Is there really any rush for Nolan’s new deal?

Nolan says no to NUFC contract.
It’s been said that Kevin Nolan’s representatives have rejected a proposed new contract from Newcastle as the terms on offer fell short of what the player would expect.

The details of the deal on offer are not available to the public, obviously, but it’s pretty obvious what has gone on. An improvement may be offered, or an improvement may not be offered. Who knows? I’m willing to bet two things though with the first one being that this is the club playing hardball, again, with the other being that this news will bet met with howls of derision from some fans.

I’ve noticed that the reported cooling of a new deal for Nolan has attracted the attention of a certain section of the fans who now suggest that failing to keep hold of him over the summer would represent a failure on the part of the club. I mean didn’t it start out as just keeping hold of our players who are entering the last year of their deals, like Joey Barton and Jose Enrique? So where has Nolan come into all this?

The fact is that their is no rush to offer Nolan a new contract. He still has over two years to run on his current deal so there is plenty of time for things to change. It’s not of paramount importance.

Yes Nolan is our Captain and he is no doubt a very influential player when it comes to the dressing room, but he is hardly a world beater is he? I mean don’t get me wrong, he has scored some important goals for us and those four goals this season against the Mackems will ensure that he has a place in the heart of the Newcastle faithful for some time to come, but he is not irreplaceable. Far from it in fact.

Kevin Nolan will be 31 by the time his contract expires. Given the fact that he is hardly the most mobile player as it is it’s unlikely that will have improved on his speed a couple of years down the line. People say that the games can pass him by now and that sometimes he can be a complete passenger on the pitch, so imagine what it will be like in 2013?

Is it a bad thing that the club are being careful not to tie someone, who may or may not be a spent force in 2013, up at this very moment? I don’t think there is anything wrong with that as such, but there needs to be a delicate balancing act from now on.

First Joey Barton and now Kevin Nolan – two influential players, who have both not managed to resolve their respective contract issues? Could this be the end of player power at St James’ Park? Both Nolan and Barton have had their say on team matters under Chris Hughton and perhaps Alan Pardew works differently? Who knows?

Makes you think though doesn’t it?

  1. For all the banter regarding Nolan not being offered a new contract theres a few links via newsnow suggesting he’s rejected a deal…or is that old news?

  4. we might just need nolan and joey,if these new signing come off,as we would lose them for african cup for a month with travel, plus any injurys they may pick up 😕

  5. not worried about nolan contract to be onest , more worried j barton tho would like to see both stay

  6. No rush for Nolan- if he only had 1-year left on his deal that would be a different story. I saw let him play this year and make a decision on a new deal after the season.

the progression of vuckic could come into play as well….

  7. @Pavel

The Northern Echo also claims Neil Taylor is to be a direct replacement for Enrique!

I can’t wait til the press conference and the unveiling of Gervinho standing alongside Neil Taylor!

Gervinho will feel intimidated being in such company! 😆

      (Quote)

  8. Nolan still has 2 years on his contract and should wait until next year before negotiating.

It looks like Nolan, Jose and Barton are sticking together as predicted.

      (Quote)

  9. Toonsy as you said there is no rush as he’s 2yrs left, and he is allready as fast as a mobility scooter, in 2yrs time he will be like a snail. Get shot I say 😆
I see you havn’t been banned by Worky then 😉

  10. Just realised that Thursday, the day when the international transfers can start is also the 9th of June, 149 years to the day since the Blaydon Races!

Could be a lucky day for us geordies! 😉

  11. Bobby @ 8 – I heard one rumour saying it was going to be Cabaye, Gervinho and Taylor.

    I don’t think he’d get asked much 😆

  12. It’s all scaremongering!! Yes getting our players tied up is important but isn’t getting more players in our priority?? At least the rumours aint – Enrique seen at Liverpool etc

      (Quote)

  13. Nolan doesn’t deserve a new contract as toonsy says he’ll be 31 and way too slow by then. Personally I would sell him this summer or at the latest next.

As for gervinho – I just cannot see him signing or Gamiero. These players are just out of our league imo.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see a net spend of circa £10m this summer with a couple of key players leaving too.

Before anyone jumps down my throuat, my expectations are based on the form. I hope to be proved wrong.

  14. I tell you what mind, if Barton and Nolan go, I’m gonna be genuinely concerned about that lack of English players in our 1st team… We’re gonna start being mistaken for looking like Chelsea in cheap West Brom shirts!

Hope Uncle Pards speaks Les Francais! 😆

  15. Latest on twitter is Gervinho has rejected us and is going to Arsenal. I just want him to sign for someone, not even bothered about who it is now like.

      (Quote)

  16. Also, Nolan loves it here, he’s one of our stand out performers this season. For those reasons I would give him a new deal.

However, he’s not getting any younger and is probably wanting a pay rise. I think I would still give him a new deal.

      (Quote)

  17. It would be a shame imo if Gervinho went to le ****. Their fans really don’t seem bothered about him. We however are positively jizzing in our pants at the prospect of signing him.

Your choice. Squad player or important first team player with the fans already on your side?

Of course that’s taking money out of the equation.

      (Quote)

  18. With NUFC and transfers expect nothing… That way you will never be disappointed when inevitably we don’t sign anyone good!

      (Quote)

  19. Could be interesting … cabaye maybe announced. wonder what the odds are for gervinho aswell?

as for nolan the lad loves the club plays for the shirt and is our captain. he should stay and i think he realises that even though hes a good player its likely he may not be a starter depending on who we buy this summer. But what a player to have as back up and inspiration in dressing room!

      (Quote)

  20. Michael Richardson and Ryan Donaldson have both been offered contract extensions at Newcastle United with their current deals due to expire this summer.

Odd we announced we’ve offered deals and not that they’ve signed them….

      (Quote)

  21. I think this is all about age. The days when players expect clubs to pay their pensions are gone, and Barton and Nolan are both right in that bracket where a long contract will take them well past their sell-by date. With the situation over the likes of Smith and his salary, you can’t blame the club for refusing to pay huge salaries to players well into their thirties.

Jose is different – that’s a straight-forward career, glory and money thing.

I want Barton and Nolan to stay, but they have to be realistic about the will of a club which is building a reputation for getting serious young talent in through the door to pay out more money for older players.

      (Quote)

  22. its because they are cheap and less hassle than the likes of nolan and barton.

    any news on enrique?

  23. @ 31 – blimey; they’re not messing about are they? Good – gives the kids a chance to find their next move during the window. I feel sorry for ’em and wish ’em all the best, mind.

  24. So that’s Ferguson, Richardson and Donaldson tied down.

Not so keen on Donaldson but glad that the first two are!

      (Quote)

  25. Right I’ll catch you in a bit lads. Off for a drive in and around London so anything that gets deleted from this point onwards until tomorrow morning has zip to do with me ok 😆

“Gervinho will feel intimidated being in such company!”

    😆

    Re: thread.
From Nolan’s point of view, he must hear these figures/rumours of 60k per week being battered around for new players.

If he isn’t being offered the same, when he has bust his **** for the club as captain, then he has a right to feel aggrieved.

      (Quote)

  27. I think nolan will get an extension, like the post says he will be 31 when his contract is up, there is no rush on him yet but I can understand if he wont accept it, he obviously will want a longer more secure deal but that is not the policy ashley wants, he wants players who have a sell on value.

Its a shame because nolan is our captain and would send out a good message if he signs, but theres no rush yet.

      (Quote)

  28. They need to get the balance right. Yes, there’s clearly better value on paper with a Benny or a Gervinho, but you can’t operate a team without the Nolans and Bartons of this world. A bit of give from both sides is needed.

      (Quote)

  29. Whumpie- completely agree.

The right mx of flair and guts is what’s needed. Gervinho, Benny, Cabaye PLUS Barton and Nolan would be ideal. I hope Pards understands that

      (Quote)

  30. By the way, my hope is that after this intial flurry is done and we hopefully have a couple in, the club will take a look at what money is left and hopefully do the right thing with Barton.

      (Quote)

  31. MDS – but that only works if Barton understands the realities of being a player approaching 30, who has younger, cheaper alternatives snapping at his heels. Pay the man, by all means – but I don’t think he should expect that to continue well into his 30s. Especially given his record, which cannot be brushed aside based on one season’s good play and relatively good behaviour.

      (Quote)

  32. The days of long contracts for older players are gone – even Scholes and Giggs were getting a year at a time extensions.

Though those two knew if they were playing well they’d get an extension.

Those desperate for longer contracts late in their careers are self motivated not team motivated – the older players are going to have to get used to this – it’ll become more common place

      (Quote)

  33. What did “Par Dieu “say about the club not taking the easy option and being satisfied with a 12th to 15th place?
This means that they would try to recruit & keep players who would not be out of place in top 6 side.
Nolan is a great bloke & good captain but doesn’t fit the bill now never mind in 2 years time.

Barton maybe could, but he has burnt too many bridges with the top management after the club backed him (maybe with little choice of doing otherwise) when he was paid and kept on despite his appalling antics off and on the field when he was paid to do nothing. Excellent last season but he still owes the club.

They’ve tried to keep Enrique who is definitely good enough. Tioté & collo definietly good enough. Jury out on Staylor & Willo
Let’s hope Gosling is a good RB too as Simmo is certainly the weak link today.

Ben Arfa & Cabaye probably have a good chance of succeeding.

I don’t believe we’ll get Gameiro & would prefer Sturridge although if Carroll is worth 35m & is as crocked as Woodgate was, we don’t have enough for him…

As for Gervinho, while I can think of excellent reasons why he could come (Cabaye, Tioté, Ben Arfa, potential of that team & guaranteed starting spot, I just think he wants a “bigger” club with a potentailly faster route to Europe. Hope I’m wrong as Sturrige Ben Arfa & Gervinho could wreak a bit of havoc.

We’ll see on Thursday when transfer window opens. I bet there’s nothing until then to put us out of our misery one way or the other

      (Quote)

  34. Agree, Stardust. That’s our money they’re using for player pensions, and it’s right that everyone should start to get a bit more realistic. It doesn’t mean the older players can’t expect to be playing to 38 (or whatever Giggs is now) but it does mean they’ll have to keep delivering the goods if they want to take the money and stay at the club.

      (Quote)

  35. “if Carroll is worth 35m & is as crocked as Woodgate was”

    He wasn’t worth £35m… unless you’re a desperate bindipper.

I strongly suspect that AC is very, very pissed off about his decision in January; I’d be surprised if he isn’t the next one over there to ‘do a Torres’. 17 appearences; scored in one of ’em.

    Ouch. 😆

      (Quote)

  36. as i’v eposted before on barton, a new 2-year deal would be ideal (this year and the next). I’d be leery of going to 3 years but would probably do it if the price were right.

If he wants 4-years on big wages then no thank you.

      (Quote)

  37. Agree entirely, MDS. Alas, that leech McKay will have convinced Barton that anything less than a 4-year deal is akin to calling his mother a badger-shagging witch, and generally kicking up as much bad feeling as possible.

    Da wee ****. 👿

Barton should stub a cigar out in his eye, beat him unconcsious and leave him outside a McDonalds in Liverpool. 😈

      (Quote)

  38. No, he’ll be too old when this one runs out, hardly going to get more mobile is he? 😆

      (Quote)

  39. Quite worrying for me to see so many posters on here quickly falling in along side Lambias and co and dismissing Barton, Nolan and Enrique and co as money grabbers without knowing the full facts.
What is a fact is that these players were instrumental in bringing this club back to where it is, yes they have been well paid but so is the rest of the premier league, pay peanuts and you know what we are going to end up with.
Tying Ranger down to a 5yr deal then flogging him months later is proof that the long term deals are only to increase the asking price, forget all the gangster *****, its all about profit.
If this trio of players leave and top notch replacements arent bought, ladies and gents, we are in deep ****!

      (Quote)

  40. Agreed bobby – no problem with paying Barton and Nolan top dollar – we do already, and then some! We’ve paid Barton whatever daft amount per week even when in jail.

It’s about duration, that’s all. I don’t mind paying Barton £60k a week to do what he did last season, but I’m buggered if I’m going to assume he’ll be doing just as well in 4 years time and sign up to pay him the same then.

I don’t think anyone wants these guys to go; we’re just keen that they should stay on a deal that’s fair, and some of the quotes – certainly on the Barton thing – suggest that they’re after something that’s unfairly tilted in their favour.

      (Quote)

  41. For what it’s worth, “Tying Ranger down to a 5yr deal then flogging him months later” sounds like a damned good bit of business to me. He’s a ****.

      (Quote)

  42. I dont think anyone wants Enrique gone? And I dont think anyone wants barton and nolan to go this season, just hopefully next summer, I would hope we will be bringing in better players?

As for Nolan I think he has one more good year left in him at top level.. Joey maybe two?

And Ranger has blew his chance. If you turned up late for work every week and posed with guns, whether it was real or not, he is a role model to kids, how long do you think you would last in your job?

      (Quote)

  43. “If this trio of players leave and top notch replacements arent bought, ladies and gents, we are in deep ****!”

To be honest, I think we’d still be in the brown even if we get good replacements. We need leadership, continuity and Brits, not a load of wide-eyed young, foreign offcomers who are all expecting the rest of the team to show them the ropes. The old guard have a value way beyond their playing abilities.

  46. Bobby you cant just dismiss all the gangster stuff when it comes to Ranger , Ranger has been in trouble most of his life and has spent time in some sort of youth offenders facility. Maybe the club have said enough is enough? How stupid can someone be posing with a gun like he did? Fake or not? There is also all the reports of him been late for training so why should the club invest time and money into someone who appears not learn from his mistakes?

  52. We have been promised so much by this regime but yet have been short changed badly, one step forward and then two back.
We were told in the last window that 4 players were needed and were coming in, instead we got Kuqi and Ireland and sold our best player Carroll and loaned out Routledge.
The evidence is there in every window, we will bring some players in but more will go out and we will have barely enough to get by with so i cant go along with all the optomism and also will not criticise any of our better performers until the full facts are known.
Our club will be run like Sports Direct and anyone who believes otherwise needs to go and have a word with the fairies at the bottom of the garden.
If you are a supporter who is happy to watch Lovenkrands and Ameobi toiling away with Alan Smith pulling the strings and Neil Taylor replacing Enrique, then you are a better more tolerant man than me, i take my hat off to you and good luck, i wont be there to watch them.
