This time last year…..

The man who stabilised a sinking ship
Another season has passed us by in what seemed like a flash, and the overall feeling at the end of this season seems to be a lot more positive than that at the end of last season.

The three recent additions to the squad have already put us in a stronger position, although the sale of Kevin Nolan does somewhat detract from that.

Our spell in the Championship, whichever way you look at it had greatly boosted the morale of the supporters and the team. In fact it has been argued by many that it was actually a good thing we got relegated as we got rid of the players that didn’t want to be there and knuckled down into a hardworking, committed squad.

However as the fixtures list was released the doubts began to creep in, how were we going to survive in the Premier League with an arguably weaker squad than the one we had went down with last time around?

Elsewhere we went off on a pretty uneventful pre-season tour which included some obscure new competition that was held with a couple of other Spanish teams. Unfortunately our right-back Danny Simpson gained an injury in the training session before that game, and it turned out he would miss the start of the season because of it.

At the end of June we somehow decided that James Perch was a Premier League quality defender, now I’m not one to personally attack players, but whoever decided that he was worth of a four year deal needs to take a long hard look at themselves.

Our players weren’t scared to put themselves on the international stage by any means during the World Cup, namely Spiderman playing in an unfamiliar defensive role.

Other noticeable events that occurred 12 months ago include the decision to give Andy Carroll the famous number 9 shirt, one that would be regretted later on. Tim Krul decided to extend his contract with the club after receiving an improved offer and Sol Campbell arrived and many hoped he would steady the boat in our defensive areas.

Seems a lot longer that twelve months ago doesn’t it? Ah well, a trip down memory lane never hurt anyone… (can’t say the same thing about White Hart Lane 😆 )

  1. Nice to see an article lifting the mood :). And the person deciding the deal regarding Perch needs to take more than a look at themself.

  2. This time last year I was looking at the newly released fixtures. I decided the first game I was going to make the 500 mile trip up home to Newcastle to see was the Blackpool game. I thought it would be an easy win… How wrong I was as I watched the only 2 goals of the match slip past Steve Harper and hit the back of the net to a whinsing and groaning Gallowgate end.

  3. With regards to “Perch”.
    Not all transfers work out.

You can’t say that the lad didn’t try.
He was a bit over-zealous at times.

Lots of other bigger signings needed time in the team and relegation to the Championship before they started to play.

  4. Bit of news, not sure it means anything for the toon… The whole Celtic side will be traveling to Australia to play some matches… All except Inzagaire?? Make of it what you will…. 😎

This could mean he is signing for us,but it also means Jose will be off, Jonas will leave too coz he will miss his mate and Colo will leave because he won’t be able to borrow Jonas’s pantene shampoo to keep his locks healthy…

    Since when is Jonas leaving???

  6. Does that tweet mean he “doesn’t” want to go or “didn’t” want to go? Obviously a big difference there..

  8. @elgalgojonasjonas gutierrez
Buenos dias, cada vez falta menos para volver a newcastle. Good morning, less days to return to newcastle.

    Is that his real twitter?
Bit of a rubbish translation, but sounds like he’s counting down the days to get back to Newcastle?
Good attitude, I know I’m not dying to get back to work after my hols…… but I hope he is!! 😀

  9. Last year at this tiome it was excitement about the new season and worry about the lack of signings. THis year it seems to be the worry that the signings will come good.
