Demba Ba set to sign for Newcastle?

The Ba is nearly open!
It looks as though Demba Ba is one the verge of signing for Newcastle United with numerous sources suggesting that the players is currently in talks with the club.

Interest in the West Ham striker has been strong ever since the Hammers suffered relegation, with the emergence of a clause in his contract allowing the player to move for a free upon said relegation only serving to increase the speculation regarding the player.

Whether or not it’s true remains to be seen, but it’s getting to the point where there are that many people reporting it that I’d tend to put a bit more credence into the rumour. If it is true then I’ll guess all that is left to do is discuss personal terms and get a medical sorted out.

It’s that last bit that could cause the problem, like it has done before for the player. Remember, he has failed two medicals, although on the flipside of that he looked absolutely fine for West Ham and took to scoring in the Premier League like a proverbial duck to water. Hopefully we’ll see more of the latter.

Ba would be a good signing if he can steer clear of his injury worries, and a degenerative bone issue is a worry in my book. My hope is that he isn’t going to be the only striker we’ll see coming into the club over the summer.

Mind you, lets get this one over the line first!

  1. 2008/9 18th
    2009/10 Championship
    2010/11 12th

Looks to me like an upward trend over the last few years

  2. Regarding Newcastle as a “selling club” and MA “pocketing 50m”.

First of all, there’s really nothing wrong with having a negative transfer balance. Look at where Arsenal and Man Utd are in the transfer tables… and what about West Ham? If money spent was all there was to go by, Man City would be champions and Hammers would be in Europe.

I for one am happy with a negative transfer balance… as long as we’re bringing in the Tiotes, HBAs, Williamsons and Bests of this world. And Gosling on a free? That’s canny business if you ask me.

Put your hand up if you’d rather have the club splashing the cash on signings like Luque, Boumsong, and Owen? I count more than 30m spent there.

Secondly, everyone’s talking about Mike Ashley “taking money out of the club”. Mike Ashley may own the club, but ultimately the club is his ultimate asset. Whatever the valuation of the club right now, it can’t be worth more than what he paid for it originally. Let’s say he sunk in 200m-300m in the buying price and subsequent interest free loans. Hypothetically, the club is worth maybe 200m now, if he takes 50m out, then the club is only worth 150m. That’s simple accounting math.

The only way Ashley will profit from the club is if he increases the quality of the playing squad, and the club gets into Europe and increases its gates and commercial revenues. Doesn’t sound too bad to me.

  3. I dont see the trend considering we rose from 13th to 12th and then finished 18th 😕 but even if we did do well this season, are we going to succumb to 2nd season syndrome ? Wolves almost did, Birmingham did, and several clubs in the past have, i hope we can stay strong

  4. In all seriousness, we should forget about the $35m dollars we got for that fella in January and look to sign good players that will help build a more competitive team. Who cares if they cost $2m or $15m… I can see what MA is trying to do with the club…. I just hope it pays off..

  5. @JG No, not a deliberate attempt, a genuine mistake re -Allardyce. I was of the belief that Shepherd had sanctioned those signings in the summer before he stood down as chairman in the July.

  6. Colm Rose @79: you can’t see the improvement from 18th to Championship winners to 12th?

  7. Pardew interested in bringing in Jonathan Spector, available on a free, contact made with his representatives #nufc

    Please no.

  8. I have asked this before but…

People go on about how mint it was getting 35 million for carroll and we had to sell him at that price…

Why does it matter to us (fans) how much we got for him if we don’t spend it?

  9. No matter how many good/great players we sign this window, if we haven’t spent the full 35m it will be a disaster..
    ——————–
I’ve been saying that too. If we bring in 5-6 good players and spend 25M the “Ashley’s a greedy git who is out to destroy the club” brigage will be vocal.

  10. Yes i can in those figures BrisVegas , but i mean altogether it doesnt make great reading for us to go from 7th in 06, to 13th in 07, 12th in 08 and then the championship and back to 12th in the prem, but yes in the last 3 seasons it is a decent trend

  11. Moreno- it shouldn’t, but any little chance that some get to have a moan about Ashley, they’ll take it.
I can understand he’s earned that, but it’s really gotta stop at some point because it does no good.

  12. @Moreno, do we have a special glass jar that the 35m gets put into just to buy players. Mate that money gets absorbed into the running of the club on a day to day basis… This line of thinking that we have a secret stash of money that is only to be used on new players is just not the case… Like I said… The 35m should be forgotten about and lets spend wisely on the players we need to improve, not the players we need to make sure their fees add up to 35m…

Howay, you know what I mean….divvn’t be patronising with your ‘special glass jar’ analogy.

  14. I agree with forget about the 35 million, that’s why I ask the question….does it matter how much we sold him for if we don’t spend it? (To you and me, the average fan….not the fat cats on the board)

  15. Sorry Moreno 😕 , not my intention at all… I respect your posts mate…

  16. 🙄 It’s gotten to the stage that I feel like the 35m is burning a hole in all of our pockets!!

      (Quote)

  17. Moreno I totally agree it shouldn’t matter to us how much a player is sold for ,or how much a player costs as long as that player improves the team

      (Quote)

  18. It matters coz it helps refurbish the team and pays off some running costs/debts or what have you.

And it justifies selling the player.

  19. Wait what happened to the Jar? I could have sworn we had one kicking around somewhere…..

  20. Bris – “And it justifies selling the player.”

    Fair enough there. It does.

Just sick of hearing about 35 million all the time, as Aussie Mag says, it will get absorbed into the running of the club too….they have already said it will be used for wages etc.

Bris – coming back to ‘it justifies selling the player’

I would have to say that is still open for me until we replace him with a good striker.

  22. I really hope at least a portion of the Carroll cash goes into the running of the club, because the daily mirror showed each premier league club’s debt last week i think, and we’re in like £143 million debt somehow, so if this cash can do something to reduce that or stop it growing, thumbs up !

  23. It was an offer too good to refuse, I think.

I liked Carroll. I was really impressed with how he was progressing and felt confident with im in the team. I was looking forward to him developing into some kind of cross between Shearer and Berbatov.

A week before Xmas a friend of mine asked me how much I thought he was worth. 15-20 mil, I said. He thought that I was overrating him.

I’d have preferred him to stay, but if it helps fund a new era, and hopefully a successful one, who am I to argue?

  24. Colm@67…I think the days of managers having any part in the contract talks have long since gone now. 🙁

  25. That sucks, maybe just maybe Pardew could have done something to keep Nolan, i dunno, explain the situation to him better ? We all know Ashley isnt the best at communicating, and that Llambias seems as bad in many ways

      (Quote)

  26. To be honest I’m inclined to believe the rumours that Pardew had told Nolan he wasn’t assured of a starting place next season, so good luck to the lad if he’s moved for regular football though I’m sure he could have got another Prem club if he’d waited 🙁
