Gervinho is coming to England, but where will he end up?

Gervinho? Gameiro? God knows....

Gervinho? Gameiro? God knows....
Don't be surprised if Gervinho turns us down.
The imminent transfer of Gervinho has become a hot topic amongst fans of many clubs including ourselves, Arsenal and Manchester City with probably more clubs talking about it in the background.

On the surface of it, if you believe any of the madness and speculation that is going around at the moment, it is those aforementioned three clubs that are at the forefront of the race to secure the Ligue 1 winner, but the question is just where will he end up? And do Newcastle really have a chance of landing the Ivory Coast international?

I don’t think it’s wrong to say that Manchester City and Arsenal are operating in a bracket that is above us at the minute. One day we may get back up there, one day, but being realistic it’s going to take a lot of time and patience with a huge slice of fortune squeezed in for good measure.

Could we really beat the likes of those two to a signing? Well it obviously depends on the player himself first and foremost. If Europe is a deciding factor for then then, no, we won’t beat the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal to a signing.

However there are reasons why we could still have a chance of landing some heavily sought after players. I mean we pulled off a coup when we signed Hatem Ben Arfa for a starter plus we apparently have a good reputation in France, which is a start, and has apparently helped us to the verge of signing Yohan Cabaye. They aren’t the only reasons why we could trump two of the big four though.

First off you have to take a look at where Gervinho will fit in at the other clubs. Is he really good enough to oust some of their players at the moment? His reputation would suggest so, but nobody really knows. With the pressure of being in the top four being so great perhaps it would put them off making a move for someone who is untried and untested in the Premier League.

We could offer a starting role in the team from day one. There is little doubt that he would improve our team and he would have very little competition to face with regard to a starting place. He could play in front of 50,000 fans every other week with his mates Cheik Tiote and Yohan Cabaye, and he would more than likely be adored for doing so.

Clutching at straws? Maybe. The players agent however is not giving the game away and is remaining steadfastly non-committal on the future of his client.

“Nothing is finalised on Gervinho’s future,” Pascal Boisseau told The Journal. “Gervinho will make his decision either by the end of the week or very early next week. He has many options and there has been a lot of interest in him.”

“For the moment, we’re not in a position to say anything about where he will go. I can’t say anything about Newcastle – we have a good relationship with them and other clubs. The matter is confidential and it is impossible to confirm where he will be going.”

It’s nice to hear that they have a good relationship with Newcastle – it could help when it comes to party invitations or borrowing some sugar at some point in the future. It doesn’t mean he will end up with us though. Equally there is nothing to say that he won’t end up with us.

So in summary, I do hold out some slim hope that Gervinho will end up with us, although the words ‘slim’ and ‘hope’ are particularly pertinent. Being realistic it’s unlikely that the player will turn down the chance to be challenging for honours at a Champions League club so we’ll more than likely miss out and I feel that waiting until the end of this week/start of next week is just dragging out any lingering hopes.

At least we tried though, which is more than I expected us to do. Of course we don’t know how hard we really tried but at least there was some flicker of intent for a brief moment. It could still happen but I’m prepared for it not to take place.

Now we should move onto perhaps more realistic targets.

  1. What we need to do is show some ambition in the transfer market, if people see the likes of N’Zogbia, Cabaye and Gervino coming to us. Then in turn it will attract more players and hopefully bolster our reputation and make us a more attractive club to play for.

  2. I really hope that this lad will see this as an opportunity to play for a fantastic club with fans who will sing his name louder than any other club in England and furthermore as an opportunity to become a legend by helping Newcastle get back to Europe. I hope this lad has the vision to see that his future here could be the stuff footballers’ dreams are made of.

  3. Tweet from Tiote ‘I’ve tried my best’ so either he’s tried and not coming or he’s done his best and wait and see

  4. I don’t think tiote has a twatter account – must be fake. My heart hopes he comes here, but on the other hand my brain says he will go to arsenal, especially if barca do get fabregas.

Has there been an official bid from arsenal or man city, i’ve not heard or seen any reports.

  5. Don’t see how gervy could ever go to City, i’d put money on him not going there. They have better, and they’d only want much better. Arsenal? Well, if they’re in for Benzema and they get him they won’t be wanting gervy will they? Otherwise though i guess there is a chance of him going there..even though he wouldn’t be a starter.

  6. I don’t think City will be after him with them just qualifying for the Champions League. They’ll be looking at higher quality players in my opinion.

  7. Batty-

Yeah it’s me. Dunno what happened to my avatar… I’ll go change it real quick. About time for a new one anyway!

That interview is mint. “Small and wet” HAHA!!

In all fairness though… is Newcastle that much more dry? 😉

  9. O’H – drier here but maybe colder. But we have more than 2 restaurants aswell 😆 😆

S if Tevez wont go back to manc ali shitty (and who could blame him) its no wonder the arab bastads are after poaching our targets.

  14. for once i will be positive and say that he will come to us. why? cos tiote is his big mate and if he is anything like tiote he will have some heart and pride.. tiote could have went to Chelski in January as they came in for him but he said no and signed on with us again. If this dude is the same mould…. we have a chance. We can offer his everything other than euro footy. our fans are world famous and need no introduction. it wasnt light years ago we were a regular force in europe and he will know this…with several like him we have a chance of heading in the right direction once more.
Arsenal are in about as much dissary as us with many of their key guys ar5sed off etc with contract delays and vailed threats of bogging off. They are fading fast now and city have taken their place.. i see ar5e having a real battle even getting as high as 5th next season. so that leaves city.. then we have gone to other extreame… gervinhio will be bench warmer there. if that is what he wants then we can consider it a lucky escape.

  16. Dont dare to believe tho Craig, not until he is in the “famous Black & White”
The Toon will be buzzing if we pull this one off.
    Hmmm ❗

  17. Craig…hope you’re right but I think once the “big boys” move on any player we’re interested in then I think we’re fecked…..but wait and see, stranger things have happened, maybe fat Ash will surprise me this summer. 😉

  18. I’m shocked Craig ,whatever you are on must have cost a fortune ,but you have made me feel happier and more 😀 confident

  19. Gervinho has two options.
Stay at Lille or come to Newcastle.

None of the other clubs have had a bid accepted.

So if he’s definitely coming to England, then he’ll look good in b&w.

  20. So are Tiote and Geronimo best mates like, or just fellow countrymen?

  21. How do we know who is real and who is fake on twitter? I know a photo’s can be picked up from anywhere, but who do you rely on?

To be honest, don’t really trust anybody on there apart from Jobey of course.

  22. hey BB… i am having a rare positive one today as today is ….. the day my decree absolute came through!! today is a great day man. not even fatty and dekka can get me down! i think we will land the gerbil fella and this will keep jose happy and he wil sign on.. dreaming…problably. I am now working on the law of averages… surley we cant have a **** window every time and never get our targets? its high time we landed our man for a change. i am sick of hearing all these names every window and its always a let down… this time ashley knows he needs to get the season tickets back and there is only one way of doing that. our attendences are still well down and he knows it.

  23. -Richie that’s liverpool mate!

Surely tevz is just after another 200k a week added on to what he’s earning? Why would he quit after getting champs league?…Well unless another massive spanish/italian team came in for him…as if he’d go to argentina

      (Quote)

  24. Geoff that’s my take as well. There has been no other chatter about a bid being accepted other than ours.

CC- you are right re: Arsenal IMO. They are on the verge of being a 5-6 club with ManCity and LPool on the rise.

      (Quote)

  25. mick G.. yep it did cost a fortune… have you nay idea how much an ex wife gets these days man when she drags your ar5e through court?? but hey… worth every penny.

      (Quote)

  26. MDS.. clubs higher than ar5e next season… man utd, man city, chelsea, liverpool and prob spurs. that brings then in in 6th in league. even if they get higher than spurs they will only hit 5th. and they lost money this year without even hardly spending so i wonder just how much they will shell out now? even walcott making funky noises etc and he is just out of nappies man .

      (Quote)

  27. simon..jobey’s the fecker you can trust the least 😆

Newkie…I think we both know there are no fair maidens in Liverpool 😉

The steal your wallet like? Sure you’re not confusing the Toon with Scouserland?

I always thought the Toon was like the land of milk and honey where all the women were beautiful and had huge round breasts that never sagged. A land where venerial disease had been eradicated. A land where the beer flows like water and there’s plenty of everything to be had for all. Clearly there’s no need for theft. Not even in the Bigg Market… 😉

    Geoff77,

Didn’t kna that Lille had accepted a bid for Gervinho. I thought only Lorient had accepted a bid from us, and that for Kevin Gameiro…

      (Quote)

  29. Newkie, Tevez isn’t motivated by money at the moment. He is so rich already it doesn’t matter. What is more important to him now is his family and quality of life. He has had it with football now, and would just like to play for his local club back in Argentina, and be with his family more. Good luck to him, but I cant see manc just letting him go that easy.

  30. Jay….would have thought so mate, don’t know for sure. Ping them an email.

LoL, nah mate, I’ve done so much reading on the Toon it ain’t even funny. I expect it to be smaller and cleaner than London, with several bad parts of town just like any other major city, I expect some of the people to be very blue collar working class folk who enjoy a good bit of craic and a pint of the broon stuff, and I expect the lasses to have amazing (yet slightly unintelligible) accents. Closer to the truth like? 😆

      (Quote)

  32. Not too bad mate, just hoping for a decent transfer window, getting JB and Jose signed up would do for starters like 🙁
How’s you, any closer to moving North?

  33. Well done Craig 🙂

Now if you don’t mind I’ll have to delete your comments…… 😉

  35. …Sorry, but I just don’t care and I’m going to be honest, I never have. This guy’s abilities are not worthy of the hype he is getting as far as I am concerned. I would rather we got N’Zogbia.

  37. Some of yous never learn do you? Battered wife syndrome its called. Forever optimistic that the brutal husband, in this case NUFC, will change their ways and in this case, pay that bit more in wages, which we will need to do to sign Gervinho.

I will give you counselling when the enevitable happens and we don’t get him. 😛

Heads out the sand boys please. 🙄

  38. a little birdy whispered me that aparently Toon is looking to get Marc Janko from Twente. What do you guys make of that?

  39. Richie-

Oh yeah! Moved to Espagna with that pretty little senorita. Completely forgot for a second there 😉

Ok, when I come to Spain, you’ll take me around and get me hammered, then haha! I speak a bit of Spanish, but much much much more French. Maybe I need to send Gameiro a personal message..

      (Quote)

  40. Riche-you’re right about the fair maidens…Torres left in January didn’t he? 🙁

      (Quote)

  41. Bobby,

We may not get Gervinho, but we’ll get some quality signings and improve the squad. I have faith. N’Zogbia would be just as good IMO. And I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see us land Gervinho AND Gameiro still. The whole Gameiro business just screams of how we’re doing business lately. I’ll eat my words if I’m wrong, but I really think we’ll see KG in black n white. Gervinho… idk, but I’m optimistic.

      (Quote)

  42. BB-I’m not so sure about that, that’s how he’s coming across, but he’d said that back in Jan and it seemed he was angling more for a better contract. Though if he does want to leave and does go back to play in Argie for his family then fair play to him, a much better man than most. Thing is, he’s loaded, but which footballers aren’t? And which of them wouldn’t want more money? I’m not convinced by him to be honest.

      (Quote)

  43. I always avoid speculation and normally don’t join in as it means nothing.

For me I now believe we have got him, he speaks about us positively BUT tellingly states he can not talk about it as its “confidential”.

The two being uttered together, I believe this is evidence (as we insist on confidentiality) that we are in detailed talks with him

Let’s hope they get it over the line.
