What is Kevin Nolan actually worth?

What is this man worth?
Today the club have turned down a £3m bid for Kevin Nolan from West Ham, which lead me to think about how much he would actually worth if we were to sell him.

A lot of people will currently be thinking that we shouldn’t even be thinking about selling our captain and top goal-scorer from last season, and of course I know that, and I don’t believe that we should be selling him either, but this is just a hypothetical question.

So, with recent transfer deals such as Jordan Henderson leaving Sunderland for the rumoured worth of around £20m for a player who scored a lot less goals than Nolan last season and is, to be quite honest, an average player with an over-inflated fee due to him being English.

The last couple of seasons have seen Nolan bag around 30 goals, albeit it around half of them were in the Championship, but still, a goal’s a goal. Also with him being a big character in the dressing room, he is most certainly a decent asset for Newcastle.

But here comes the flipside of the coin. With the rumoured signings of big names such as Charles N’Zogbia, possibly Gervinho, and the imminent arrival of Yohan Cabaye, many people including me are struggling to see where he will fit in the team next season. This is mainly due to his lack of mobility and how it seems that he heavily relies on Cheik Tiote to do some of his leg work.

Something I cannot look past though is his brilliant scoring record for us and how he is often there at the right time to slot the ball home, and last season without his vital goals we would have been definitely struggled a lot more than we did.

Nolan was bought for £4m the season we were relegated from the Premier League, but has he really improved since then? Maybe he has. As the last few seasons he has shown that he is a bit more of a goal-scorer you can rely on. But he has also aged, and to be honest he’s not really getting any more mobile as years go by.

But two years on since that £4m transfer I feel that he is probably only worth around that amount if we were to sell him now. He has undoubtedly proved himself to be a good player over the last few seasons but for his age, coupled with him not signing a new deal, I feel that any offer around £4-5m million may be accepted. This wouldn’t be too bad in a business sense as we’ve got a good few years out of him and sold him for the same as we bought him.

The question is, can West Ham afford to pay that fee and his wage demands while languishing in the Championship? That remains to be seen but if he does go, he will be a huge miss in the dressing room and somebody will have to step up and be the leader that Nolan is at this moment in time.

Also, hopefully if Nolan does have to go anywhere. I really hope that he goes to Liverpool as they’re starting to make a habit over paying over the odds for English players. £20 million and £35 million anyone? 😉

So, what do you personally think Nolan is worth?

Water off a duck’s back to me, I realise there’ll be underhand comments sometimes, but people get the wrong end of the stick a lot anarl. It’s far too easy to type something off the cuff, then regret it later.

  7. Quote from Gervinho ; ” ARSENAL IS THE CLUB THAT MAKES ME DREAM. TO JOIN ARSENAL WOULD BE THE HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE”. I LOVE THE WAY THEY PLAY THE GAME, WITH YOUNG PLAYERS AND THE COACH GIVES THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISPLAY THEIR TALENT IN FULL”
This quote was on setanta sports website dated 2008!

If you look at the arsenal blogs now, they quite fancy their chances of signing him.

Heads out the sand boys. 🙄

  8. We won’t be getting Gervy nzog and gamiero so quite frankly there’s definitely a place for Nolan…and he’s lost mobility as he’s been playing with an ankle injury since january, I reckon we’ll see more movement from him next season than we did at the beginning of the last.
