether we win any silverware. And that’s what being a geordie and a Newcastle supporter is about guys.

We need a top class striker, fast. And I think this Keveeen Gameiro can offer us that je ne sais quoi that we are lacking lately!

    Sign him up Uncle Pards!!

  26. On the same lines, I wonder how many of those slagging off Gameiro are at the same time hoping we’ll re-sign N’zogbia – a player who talked endlessly while he was here about leaving for a bigger club, who eventually settled for Wigan and who’s now (apparently) tweeting positive noises about the Toon? I would be more wary of him – but would be pleased if we did sign him and would give him the chance to show that he has matured as a person as well as a player.

He scored 13 goals in 22 starts for a pretty weak Levante side. ya he’s got the right body build, above avg pace and he’s really physical on the ball.

In fact if you read what Liverpool fans are saying they suffer from the “messiah” syndrome at the moment…bit like us with KK at times…..Kenny has returned to save them from mediocracy and bring back the good old days….but flippin heck Rafa and co hoyed some money around over the years, and they’re gonna do it again…spend big…
