Proud to be a Geordie – The Blaydon Races!

Graham Danby giving us his Blaydon Races against Sunderland.
As most of you are probably aware tomorrow is June 9th and that means that historically it’s day of The Blaydon races.

However most of you are probably unaware that it will be the 149th anniversary since “Twas on the ninth of June, Eighteen Hundred and Sixty Two on a summers afternoon”. The Blaydon Races are famous throughout Britain, not only because of the event but because of the Geordie anthem which spawned alongside it.

Next year will be the 150th Anniversary of the Geordie tradition and rightly so, plans are already underway to make it as memorable as possible. The Blaydon Races are part of Geordie heritage and it is only right that a fitting celebration is underway to commemorate it.

Having recently met with the local councils, the organisers have already made great strides, and although no official arrangements were made the overall feelings were positive. Regular contact will continue to be made with officials until something comes into place, but this is where you, the proud Geordies and fans of Newcastle United come in.

So what can you do to help get the campaign off the ground?

Firstly you can find the details on where you can sign a petition which will be heading towards the councils and parliament.

Also all you twitter (@BlaydonRaces150) and Facebook users can follow the campaign there and get all the latest updates and help by contributing any ideas that you may have.

And last of all just spread the word. Let everyone know that 2012 will not only be the year of the Olympics and The Jubilee, but the year of Geordie pride and celebration. Other cities have their festivals so why not have our own? Why can’t we have 250,000 people on the streets of Tyneside next year?

Hopefully this campaign will be a great success and I for one can say I’m fully behind it.
