Quality or quantity?

More of these two please!
As per usual with our beloved football club, rumours are ten to the dozen as the “silly season” starts to gather momentum.

Players ranging from the “who the hell is he?” to joint golden boot winners all being linked with moves as Newcastle United look forward to another season in the English top flight. A lot of the rumours mentioned in the papers, as always, appear to have no substance to them and our opinions vary with each player linked. Some of us deem them to be not good enough, or in some cases, too good, for a move to our club. So what is realistic this time round?

Last summer I was impressed with the shrewd signings made. I was one of many who believed that a player of Hatem Ben Arfa’s calibre would never be interested in a move to Newcastle, especially in our first season back in the Premier League. Credit to those who made the deal possible.

Could signings of a similar stature be possible this close season? Not according to some but I believe we will have a clever transfer window. Not making signings for vast amounts of money but cheaper, dependable players. I for one won’t complain if a few deals like the one that brought Cheik Tiote in were made this time around. Our transfer policy is becoming quite clear, money will not be spent on signing older players without money making potential.

Would moves for the likes of, Gervinho, Daniel Sturridge or Kevin Gameiro be realistic? None of these three players would be cheap but if they fulfill their potential and prove to be good Premier League players then the fees to take them away would be huge, which is what the owner wants according to previous statements released from the club.

It has been announced that Alan Smith has been told that he is free to find another club which will free up some room for the wages of a couple of decent signings. I would like to see us make signings of good quality rather than just adding depth by signing poorer quality players in numbers.

Where is the “zone” that the club should be aiming? We can’t expect world class but we also shouldn’t expect any players that won’t improve the quality of the squad.

We need to be aiming somewhere in the middle because, let’s face it, it’s where we find ourselves.

  1. Well said JJ we have enough players who fill the bulk up the squad but not adding quality as such

Good call about sturridge out of all the players you mentioned he would be my first choice but cant see chelsea letting him be sold maybe a loan?

  2. Both quality and quantity are needed if we’re going to be letting players go.

Personally I wish people would stop using Tiote as a shining example of how we should do it. How do we know he’s not the exeptioninstead of the norm?

Do I believe we’ll get the players we’re linked with ie Gamiero, Gervinho or Nzogbia? No, but we still need to bring in players as I firmly believe some decent players will be leavung.

To think we can replace them for small money is a little naive and a big risk to take.

  3. on balance – I think I’d rather have Gameiro than Gervinho – only because Lua-Lua deserves a chance this season – he did nowt wrong when he went on loan to Brighton. The money saved form buying Gervinho should go for a proper young centre forward. We’ll get f**k all value from buying in EPL – I’d like us to go for that lad Hooper from Celtic – we should have signed him last close season. max 5m plus Forster would do it.
By the way – another good reason for not buying Gervinho is because his first name is Gervaise – reminds me of Larry Graysons hair dresser. He went Brazilian (oo er) and he’s now gervinho ffs. I was seriously thinking of ‘Tattinho’ – has a certain ring to it 😎

  4. It’ll be some and some. The two British players in the news for huge transfer fees yesterday show why we may be a way off direct purchases of top-quality home-grown players, and may have to make do with foreign ones (with all the associated risks) and the success of our own youth set up.

That’s fine with me – prices will have to come down once Platini’s rules start to bite – but it does make it more important to retain the likes of Barton and Nolan. You can’t field a team of newbies who all speak different languages!

  5. In this transfer window, it will be “Money talks, B.S. walks”. NUFC have the cash, so will be a creditable bidder. It is up to the club to convince ambitious lads that big times are ahead.

  6. This is why a good scout who can see great potential in a young player is invaluable to a football club. NUFC seem to be doing ok in this department, bringing in kids from home and abroad that can save us a fortune in transfer fees.

  7. Stuart…Tiote IS the shining example of how we should do it & what we should strive to do tho…but will they all work out as good as Tiote, no they won’t

  8. everyone is panicking a bit but the transfer window shuts august 31 not june. That will be the time I judge Pardew and Ashley because then we know what we got out of selling Carroll

  9. Quote from Gervinho ; ” ARSENAL IS THE CLUB THAT MAKES ME DREAM. TO JOIN ARSENAL WOULD BE THE HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE”. I LOVE THE WAY THEY PLAY THE GAME, WITH YOUNG PLAYERS AND THE COACH GIVES THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISPLAY THEIR TALENT IN FULL”
This quote was on setanta sports website dated 2008!

If you look at the arsenal blogs now, they quite fancy their chances of signing him.

    Heads out the sand boys.

  10. bsn9- and if they don’t bid? i don’t think anyone thinks we’ll outbid them, but if they don’t bid we may have a chance

  11. If he loved arsenal so much why didnt he say thats where he was going the other day?

  12. Bit of inside info sharing what I have heard (albeit good source) but not saying it’s true!! Basically we probably won’t get gervinho coz out of our price range (Graham carr was wowed by him when scouting Cabaye and that’s what interested us) Cabaye is a done deal and will be announced tommorrow! Nolan and Barton have not been offered contracts because they are trying to run the team – they are taking seniority to a new level and thinking they know it all!! Don’t fret though the signings we make will be big maybe not WOW signings initially but all of the same standard if not better to the likes or Tiote and HBA – q floodgates of critics and support especially from stardust and booby shinton haha

  13. captain_floppy (really?? you’re sticking with that? πŸ˜† )

None of what you say sounds unlikely, to be honest. I think the only way the club will keep Barton and Nolan is if they back down a bit and let AP back into the management space that CH allowed the players into. Fair enough.

As for Gervinho, the only way I can see him coming here is if the Arse either don’t bid due to getting someone else (he’s Gervinho, not Ronaldo, remember) or not being able to offer him a starting place each week.

H’s no less likely to come here than Benny was. It’s all down to what else is on the table.

      (Quote)

  14. Think about it, Gervinho’s only gonna be talking to the club or clubs that have submitted a bid acceptable to his current club.

It’s not as though he’s on a free where he could go wherever he likes.

So, it’s dead simple, if we’ve not tabled a bid acceptable to his club, then we’re not in the running.

We’ll never know until his transfer to wherever is formalised or he announces he’s to stay where he is.

  15. Anyway, as someone’s said – it’s early days. Hopefully this piss-fight with Barton and Nolan can be resolved and they can crack on with a bit more certainty.

Oh, and Jose needs to be given a proper kick; stay or go (p.s. PLEEEEEEASE STAY!!!”) πŸ˜₯

  16. Talk of the Tyne had a good article that raised an important reason why Owl Heed needs to be replaced: if we find him objectionable just from his photo, what must it do to transfer negotiations? The likes of Gamiero are hardly likely to want to come here if their first instinct upon meeting their prospective new chairman is to punch his lights out.

  17. http://topgunnerz.wordpress.com/ Bobby speaks the truth, if arsenal show any interest we’re skrewed, on the positive side if arsenal don’t bid then we’re next in line, he can prove himself with us and arsenal can have him for twice what we’ll pay πŸ™‚ i live in hope wenger has no interest

      (Quote)

  18. Lobacka: quite. And that’s a very big ‘if’. I see us as being in that next tier down from those in European slots in terms of attracting talent, and we can out-gun some of them, too. BS9 sells us short.

      (Quote)

  19. Also, Wenger needs home-grown players and fast. I think when we went to the Emirates there were 8 Englishmen on the field, and seven of them were in black and white. πŸ˜›

  20. Anyone else think Carroll will be on the phone asking to come home? He must be sick of having his mirror-shiny wheels nicked.

      (Quote)

  21. Whumpie – remember you don’t have to be English to be home grown. Tim Krul is home grown for example….

The way Wenger runs most of his team will be home grown albeit from different countries. Fabregas is home grown for a start

      (Quote)

  22. Whumpie aye in happy with that name haha

Your right though we need to tie up (or lose) Enrique ASAP! Barton and Nolan havnt been told to leave they have just had the door opened – kind of “well stay if you want but we won’t stop you going and we are getting what your worth”
Anyway there is one young man that many are forgetting about who we signed last summer – Dan Gosling! He will prove to be head and shoulders above Barton and Nolan when fit! He is more attacking than people think!!

  23. @witters

If you want to check the comments made by Gervinho, which you say I made up, type in google ” arsenal blogs Gervinho ”
    It’s the setanta headline.

Arsenal fans are very confident about getting him and have apparently been watching him for a few seasons.

      (Quote)

  24. BS9 – all fine and sensible stuff. And I agree that it’s likely he’ll go there and not here. But all this “quit dreaming”, “smell the coffee” stuff is b.s. If Wenger fancies someone different – or can get them more easily, then being 2nd choice is not a bad position.

      (Quote)

  25. Arsenal fans were also confident of winning at least one, if not two trophies a few months back. I know many.

      (Quote)

  26. The name gervinho was given to him in his youth by one of his brazilian coaches because the coach joked that he played more like a Brazilian than an Ivorian.

      (Quote)

  27. The Geordies will call him gervy the Americans will call him g-spot cause once he gets a touch, magic happens πŸ˜‰

      (Quote)

  28. Unfortunately (and rarely) bobby shinton is correct!! The only reason we became interested in him is due to Cabaye being scouted!! Graham carr couldn’t believ how good gervinho was and so we made enquiry!! Champions league football and top 4 finishes with arsenal or mid table mediocrity with toon?? Hmmm!!!

      (Quote)

  29. captain_floppy – why are you and others assuming that Wenger wants him, has no better options, can afford him and that his bosses will better our offer? All of these things have to be in place for him to go to Arsenal.

So yes, given the choice, he’ll probably go there. But to assume he has the choice is wide of the mark. His club has to agree too.

      (Quote)

  30. Yes agree Whumpie however arsenal have always been known for announcing signings as and when they happen!! Gervinho fits arsenals mould and with fabregas and nasri offski he will be a perfect addition!! Don’t get me wrong having him here would be a statement of intent but the only big signing Ashley has approved is colo we havn’t splashed plus 10mil on anyone else especially since the books have been balanced!!!
