The King is dead, Long live the King

The sheriff and his Deputy

As soon as the news broke today that Kevin Nolan looked to be heading to West Ham, minds and eyes soon were fixed on Joey Barton to see what his reaction would be.

Aside from Nolan’s family, I don’t think that there’s anyone who could be more affected by the move. It’s no secret that the two scousers had a strong bond, and there shouldn’t be any surprise that Barton wasn’t going to take the news well.

His initial response on twitter was one of dejection as he asked,

“what’s goin on at the toon ffs?”

Then in a tribute to his former teammate;

Great player, leader, captain, person, trainer and mostly a friend for life. Devastated to see him SOLD!

What followed was a prediction that Jose Enrique, Jonas Gutierrez, and himself were next to leave.

Not surprisingly, this sent a shock wave of concern across the Internet and through the Geordie faithful.

At the moment however, Barton’s intentions remain the same. His heart currently resides in Newcastle and he intends to see out the last year in his contract and fight for some silverware.

He tried to clear things up via Sky stating;

“I love the football club, without a shadow of a doubt, and I think everyone knows that,”

“I have a great working relationship with the manager and a lot of the other players, obviously the other senior players who have been through the ups and downs – the likes of myself, Kevin Nolan, Stevie Harper, Smudger (Alan Smith).

“I have got no ambitions to leave the football club, I don’t want to leave the football club, and I would love nothing more than to win a trophy at Newcastle.”

“It’s a difficult situation and I totally understand the club’s point of view, but on the flip side it’s hard for me to get drawn into it.

“I am an employee of the football club and I have to go back and do a job in the summer. As far as I know I will go back to Newcastle United and play until my contract runs out and they tell me I am no longer needed.

“I have got no ambitions to leave the football club, I don’t want to leave the football club, and I would love nothing more than to win a trophy at Newcastle. Whether I get the opportunity to do that is out of my hands.

“I am an employee of the football club and if they choose to do something, I would be foolish not to listen to it. If I’m not wanted then I believe greatly in my ability and I would have to re-evaluate my options.

“That’s the situation we are at at the minute. If that’s the situation in a month’s time then I will report back for pre-season training, if it’s not then it’s not.

“It’s all hypothetical at the minute and I’m just trying to keep myself in shape and get myself ready for a league campaign with Newcastle United next season.”

It’s a better approach from Barton and one that I hope will win him back some favour with the board. He is one player who is digging his heals in and refusing to quit on the toon.

This could’ve been the perfect opportunity for Joey to pit the fans against the board but he has chosen a better route and one that may save his Newcastle career.

Once the dust settles, I think most will realize that although Kevin Nolan has been a vital part of our recent success, something has to be said for the fact that he’ll be lacing his boots up in the championship next year, and if he was too good to be sold, then surely he’d still be a member of an EPL team.

We have lost a good captain, and one that I will always remember favourably for his deeds whilst a magpie, but Joey Barton’s interview today showed that we still have quality leadership on Tyneside. For now…

Hopefully the board and Joey can reconcile their differences for the better of the club.

  1. BB I do agree about the money in the game and I really dont see it getting any better tbh. I think Joey will try to make them pay and wont roll on his back for the fatman. I think the only way is if he is told that he will be training with the kids and never get playing again.

  2. “the biggest problem…which many seem to be missing is that NO player seems happy under this regime…”

    Give examples of 5….

  3. Dave, JB would soon have that all over the press and media, the fat man wouldn’t like that. But thats maybe just a bit extreme.
I do agree that JB is likely to see out his contract and walk for free rather than let the fat controller make any cash on him.
And for the record, and russell πŸ™„ many clubs will be after his services. IMO

  4. Just got this form a West Ham Blog. ‘West Ham Til I Die’ I believe.

“He is a passer of the ball, a player that can dictate play and has the vision to create openings for others. He is a midfielder in the mould of Danny Blanchflower, Johnny Haynes or Johny Giles, none of whom had any pace, but regally dictated play with the quality of their vision and passing”

…Hmm, not quite sure they’ve been watching the right player

  5. Dave, I’m sure Spencer wouldn’t call you a ‘makem’ either.

Bit below the belt that πŸ‘Ώ

  6. DAVE divnt kna whats ganning on in club.i know a lot of people dont like super mac but on radio he said there were a few in club that thought they were running it,he said he has been in club a few times lately and seen it for himself, nolan was one of them, said they had same trouble once before when a certain player there that went to w/ham,and was pleased nolan is going.
    dont know what to belive

  7. El Toro-Spoken to a lot of fans of other clubs today about Nolan and they seem to think he’s superman, saying he should be in the England squad πŸ˜† These same lot maintain that players like Tiote, Krul and Colo are completely useless.

  8. πŸ˜† πŸ˜†

He knew it was a 100% joke aswell, and he said summat pretty evil to me πŸ˜†

  9. BB your right mate πŸ˜†

ElToro I think they are getting mixed up with someone else πŸ˜†

Spence the one we have in work has been with us on trail for the last 2 yrs mate he works 6 days a week gets treated like sh1te and doesn’t get paid except for money I give him because he is a decent kid

  10. Are we going to start a sweepstake on how many yellow cards Tiote gets next season.

  11. Dave, I can put up with that πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜†

BB- it will be between 10 and 15 again easy πŸ˜†

  12. Don’t get me wrong. Nolan is a good player, but that is NOTHING near a description of his key strengths. Sounds more like Barton to be honest πŸ˜†

  13. BB-His first game will be his yellow, surely that obvious?

I actually think he’ll get less yellows this season, namely because he’ll get a few more reds and therefore serve longer suspensions

  14. What does Nolan actually do? πŸ˜†

Apart from chip in with the odd goal and holds the team together πŸ˜†

  15. Newkie

That’s no surprise. No player is any good until they leave or declare their intention to leave NUFC πŸ™„ . Bitter fans.

  16. Yeah exactly, Nolan is a real coup for them, don’t think they’ll miss the majority of their squad if Sam gets them a few more decent signings. I would have killed for a guy that got 12 goals in the Prem the season we went down coming to us…If Barton went that would be a whole new story…we need that guy πŸ˜•

  17. BB- if your refuring to tiote I agree its not a lauging matter in the mid season.. but close season it is funny talking about πŸ˜†

i’m sure he only got one red?

  18. Ice @ 171 an ex player told me that Nolan thought he run the show and that was part of the reason Hoots had to go because he was happy to let them get on with it, He also told me that he tried to push Saylor out .

  19. yes and he was unlucky on a few too.
Should get better under the expert guidance of our oh so much more vastly experienced manager πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

  20. dave- He probably only wanted saylor oot cos he nolan used to lick Carroll’s arse and saylor and carroll werent the best of mates πŸ˜†

  21. El Toro-exactly mate, I’m tired of pointing out good players to supporters of the top 4 because they just slag them all off until they’re linked with either ManU or Chelsea and then its suddenly “oh yeah they’ve earned the step up to our team now.” I had an argument about a week ago with two Arsenal fans about how good/bad Colo was. I mean I thought it was blatantly clear Arsenal knew nothing about defending…and then off the back of the last three games they both thought STaylor was amazing. So irritating πŸ™„

  22. Right, she who must be obeyed is rattling the luv chains, so I’ll gan do me duty
    C yous tomorrow

  23. BB πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜† Have fun πŸ˜‰

  24. “I mean I thought it was blatantly clear Arsenal knew nothing about defending…and then off the back of the last three games they both thought STaylor was amazing. So irritating”

Sound like your usual top four supporting, media spoon fed fans, mate. Pay them no mind.

  25. Reet lads im outta here hopefully get on tomorrow to see whats happening. Spence watch me back for us mate while Ice isn’t about πŸ˜†

  26. I reckon the Nolan sale is the filling for a NUFC flavoured sh*t sandwich. We had great news of Cabaye signing on Friday so I reckon the next few days we’re gonna have another good signing announced…

  27. Agree Jamie…

I’ll be very happy if we sign this lad Matudi, Arsenal have been looking at him for ages, lets hope we can pull it off!

  28. Jamie-I hope the bread we’re eating is some top quality stuff if we’re eating a sh*t sandwich 😯

  29. Fingers crossed, the Nolan stuff will all blow over if a couple of signings come in quick like, sounds like Ashley’s style..

  30. Newkie, he would be perfect in a three with Cabaye and Tiote.

He can be like Tiote and holding but where as Tiote can pass etc Matuidi has a good shot and likes to get forward more.

He’s left footed as well so would give a really nice balance to the midfield.

  31. Dan-Sounds good mate, shame its another midfielder but I guess Nolan leaving means we can bring another in, should be able to cope with any injury crisis to our midfield anyway..although knowing Newcastle… πŸ˜†

  32. Newkie, knowing our luck when Tiote goes to African Cup of Nations Matuidi will get injured πŸ‘Ώ

    Kind of makes my previous article redundant but with us looking like we’re getting Barnetta as well I’d go for something like;

    Cabaye Tiote Matuidi
    Ben Arfa Ba Eridng/Barnetta.

  33. Newkie – You checked your e-mail? Check you spam bin aswell if there is nowt there.

New thread up in one minute

  34. Toonsy- Cheers mate, yeah was in my spam folder and didn’t notice it, cheers dude πŸ˜€

Dan-Aye, Newcastle can pull of an injury crisis like no other πŸ˜† But yeah, that midfield…I’d say in the centre we’d even be better than some current top 4s-Chelsea with Essien/Lampard/Mikel/Ramires, well Essien and Lampard are on their way out and Mikel and Ramires are average. City as well…Barry and Hatchet De jong, we can beat that πŸ˜€
