Marveaux signs five year deal at Newcastle.

Marveaux signs five year deal.
Newcastle have this morning confirmed the signing of a second player in two days in the shape of former Rennes winger Sylvain Marveaux.

The 25-year-old will move to St James’ Park on July 1st when his Rennes contract expires and will join our other two new captures of Yohan Cabaye and Demba Ba in what is looking like will be a new look Newcastle team for next season.

The former French Under-21 international has made over 100 (102 to be precise) appearances for Rennes and has scored 16 goals in the process. He can play in a number of positions in midfield but is more commonly used as a left winger.

Here is a video of him in action to give us a bit more background. I’ve never seen the lad play to be honest so it helps me out aswell!

What I do know is that Liverpool were very interested in the player and it had been reported that a deal had been agreed with them. Apparently not and it’s Newcastle United who have acted quickly to secure another player. Here is what Alan Pardew had to say about securing his second signing in two days:

“It’s a great coup to have signed Sylvain, who has received interest from a number of other clubs,” Pardew told the club website. “He may not be well known to many of our fans but he is a real talent and a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time. It’s been a good couple of days for us on the transfer front.”

That’s two signings in two days, or three in two weeks, for Alan Pardew. The job isn’t done however and we still need more in, but it’s not a bad start to the window thus far. The plus point for me is that we have got three players in for about £4.5 million. That is effectively the Kevin Nolan money gone, plus it leaves us with a more cash for later on in the window when the money really does start to come into play.

The way I see it is that NUFC are moving quickly to secure targets that are likely to be interesting other clubs. People will call it all very cheap, but at the end of the day it’s these in demand, out of contract players that should be the priority at the moment. Then, later on in the window when the bigger, perhaps more well known players start to move we can make moves for them.

Welcome to Newcastle Sylvain Marveaux!

  1. Fair point Toon Chicken @ 65, but i think one of the main reasons Barton is admired is because he stuck around when we were relegated, Owen kept putting off signing a new contract with us with the exact intention of leavig us that summer. There were a nmber of clubs keen on Barton but he stayed to help us 🙂

  2. Stuart@69…only Bobby Shinton Nr 9 and Steve Wraith with their matching crystal balls can tell us that mate…. 😆 😆 😆

  3. Which clubs were after Barton – Strangeways FC?

Howay man – he was damaged goods – nee one would have touched him with a barge pole.

Make no mistake – we owe him nothing. He is still massively in debt to the club and the fans

  4. Colm@76…I reckon a bunch of guys stayed around after relegation cos no-one would match their wage demands….

Westspam have a similar situation with Scott Parker..he is 29 and doesn’t want to play Fizzy pop league, but he earns a huge wedge apparently, and West Ham want 8 million squids for him….sounds like a bit of an impasse to me, unless someone pays loadsamoney for a 29 year old…..

  10. If our ideology is fast played passing football – it starts from the back. Colo is the best ball player in the league.

I can’t see him going – it would be like botting the queen mum – in very bad taste (considering she has been dead a while too) 😆

  15. toon chicken@65… i dont think tis about the numbers at all. if owen had said at time of relegation… i am part to blame forthis, i am staying and will help us back up where we beling as did al l the ones who stayed… instead of printing off a glossy brochure four months before our relegation pimping himself out to other clubs.. then slagging us off constantly sayign we are **** and he would rather warm benches than play for u getc etc, perhaps he too would be applauded each time he walked on st james as an away player. Forgetting about us lot on here.. as only microscopic amount of a cross section… i take it you go to the games.. our fans are widley regarded as being some of the most knowledgable in the league… they clap and cheer ex players all the time as we know when its deserved… there was reason why the fans were bad with owen last season, same as they will be bad with AC next. We see through their waffle and their alegence lies to the greenback, not our black and white.

  16. HERES A LITTLE SOMETHING ABOUT MARVEAUX LADS

He has pace, deadly pace, he is very capable of eliminating a defence on a single acceleration. He will take the ball and go through knocks and shocks to reach his target, a goal or a good pass. He can stay on his legs, no doubt about it, and although he isn’t of the strongest build he shouldn’t be worried with the strength of English defenders. His game made of acceleration can lead him to natural fatigue in the closing stages, but when in good shape he is perfectly able to contribute 90 minutes week-in week-out and bring his fair share of goals and assists.

  17. Army agree ith both comments @ 89 and 91. Although I must admit I havent seen Cabaye or Marveax play so its hard for me to say if they are good or not , but as you point out on pst 89 Carr is a legend and I have faith in him , so I am very happy with our business so far n hopefully we can another couple of players in

      (Quote)

  18. Pearceet-I watched a couple of rennes games at the start of the season and I have to say I really liked him. He can also play left back, but he’s by no means a big/strong lad so I guess defenisvely he might be a bit suspect like Ferguson. Theres no doubting his ability going forward, or his attacking skills when he’s playing as a winger. He’s better than what we currently have if we were to say switch Jonas onto the right and play him on the left, I’d still hope for Nzogbia or someone better as a starter, I think Marveux could give us an impact from the bench and obviously give us options before we even line up.

He’s interested ManU and Arsenal over the years I believe, I guess the problems are that he’s had a fair few injuries and he might be a little lightweight, still think he’ll be a good player for us though.

      (Quote)

  19. AOD – Of course it is. It’s just been that signing are obviously going to take priority, plus I’ve been working, plus there have been loads of drafts submitted all at once which I’m working through.

It will be up later today 🙂

  20. he never failed liverpool medical.it was contractual stuff so he pulled the plug and signed for us. funny that.. jose – a lefty – sees them as better option and wants to go there but this fella – a lefty- had issues and came here.

    Google translate from L’Equipe:

Where will Sylvain Marveaux next season? If everything was set for the player out of contract with Rennes join Liverpool this summer, it is unlikely to be the case. “I do not want to go into details, but if I did not sign in Liverpool, because there was a contractual disagreement between the parties Thursday night,” we said the player reached by phone .

Always in search of a new base, the middle left also wanted to wring the neck “rumors” that have reported a problem during a medical visit. “Frankly it’s anything, the player protested. I am in good health and fit to play. I resumed training with Rennes individual end of the season and I could play the last game if the club had wanted to. It disgusts me to read a few things like that because I know it could affect the rest of my career. Today I can commit to undergo a medical before you and you will see that there is no problem ”

  22. Toonsy – you best start getting to work on a new banner, Nolan gone, Barton , Enrique on way and now Sevilla have allegedly bid for Collo 🙁

  23. Yeah i noticed woodgate is available yesterday FSOTC , I think he d be worth a punt on a ay as you play deal , could provide that experience cover now sol has gone.

  24. So we’ve beat the Scouse to a signing and it’s ‘down to medical issues’

We also beat the scouse makems to a signing and it’s apparantly because they couldn’t match the 75k a week we are paying…

    Bitter you reckon 😀

  25. I have been reading rumours that McLeash wants Simpson as his first signing for Villa . Hope we tell them to f**k off . I think if Jonas starts on the right , then with his tracking back it wiil give Simpson the help he needs which he did not have last season and we will see a much better full back . I also cant see colo leaving ,simply put he is on too much money here and unless its Barcelona or Real Madrid i don’t think spanish clubs could afford him .

  26. MORENO i would still like to see zog come in he seems a fit lad that can take the hits the P.L. hand out this is a hard lge to play in many top players could not handle it,yes its great to see new players comeing can they blend quickly enough, but you need players that can handle the P.L. imo,and zog meets that

      (Quote)

  27. ice,

The Zog would be a signing which would have me jumping out my seat and it’s just as you say it, you just know he will be raring to go for PL football straight away.

If we put our hand in our pockets for him, I will give the club a lot of credit

      (Quote)

  28. Crikey theres a lot of waffle going on.
Gael Clichy and gomez both linked to the toon 😯

      (Quote)

  29. ice/moreno…seems to me as if zog is dead in the water now perhaps with the signing of Marveaux…pity really, cos we know he can hack it in the PL…

  30. I’m not convinced Ashley is interested in N’zog, as I think it would have happened by now if he was serious.
So I have written that one off.

    For now

  31. A week or so back, I read that Liverpool were looking to pick up Clichy from L’**** and I wondered if that was because they’d given up on Enrique. Maybe now it’s a matter of a straight swap–Clichy for Enrique.

      (Quote)

  32. Don’t want Clichy…..if he’s not good enough for Arsenal, we don’t want him….

Now the permutations are starting to kick in…

Bendtner – Jose swap anyone ….???

      (Quote)

  33. Dont think Bender is what we need if Jose goes.
Got to be M’ Penguin or whatever he’s called

      (Quote)

  34. FSOTC,

Always seen Fergie as a winger, don’t think he has the muscle or aerial ability to be an out and out full back and Taylor isn’t the finished article.

With all due respect to Simmo, we will be really week in those positions if we don’t bring in a quality replacement for Jose. The wingers we are looking at are very attack minded too.

Need to keep hold for Jonas

      (Quote)

  35. This Marveaux signing has me thinking Toonsy was right about he move away from traditional wing play. One of the earlier links on this thread had a very detailed analysis of his style of play and he does not function in the traditional winger style at all, if that is to be believed. It also said that he basically can’t be asked to pitch in defending and has left his left back at Rennes (Captain USA, Carlos Bocanegra, by the way) exposed numerous times.

Pardew is moving very, very quickly, isn’t he? I wonder if it’s moving too fast.

I wrote this yesterday or the day before–we’re in revolution, not evolution mode, it seems. It’s exciting, but it is a big gamble.

What if these new dudes don’t gel and the stylistic stamp Pardew wants to place on them doesn’t take shape right away? It could be a very tops-turvy season.

For all those who might accuse of doom-mongering, please note the presence of the words “if,” “could be,” and “I wonder.” These conditionals indicate concern, not Chicken Little-style freak out.

      (Quote)

  36. I Agree Moreno
Fergie is a winger he is far to light to be a defender . Don’t think we have seen the best of jonas yet , put him on the right and let him have a go in his natural position . I truly believe he will have more impact on that side .

  37. Is the hispanic era at the toon coming to an end to be replaced by a new Francophile era….all the spanish speaking lads toast ?…

What happened to the team full of Geordies ? We had one in the team, but he was too good so the cockney boys sold him pdq… 🙄

      (Quote)

  38. I think young Fergie is gonna be a great player for the toon. Steady lad, has his head screwed on, came through the academy, can play a bit too…

      (Quote)

  39. I wonder what the toon sprogs make of all this coming and going. Young Vucic has suddenly fallen well down the pecking order…loan to Fizzy Pop league perhaps would do him good ?

      (Quote)

  40. I’d rather have Gibbs and maybe vela? Is vela still there?

The marveux signing is great tho a little worried with injuries.

I can see collo going but wouldn’t it be great to get sakho in to replace him. What are the home grown quota requirements? Only Nolan and sol have left that affect negatively but it is a slight concern

      (Quote)

  41. Don’t think it would BrisVegas we still have Harper , Simmo ,Williamson , Perch ( not for to long i hope ) Barton? both Taylors , Krul , Gosling ,Guthrie and Shola who out the first team would qualify for the 6 not sure where best graduated from being Irish he could fall outside the 6 if his apprenticeship was with an irish club . Add to those the young guns from the acadamy Ferguson and Kadar and i don’t think we have much too worry about

      (Quote)

  42. very interesting Brisvegas, but how old was that article?
I assume nothing has changed since then tho

      (Quote)

  43. That article is a couple of years old. I think since then there’s been some debate in the European parliament and FIFA have produced a working paper and some umming and arring has gone on in Euro circles.

I have no idea where it’s at at the moment. There is some talk in some circles that the reason English players are so expensive is because a lot of teams may be needing them in the future. It’s thought by others that Villa pursued this buying English policy under O’Neill as a type of insurance-cum-investment policy.

Personally, I don’t think it will come in. Certainly not any time soon. It might get watered down to be 6 EEC players and 5 others. That would pass the Euro rules.

      (Quote)

  44. So he is a playmaker with pace, totally left-footed. Plays quite centrally and likes to cut inside. Doesn’t look for the run of the left back or link up on the flank very well. He gives us an alternative to Jonas if it is true that we are keeping Jonas. Looks like we will have options next season with finally some pace in the attacking areas.
