Jonas made available for transfer?

Next out the door?
The Journal is today reporting that Newcastle are willing to listen to offers for Jonas Gutierrez. The Argentinian has been linked with a move away from St James’ park following the sale of Kevin Nolan

If the local paper is to be believed, the player may well be sacrificed as Newcastle continue to make big changes within the squad. French winger Sylvain Marveaux agreed to join United on Saturday morning, which has put a big question mark over the future of Jonas.

In my previous article I mentioned Jonas as a potential departure this summer. The Argentinian is still of a good age at 27 and still has a couple of years left on his existing contract. However the player is probably on big wages at Newcastle and it’s no secret that Mike Ashley is trying to trim the wage bill.

Jonas although frustrating at times can be an exciting player on his day. He links up well with Jose Enrique down the left flank, the pair have built a good understanding both on and off the field.

For me Jonas had a solid season last term. Two performances spring to mind, although both games resulted in a loss. The first being Man city away, the game in which Manchester City were awarded a penalty outside the area and we were denied a blatant penalty. Jonas scored our goal in which was a 2-1 defeat and played out of his skin that afternoon.

The other game being Liverpool away, a game to forget in all honesty. On the whole it was a poor team performance and the team showed little desire and urgency that day, resulting in a 3-0 loss. Jonas was the only player who could walk away with any credit that day, even at 2-0 down it looked as if he was willing to bust a gut to get something out of the game.

Don’t get me wrong the winger has performed well for big parts of the season and contributed in victories as well, but those two performances stand out in my mind. It’s unfortunate we lost both fixtures, if the rest of the team showed the same willing as Jonas in the Liverpool game we may have gotten something that day.

It’s well documented that Gutierrez weakness is seemingly his final ball. If you are a wide man part of your job is to supply dangerous crosses for the strikers. Jonas doesn’t always offer this, in truth his crossing is pretty poor. Although lets be fair he has at times surprised us and popped up with some decent assists.

It really is a time of change on Tyneside and very much out with the old and in with the new. Personally I would hope to keep hold of Jonas, he is a good player and another player that has often spoken of his happiness at the club.

The arrival of Merveaux gives Pardew options and competition for places is always healthy. Merveaux seemingly a touch injury prone as well makes it even more of a risk to rely on him to play the majority of our games next season.

I would like to see the Argentinian international stay, but if he is indeed available for transfer perhaps the club are looking at other targets. But either way strength in depth is vital and is something the club have lacked for sometime now. I think having good competition within the camp not only keeps players on their toes but also shows sign of progression.

What do you think about the speculation regarding Jonas? Stay tuned another Jose/ Jonas article from Louis Tiplady will be with you in an hour or so.

  1. Sad to see him go,plays his heart out for the team but i judge my wingers on crossing and Jonas isn’t very good at that, also he should score a few more goals for the team so i say we can improve the team in his position with the right player(N’Zogbia).

  2. icedog…. and we have pulled out of zog cos he wanted 60k a week.. forgive me but i dont think thts over the top wages for the bloke.

  3. CC not when you are takeing smith 60 grand nolan 50 grand oot the door, plus whoever else goes, thats a cut in wage bill doon a fair bit

  4. 83 icedog… and zogs is no sicknote. he plays all year to same level. we have no ambition as a club, really we do not. we aspire to want to be in the PREM and say all the right things about kicking on and making it to next level etc but want to have outgoings of championship side. Yes, great if you can get in a few cheeky cheapies like tiote etc.. .but to assemble and entire squad on this theory is fundamentally floored and it will fail. yes there are always bargins but generally speaking in life.. .you do get what you pay for and you wont get a roller if you pay smart car money.

  5. Craig relax, its all speculation we wont have the amount of out goings claimed in the gossip rags…

the only reason we have made cheap signs so far is because they are 1st priority an every season we usually miss out on these type of players , an im glad to see were not getting distractred by big money moves as of yet, liverpool for example to concerned with the 20m switch the mackem joker and the dropped the ball on Maveroux.. who you rather we focused on the 10m move for Erndric (sorry bout the spelling) and then miss out on Cabaye, Ba and Mav !!

Money never flows this early in the window, we have to wait for other teams to sign an sell before we make our move, PSG got in a new striker so over the next week or 2 i can see us gettin our man an not on the cheap either …

And for the record if we got another 4 cheap players of the caliber of Ba Mav an Cabaye I for would be happy.. I dont care if we spend big or not as long as the right type of players are bought.. Big money got us Owen, Luque, Xisco Marcellinho, Boumsong to name a few
