Marveaux signs five year deal at Newcastle.

Marveaux signs five year deal.
Newcastle have this morning confirmed the signing of a second player in two days in the shape of former Rennes winger Sylvain Marveaux.

The 25-year-old will move to St James’ Park on July 1st when his Rennes contract expires and will join our other two new captures of Yohan Cabaye and Demba Ba in what is looking like will be a new look Newcastle team for next season.

The former French Under-21 international has made over 100 (102 to be precise) appearances for Rennes and has scored 16 goals in the process. He can play in a number of positions in midfield but is more commonly used as a left winger.

Here is a video of him in action to give us a bit more background. I’ve never seen the lad play to be honest so it helps me out aswell!

What I do know is that Liverpool were very interested in the player and it had been reported that a deal had been agreed with them. Apparently not and it’s Newcastle United who have acted quickly to secure another player. Here is what Alan Pardew had to say about securing his second signing in two days:

“It’s a great coup to have signed Sylvain, who has received interest from a number of other clubs,” Pardew told the club website. “He may not be well known to many of our fans but he is a real talent and a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time. It’s been a good couple of days for us on the transfer front.”

That’s two signings in two days, or three in two weeks, for Alan Pardew. The job isn’t done however and we still need more in, but it’s not a bad start to the window thus far. The plus point for me is that we have got three players in for about £4.5 million. That is effectively the Kevin Nolan money gone, plus it leaves us with a more cash for later on in the window when the money really does start to come into play.

The way I see it is that NUFC are moving quickly to secure targets that are likely to be interesting other clubs. People will call it all very cheap, but at the end of the day it’s these in demand, out of contract players that should be the priority at the moment. Then, later on in the window when the bigger, perhaps more well known players start to move we can make moves for them.

Welcome to Newcastle Sylvain Marveaux!

  1. Looks a decent player – hope he stays fit.

He hasn’t played since November though so we’re going to have Gosling, HBA and him all trying to et their fitness back. Pre season very important to them.

  2. I have no problem with the 35m we have from Carroll being paid in these kind of players wages (over the term of their contacts).
How many past windows have we only done business on the last 2 or 3 days… this is great to see…

  3. Very very interesting. Leaving aside Nolan, Jose, Barton etc considerations for the time being, it does look like the club has a very deliberate plan for this summer. Can’t recall ever having seen that previously. Pleasantly surprised.

  4. Great news to wake up to! We always get a couple transfers out the blue!

50 games in the past 3 seasons is a worry but if he’s passed a medical lets hope his injuries are behind him. Feels good to get one over Liverpool. 😀

    Welcome to Newcastle Marveaux! 🙂

  5. we now need 1 or 2 top strikers a top defender and a top top attacking midfielder then we will aim for the big top 6

  6. yes Stuart I agree pre season is going to be very important to the whole squad.
Hopefully all come thru fit and well.
Wish I was in the states to see how it goes. 😕

  10. Gents – I’m back in the UK for the week we play Villa in brum. What’s the best chance for me getting tickets in the away end?

  11. Its fantastic to hear such news this morning especially as its totally out of the blue! Well done to Pardew, Ashley and co for getting this deal done so quickly after he failed to agree terms with Liverpool. Must admit I’m over the moon about it all!

  12. Sydney….probably join the membership scheme and hopefully season ticket holders won’t take up all the allocation.

  13. it will be nice to actually have a left footer playing left mid…. it has been a while since we have had that luxury..

  14. Marv-ellous news 😳

I was expecting Barnetta to sign today if I am honest, this came totally out of the blue.

I reckon it’s unlikely to get both Barnetta and The Zog though, would be amazing if we did.

    Realistically

    Matuidi
    Barnetta
    Striker
    Jose’s replacement

Is what we can expect to see.

  15. A friend of mine who was posting on here the other day mentioned that we are front runners for Sturridge on a year long loan….

He does here things from reliable sources too.

  16. I don’t post here often but just want to say Credit where credit is due to Mr Ashley. A Good signing and have no doubts Liverpool will be smarting at this one!! We are being run very sensibly as far as finances are concerned & its credit to the powers that be that we can pick up players such as Cabaye & Marveaux ahead of the likes of Liverpool. Rumours in the journalstic world are that the likes of Spuds & Villa & the Mackems have overspent & HAVE to sell to be able to buy, hence Henderson, Modric & Young gone/going. I know folk have been upset to see Nolan go & doubts over Barton but I can see a bright future at Newcastle.

Fingers crossed thats true…Getting Sturridge would be class even on a loan.

    P.S. Please don’t sell Jonas.

  20. Just been reading the link someone posted from the mirror and says Mr Marvel had a great partnership at Rennes with Gyan setting up most of his goals mmm….

  21. I am very worried about all the crocks we have at the club. I have doubts about whether Gosling will ever play football again (a hunch). I am also very concerned about Ben Arfa. Now we have signed two more crocks. We ain’t got a good record with rehab so why are we buying high risk players?

      (Quote)

  22. to all ashley hater who whinge that we only sign free player maybe part of the 35mil received will be used to pay back the loan to ashley so he can sell the club to make you happy

  23. all good players but the injury thing is a worry slightly. also i see that sevilla have came in for colo at 5 million and we have said 7. i hope that is pap as colo is our rock in defence..i wanted new players in but not at expense of al lthe others leaving. The Times (so not the usual rubbish tabloid) say that jose has entered talks with arsenal. christ… its going to be a whole new 11!

  24. I tried really hard not to comment at Lacedaemonian@34’s post…..

but it’s a good point. I’ll be really happy to see all of our new players performing in the black and white stripes, to dispel all these injury concerns.. 🙄

  27. cc@58…I fear if Sevilla up the Collo bid to 7 million quids….he’s outahere… 😥 😥 I’d love him to stay, but Ashley will just see the dollar signs…another mega earner off the books.. 🙁

7 million for a 29 year old is pretty good, but Collo has a relaxed style, he could play for years at the very top…

  28. I’m sure this is the guy i read about in the BBC gossip column this morning…..he was set to join Liverpool but failed a medical, is that why we’re waiting until July 1st to complete the deal, so he can get over whatever problem he has or is there some other reason, and BBC sport has got it wrong ??? 😕

      (Quote)

  29. Craig Chisholm

Hope you’re wrong about Colo. Will be devastated if he left 🙁

      (Quote)

  30. and MunichMag @ 45, i share the exact fear you do, i dread Coloccini leaving us, not only because we know Ashley could well accept a £7 million bid but at Coloccini’s age, could this be his last chance to join a club that is playing European football each season ? Many top clubs dont tend to target defenders nearing or at 30, they favour younger players

      (Quote)

  31. I absolutely despise Ashley and the board etc, but fair play for making these moves in the transfer market. Cheap, but that doesn’t bother me if they are good players.

I just worry about who will be leaving, and whether these signings are to strengthen the squad, or if they are signed as replacements for our better players. If the latter, we are still at square one, but we shall see and I will make my judgement at the start of the season.

I really hope this is a turning point for Mr Ashley, however I do worry that his next big f*** up is just around the corner and I think we’ll have fans screaming for his head before too long. It’s interesting that the Nolan deal didn’t receive too much criticism, and I’ve accepted that Jose is already gone. There are worrying whispers that Colo may be off though, and that is not something I would like to see. Mr Barton seems to be doing everything he can to get himself transferred despite saying he loves the club and wants to stay.

Interesting days ahead, I’m pleased so far, but my nagging feeling is that something bad is about to happen.

  32. Colm …Marveaux does seem to have injury issues, time will show if they are valid.

  33. There’s always a bron isn’t there to take the happy tone off this morning 🙁 !!!!!!!-BORING 😈 !!!!!!! Good buy/signing-time will tell though,i for 1 have no problems with Jonas going, for me he`s a liability,he does a lot without doing anything,,he runs around and has little or no end product apart from the OCASIONAL piece of magic.Hope we keep Barton-we`ll need somebody to pull the team together-load of foreigners who”need time to adapt”-etc,etc,but overall a very good start to a window which very few of us could have expected but just as importantly there seems to be a master plan-but time will tell..Benny Arfa isn’t a crock-a pure class act who suffered a horrific break-Gosling? not the quickest but it would appear we`r buying a shed load of speed so it will defo be interesting,as said above-pre-season is going to be critical…I`m still a bit cynical and believe we need a couple of TOP strikers which will cost money-will he spend? don’t think so but?????? Sturridge on loan?-yeah ok then…. 😀

      (Quote)

  34. Our wage bill will no doubt be reduced next season too and I don’t think there will be a significant purchase made though. I don’t want us to spend for the sake of spending but I would expect a several million pound player to be bought at some point even if to just to dispel my skepticism regarding money at the club.

Did anybody read the article about Mohammed Abdellaoue’s strike rate?

Spotr on. I think a good offer for Collo could be accepted given his age sand salary and there’s an argument to accept it.

We still have high earners at the club and I think the club want to reduce that liability.

My only worry about selling Collo is the replacement – I think we’re short at centre back as it is.

  36. Loaning Sturridge for a year would be a brilliant bit of business. The bloke has no qualms about playing for clubs outside the the top 6, I mean he was at Bolton last year, why not Newcastle this year ?

      (Quote)

  37. Another good player.

I predicted a while back that we would be getting players out of the blue and they would have contractual problems or releases.

Cabaye, Marveaux and Ba on the face of are good players and good business.

      (Quote)

  38. Well MunichMag i just really hope we never see a player (be it Ba with his knee or Marveaux with whatever) with the injury record of Owen, that was ridiculous. It was something like 72 appearances in 4 years, taking into consideration there are 38 league games a season plus cup and europe when we were in it, he should have easily hit 100, but i do agree with you there and hope time will show us some positive stuff !

      (Quote)

  39. Stuart…agree 100%…When Collo first arrived I had great hopes, a real marquis signing, then he had a poor first season, but since then has settled in really well and had his best season in the toon strip last season. FFS…last years captain gone, Collo and Nolan (both tying it for last years player of the season) maybe gone…hhhmmm

To be honest, any good manager, as in company manager, not football manager, is always planning ahead. I’m sure the replacement for Collo should he leave has already been identified, and he’s probably a free transfer guy…!

      (Quote)

  40. Brilliant news to wake up to! I’ve been banging on about Marveux since september! Haha and we beat liverpool to him as well, brilliant signing, well done pards!

  41. Re: Owen 72 games in 4 years = hate figure

Barton 78 games in 4 years = cult hero

Makes no sense to me. Time to get shot imo. He’s taken the **** out of the club and fans for long enough. He won’t be missed with the quality were bringing in anyway

      (Quote)

  42. Yeah MunichMag im absolutely sure he didnt reach 100 games, he only played like 11 games in his opening season before missing all but 3 games the next, then he had 2 seasons of half-decent amounts of games (with a few decent performances) before ditching us, so he can’t have got too far past 70 games 😐

      (Quote)

  43. cc@61…my thoughts too… 🙄

Though Sevilla can offer Collo europa league footy next season…

  44. Anyone going to try and have a stab at what the first eleven might look like next season then?

  46. munich

Aye mate just seems a bit like agent talk and the only paper that picked it up was the sun 🙄

Would be a gutter if he did leave, He is the glue that just about keeps it together at the back, Taylor and Williamson together at Villa was like the blind leading the blind, Both need a boss and to sell him is suicidal IMHO…

      (Quote)

  47. @Toon Chicken 65

Barton has had both medical and outside issues, fair enough, but when he’s played for us and particularly this season he’s given his all and shown leadership even when it hasn’t been asked of him.

Owen on the other hand was our captain and didn’t give two sh*ts when we were getting/got relegated..

      (Quote)

  48. Her’s my tip….you heard it here first….doh…

Jose to Arsenal and in return we get Kieran Gibbs and 5 million quids……Jose gets Champs League… 🙄
