Easier said than done?

Our last 20 goal a season striker.
Although on the whole everyone seems quite pleased with the signing of Yohan Cabaye, the overall feeling as mentioned in the previous article by Toonsy is that we need a target man, someone to put the ball in the back of the net consistently.

However I can’t help but feel that some people are being very unrealistic about the type of player they would like us to sign. I’ve seen it mentioned fairly frequently that to improve the team we need someone that can guarantee you around 20 goals a season. Sounds easy doesn’t it?

Now that figure might look great, but in all honesty I am extremely doubtful that we could get someone who is capable of scoring 15 goals never mind 20.

Where is all this doom, gloom and negativity coming from I hear you cry?

Well let’s take a look at some solid stats and you might see where I’m coming from. This season only two players in the Premier league managed to score 20 goals and they both play for top four teams. We don’t even have a chance of getting players of that calibre (the two I’m talking about are Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tevez) until we start making serious progress in the league, and by that I mean reach Europe at the very least.

The last time we had a striker capable of this was in the 2003/2004 season when a certain Alan Shearer netted 22 in the league, and since then our strikers have been inconsistent to say the least excluding Craig Bellamy. Yes Michael Owen, you are classified in my eyes under the tag abysmal).

So why don’t we try and find a striker that can get us around 13-15 goals a season?

Once again this isn’t going to be as easy as it sounds as nearly all of those players currently find themselves in a team that finished ahead of us in the league. Why would they want to take a step back and join us? Of course in the days of Freddy Sheppard we would have offered them a weekly wage they couldn’t refuse on top of a tasty transfer fee, but those days are over and it is in Ashley’s long term interests to live within the clubs means.

The other option of course is to try and snare players away from abroad, and this is the route which we as a club seem to be aiming for. However this is very risky territory because as has been proven countless times before, not all players can adapt to our league.

Could a striker like Kevin Gameiro for example, who scored 22 goals in Ligue 1, perform just as well in the Premier League? I doubt it very much.

But remember to be rewarded you need to take risks, which is why looking overseas is our best and least costly option. And as much as we all want a new fresh striker that will take the league by storm, it is unlikely that it is going to happen. Maybe Demba Ba is our best bet at the minute?

Whatever happens, this is Newcastle United, and it’s going to be a hell of a long summer!

  1. Apparently Colleen Rooney donated her pubes for her husbands hair transplant, works better from one c**t to another.

  2. I don’t know much of anything on Death Row, but I don’t think they can hold a candle to PE:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear_of_a_Black_Planet#Critical_response

Their “Nation of Milliions” and “Fear of a Black Planet” albums were made before sampling was effectively destroyed by lawsuits and it’s their production team–the Bomb Squad with Hank and Keith Shocklee–AND the writing that makes them, in my view, the best hip-hop act ever.

“In a retrospective review of the album, Allmusic editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine said that “as a piece of music, this is the best hip-hop has ever had to offer”, calling it “a remarkable piece of modern art, a record that ushered in the ’90s in a hail of multi-culturalism and kaleidoscopic confusion”.”

  3. Yeah, Mark, I was listening to side one of “Fear of a Black Planet” while reading the blog, so my mind is split between admiration for such an epic album and contemplation of the TOON.

Wait, is it true? We scooped Ba from Wham? Where’s a link to prove this?

  4. I keep mis-reading “Fear of a Black Planet” and imagine this forum has Porcupine Tree fans. Then I realise it says “black” and not “blank” and get depressed.

hey [email protected]…yes… its not so much a stepford wives blog after all…….and i bet it wont be cum the end fo the window thats for sure, you might have a little moan too i bet .. but we need to crack on now and get our business completed as we want all the lads together for a full pre season. the outs need to be shipped now and the newbies need to be done and dusted.
i think it will be jose and nolan out as the main to go and a few others such as routledge and i am hoping that its zogs and a good front man in. i dont think we need anymore in the middle as we are stacked out.

  9. I say we make a £20m bid for Carroll back just for sh*ts and giggles! It’s not like he’s done anything for Liverpool since he got there 😉

  10. THat’s not a difficult proposition, Mark. But congratulations none the less.

BA up front! How could he jump for high balls with all those chains weighing him down? He strikes me much more as a DM.

  11. Thad- I know what Ur saying. I think it’s due to all the speculation going around with nothing becoming official. Excitement to disappointment, but it is early days

  12. Andrew, the guy said not much will happen over the weekend, early next week sometime.

Craig, I know it sounds bull with it from the Mirror or any paper but it’s different from when they said ‘they’ve agreed’ compared to ‘there interested’

If you were involved in discussing rap music, then Porcupine Tree is likely not for you, lol.

  14. Remember Ibrahim Ba from AC Milan? He was a canny player.

I am just glad we went for him instead of his mate Carlton Cole!

  15. Ah, funky, that’s where you’re wrong. I see that your beloved Porcupine tree toured with Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew and thought “they might be worth checking out.” Rather catholic tastes in the FSOTC home.

  16. Craig well mate did you fancy a change from the cut and thrust world 😆
I know Best done good in the end but I really dont think he is the answer to take us to the next level, imo a top striker needs to be our No1 priority

  17. dan4toon… it was said yesterday that it was official…..gerviniho was going to arse.. but then today the VP of his club said only spurs had even put offer in – which is ironic as spurs were about the only club that were not mentioned as being after him to start with. The bottom line is, the papers do not have a clue. cant believe a word the rags say, end of.
The prob is now, its such huge huge money that clubs will do it all top secret as for fear of prices escalating and a bidding war, this leaving the scum in fleet street to just make up any old crap.

  18. JG, as should everyone 😉

But yeah there’s always lots of stuff reported in the papers but when they say things concrete like last week with Neil Taylor, it was in the Mirror first saying we’ve bid £1 million which activated a clause and then Swansea confirmed it!

      (Quote)

  19. Craig, if you can’t believe ONE word the papers say how come they were the first to report the Taylor bid before Swansea confirmed it?

  20. Speaking of Ibrahims, the norweigen Ibrahim looks a hard fooker!
Jobey tell Carr to have a look at the lad.

  23. have i got the wrong Ba in me head cos the one i am thinking of has crap attitude, is always crocked and thinks he is dogs nads… is that the one?

      (Quote)

  24. dan4toon… ok, one word then but if thats the case you must also belive the mirror when it says that jose is a gonner as that was all part of that story. so do you think jose is gone? i do tbh.

      (Quote)

  25. Craig, Ive seen you write how much you would like n’zogbia back, which is fair enough mate, he is great on the pitch 😀 But apart from the crocked part, you basically described n’zogbia in post 114? Unless im reading it wrong, if I am I apologize, but you wouldnt have ba, but you would n’zogbia?

      (Quote)

  26. If you look back on the previous comments I’ve said Jose will probably leave.

What am saying is yes most of the stuff in the papers is bull but when they say things like ‘he’s defiantly joined’ or ‘defiantly agreed’ there generally spot on because usually they try and stay evasive and give them selves leg room.

  27. Oh god people are getting their hopes up about Ba Ba black sheep scoring us 15 goals, he hasn’t even signed for us yet! and thats even if his knee’s hold up.

      (Quote)

  28. FSOTC- can’t say I’m displeased with the prospect of signing Ba. I still Leon Best should be given his chance. Rotate between him and Ba and I think we’ll be ok. Best wants to prove himself and I think he should get his chance. His goal to game ratio was feckin ridiculous. If his name was Kaka, he’d be bought by Real Madrid for 40mil. He’s our diamond in the rough, and I say gan on son! Score us 20 goals and make us look good!

      (Quote)

  29. If Carroll wasn’t a Judas and didn’t get injured he could have probably got close to being a 20 goal man. He was on 11.

IF and IF = nowt really though.

  30. I don’t know Ba from a hole in the ground, but his numbers are good, going back to his record in Germany and looking at his production for poor old, abject West Ham.

    Stats can deceive, of course.

  31. 20 goal a season striker almost guarantees you premiership survival and that’s worth 60+ million, Berbatov would be worth a 10million bid??

      (Quote)

  32. We should get a genius striker like huntlaar, mario gomez or Diego forlan because that is the only way forward 😉
