“Judas” Versus “El Toro”

Carroll and Jose - Hero or Villain?
Something which was brought to my attention recently is the widely different opinions which people have on these two players.

Andy Carroll has already left the club, and it looks like Jose will be leaving over the summer, however that is where the similarities end.

Ask any Newcastle fan what they think of Jose Enrique and 99% of them will say something positive, which is right in my opinion because he has been a great player and servant to the club when he has been here. They will also say something along the lines of “I don’t blame the lad for wanting to leave, he deserves better”.

However if you ask a fellow Geordie how they feel about Andy Carroll then there is a lot of hatred towards him for leaving us when he did and any positive comments are few and far between.

Although at the time I was extremely angry about the Andy Carroll saga, as the heat of the moment passed, I gathered my thoughts and began to think. If we don’t know what happened, and who’s decision it was to leave, then how can we judge him?

For all we know the club received an offer of £35 million for him and simply couldn’t refuse which would leave Andy with very little say in the matter. Of course it may well have been that Carroll was the one that set about orchestrating the move, but hey, I doubt we will ever find out.

So surely the way we feel about Carroll is hypocritical?

If we hate Carroll for leaving us then why not have the same opinions on the possible departure of Enrique. And yes I know he hasn’t been sold, and I hope with all my heart he doesn’t go, but the likelihood is that he will.

It’s ok for our left back to leave us, but if our local Geordie hero goes then he has a price on his head, sounds like one rule for one and one rule for another?

I know I’m gonna get a bit of stick for this but it’s just my two cents on the matter, what’s yours?

  6. All the best to Shearer at Cardiff but it’s a poor appointment in my opinion…Just hope he sees sense and doesn’t bring Dowie back as his number 2. Needs someone who can actually help him with tactics.

It’s amazing how a world class footballer in Gullit just can’t transfer his playing experience onto his own players.

He must have played under some great managers and must have learnt from them. 😕

Cardiff have zero strikers at the minute – Bothroyd left on a free, Bellamy did go back to City and Chopra was sold to Ipswich…Massive task for Shearer if he takes it, all the best to him if he does.

  11. Chopra was sold? Must have missed that…kinda surprised they got rid tbh, he wasn’t that bad for them 😀

  12. I would take Bellamy anyday.
He would have to take a wage cut of course but he’s still got a season in him and would do a great job for us.

I love the way he sticks to his guns, battles, says what he thinks and upsets everyone.
    Total opposite to me! 😆

  13. Bobby get your head out of the sand and smell the coffee, we have a 20k p/w wage cap, you think someone from a champions league would ever join us? Get on board the reality train….. bloody dreamers 🙄

No, I know Wraith claimed it was £20k but I’ve always maintained it will be in the region of £35-£45k.

I replied to your Gullit post.

Can’t understand how he is so bad. It can only be his bad man management.

  18. I dunno Bobby , must admit I was very excited when he took over intially , he done a decent job at chelsea. He sounds like a dick. Seemingly ”he spend more time in the bars and discos” ( direct quote from the owner )

  19. Bobby- I’m not so sure we have a wage cap as such, as I think Ash would pay if it suited him-more of a right price for the right player sort of thing. Obviously though he’s a tight git and he’ll aim or players who want less, as most clubs would. If we did have a wage cap though I think it would still be around 70k or so. I think Benny is probably on 45-50, perhaps Cabaye as well, and if we’re to believe the club, they were willing to re-sign Joey on his “reported” 80k or so a week, and the sticking point was the length of the contract rather than the wages…

  20. Bobby @ 181 I have yet to see Icedog abuse anyone so I cant see it happen unless he was really wound up. Ice has the ability to rise above it

  21. Thinking about the Ranger situation I think Shearer would be the type of no nonsense type of Manager to sort him out, But then I think Pards would be the same. Just that with regular games in a lower league I think it would help him even more

  22. Big Al as cardiff boss ,it just doesn’t seem right somehow .If it was Southampton ok , wonder if he will ask Speed to join his backroom staff , just to keep him right on all things welsh.

  23. Good article and good posts on AC and Jose – shows it still hurts. My take is that AC thought he could up his wages as a new England international(probably with his tw*t agent pulling the strings).Ashley was 1 step ahead and already had the sale lined up waiting for Torres to leave so used the opportunity to call his bluff and push it through.I remember Harry Redknapp saying something like we all new Carroll was available.Dont think for 1 minute that Ashley was backed up against the wall on this one – he was in control.
I would have liked to have seen Ashley do what Karl Oyston did with Adam – turn his phone off – That would have told Dalglish and the rest of the EPL we are not a feeder club.I’m still gutted!!!

Barton is supposed to be on £60k and agreed to accept a wage cut.
That’s his version but he wanted a 4 yr contract and the club were offering 2 .

Ice loves to have his digs at any opportunity.

I’m just throwing the rod out . 😆

    Bit of fun. 😆

  26. Bobby from what I can gather was that the 2 yr contract at approx £40k was to start straight away cancelling his yr left on his current one @ £60k. They must have thought he was a right clampit

  27. I don’t understand this philosophy of fan’s being able to welcome back players..? I think once a player goes, it’s over. In the modern game not many players can return to a former club and achieve much. I think the amount of vitriol NUFC fan’s hold for Carroll is partly down to frustration at knowing how good he could be. In my opinion he won’t be half the player at Liverpool that he could have been with 52,000 adoring him. I look forward to the day he realises it. 🙂

      (Quote)

  28. It’s not really hypocritical because they are two totally different situations. Enrique had no connection to the club before he joined the Toon so even though it is hard to accept I think people can still appreciate the fact he would have no loyalty to us. The Andy Carroll situation is different the lad was supposed to be one of us growing up idolising the toon that is the way he portrayed himself so because he had that connection with Newcastle you would assume that he would be fulfilled being the number 9 for Newcastle that is every Geordies dream. Instead he took the money. The only situation I see that is hypocritical is the fact that Beardsley has been forgiven when he did alot worse when he left Newcastle to join Liverpool. It would probably take Carroll coming back and playing well for alot of people to forgive him.

  29. Players come and players go, you very seldom find out the real reason, money, glory, fed up with the goings on all excuses really. I suppose most are just like us they are loyal to their employer until another better offer comes along. Always remember though regardless of what the club say the final decision is always down to the player after all he can say NO! Well thta is unless his agent says YES because it is them who control today’s game they need some extra money so they cause unrest amongst their players saying this club and that club are interested in their skills. Most players believe that they are better than they are and deserve more money blame the agent and the player they control today’s game.
This is now thesilly season I take no notice of us being interested in such and such a player until I see them in a black & white strip at a press conference or photshoot. The press know that if they print ‘a source reports’ they cannot be held responsible and the guillable fans lap it up. We will find out who will be wearing the great Black & White shirts during pre-season games and whn they line up for the first kick off which is not many weeks away. Whoever it is all we ask is that they are proud to wear the shirt and give 100% to the cause we cannot ask for more.
