Marveaux: “I beat players with skill, not power and size.”

Marveaux-lous business?
What do we really know about Sylvain Marveaux? I mean aside from some videos on YouTube and a few descriptions of him there isn’t much else about is there?

All we know is what we’ve been told by third parties. It’s not like Demba Ba where we we’ve all seen him first hand in the Premier League is it? Marveaux is an unknown quantity to many of us who will only really be able to weigh up his worth once we see him in action with our own eyes.

He’s supposedly got good technical ability and a lot of pace. We’ll see. The player himself though seems to fancy himself as a bit of a handful and has described himself as “skillful” and “athletic” in an interview with the local press today. In quotes that I’ll attribute to The Journal, Marveaux had this to say when describing what he is about:

“I believe I can cope with the move and excite the fans. That is my intention,” said the 25-year-old. “I’m an attacking player and I like to entertain the supporters. I’m not scared about the physical side of things, I beat players with skill, not power and size.”

I’d also add confident to that aswell 😉

However the Premier League is a fast environment, much faster than most leagues in fact. It’s also more physical, as Hatem Ben Arfa will no doubt testify to. The ability of a new signing from a new league to adapt to that is paramount to the success of a player. Marveaux claims that it doesn’t worry him and that he is ready to adapt and is fully prepared for what the likes of Stoke and Blackburn have to throw at him.

“I know what happened to Hatem, but I’m not scared about being kicked either. I’m ready for that. Every European league is hard, I will not be intimidated, I will be prepared for everything. It might take me a little bit of time to settle, but I don’t think it will take long.”

“I speak some English so that will help me with my team-mates and living in the city. I’ve been warned the English league is faster and more physical, but it does not worry me. I’m athletic and I’m looking forward to playing that style of football.”

“There will be a bit of adjustment needed, but I’ve got a full pre-season to prepare for the start of the league and I will make sure I work hard in that time to be in the best possible shape.”

Hopefully he can adapt quickly and show us that these aren’t just words and that he is exactly what he says he is. Time will tell on that though, but I’d like to think that the fans will give him a bit of time. I mean time did wonders for Jose Enrique and Fabricio Coloccini after all, which is worth bearing in mind.

Plus, if Wor Sylvain is that athletic he won’t have to worry about too many challenges surely? 😉

  1. i think this lad is gonna be a rocket down our left this season!! this is the first time in aggggges i cant wait for the season to kick off , very exciting!! lets hope 3 more signings before arsenal!!

  2. Let’s be honest… A year ago had anyone heard of any of these players?
That’s not nessessarily a bad thing. Many hadn’t heard of Tiote, N’Zogbia, Bernard, Domi, even Ginola to a degree, when they signed.
We have a history of the Frenchman (centre backs apart) doing well…
But I think we can only get excited when these guys gel on the field…

  3. He sounds really pleased to be here from whats he’s been saying, seems a nice lad too.

@4 He’s could have played the last few games of the season for his last club but they refused to because he wasn’t going to sign a new deal.

If we were worried about his injury problems he would never have got a 5 year contract, he passed Liverpools medical and he passed our medical so I have no doubts over his fitness. 🙂

  4. I am very concerned about signing injured players. We have a history of signing perfectly healthy players and turning them into highly injury prone players. So I make no apologies about conflicting with some of the unfounded enthusiasm I am reading here. I also don’t think we have a history of French men doing well at the club. Most were average at best other than Ginola and Robert (on his day) and pretty much all of them impacted negatively on the changing room.

  5. ………I reckon we’s got another french starlet on our hands 😆 😆 ..a la Robert, Ginola type footballer

……Munich Mag from the other thread, aye’p hopefully a dominoe effect with new Chewwlseee boss, loadsa cash for new players, sturridge on loan to the toon with option to buy ❓ ……..hmmm exciting times lads!! Exciting times!! 😉 😉

  6. geordieqatar@11….aye mate, thats my take on things, hope it comes off with Sturridge…

You can see things moving now, the players are coming back from there jollys, reporting for pre-season soon, deals are being done, talks ongoing etc… I reckon wor lot have done there homework, and have a few moves on hold waiting for blokes to say either “yes” or to wait for the domino effect to kick in… Either way, exciting times ahead for the toon, at least in my perhaps naively optimistic world !

  7. Wasn’t it a hamstring injury this lad had? Jose has had a few hamstring injuries….. does that make him injury prone? Or is it that they are only human and injuries are part and parcel of it all?

  8. Lacedaemonian – totally agree tbh, we do seem to create injury prone players out of healthy players, so signing players who alrady hve injury records isnt exactly he smartest move. Ba has some knee condition i hear that could get worse with age, and i read somewhere that Marveaux suffered a groin problem back in November and was still not completely over it by the end of the season 😕 i didnt even know groin injuries could go on that long !!!

  10. just out of curiosity, is there a reason Newcastle seem to play the same teams in pre-season every couple of years ? Over the past few seasons teams that have been in the list at least twice seem to have been Darlington, Carlisle, Hartlepool, Norwich and Leeds 😐 At least this summer is something different with this US tour i guess

  12. BBC sport says Barton has backed Carroll to star at Liverpool…Is he trying to **** us off now like when Nolan said he was happy for him ? Could this be an attempt to wind up Ashley ??? 😯

      (Quote)

  13. I agree, i just hope Barton isnt going to get slammed like Nolan just for complimenting him… 🙄

  14. So do I batty , as long as he stays out of trouble , any more on the rumor Judas was arrested in Ibiza?

    NZogbia – 7mil profit
    Bassong – 9mil profit
    Domi – good loan spell
    Bernard – did well
    Ginola- did great
Robert – did well (we qualified for CL)
Saha – good loan spell (we were idiots not to sign him)
Sylvain Distain – great loan spell

You still don’t think they havnt done a decent job for us?

  19. I’m more worried about the guy’s Frenchness than his injuries, although both are a concern. Even Robert, though a good player, pissed off plenty of people in the dressing room.

Then again, I suspect Sturridge and co can ‘out-****’ him…

  22. The Bayern bid for the Tranmere lad has been doing the rounds here for weeks now… but he’ll be WAY down the pecking order…one for the future obviously…

In fact our transfer policy IS going this way somewhat, sign promising youngsters with the hope and intention that they make it big. If not sell them on a few years later hopefully for a couple of million to recoup the initial outlay…

      (Quote)

  23. MunichMag @ 34 – how much have Bayern bid for this lad, just out of curiosity ? Are Tranmere gonna get rich off him ? 😛

      (Quote)

  24. I hope they can put more of a bias towards UK-born players with the yooof policy; it looks like the only way to avoid a field full of foreginers at the moment. Not that I’m xenophobic; I just don’t think any team will really get to the top unless they have a strong core of home-grown lads; the passion is never the same for most foreigners coming to a club. (Not all, just most)

  25. The majority of French players we have had over the years have done really well for us imo. Apart from the odd one, Guivarch springs to mind, though he arrived as a world cup winner or summat, and turned out to be poor…

got nee problem having a bunch of Frenchies in the team, we just need to get the balance right, and a few geordies and scousers in the team alongside the French Connection will be well appreciated….

      (Quote)

  26. Toonsy, were you being sincere with that example?

I was thinking about Dyer, Woodgate, Shearer, Owen, Duff, Marcelinho, Duncan Ferguson, Joey Barton, Gutherie and tbh giving examples is not really the point. For as long as I can remember we have always had one of the worst sick lists in the Premier League.

I am hoping a good pre season calms some of my fears.

  27. Whumpie@37…what about Tim Krul…he aint local, and he’s gonna be a big player for us…

  28. army69…i dont call it negative…just realistic with the hope of being proved wrong. some call it negative but thats same as saying someone who is always happy about it is a dreamer 😉

  29. Colm…no idea about the fee for the Tranmere lad at Bayern to be honest. Cannot see whats in it for the lad, apart from swapping Tranmere for Munich like…. 😆 😆 😆

  41. tattyheed…I go to the Oktoberfest every year, I think it’s great crack…kitschy for “us Bavarians” but still great crack…

As a tip…you need to get your flights and digs sorted out, cos it gets a bit tricky around this time…

    p.s. I’m from Newcastle by the way…. 😆 😆

  43. batty@62, a know what you mean, the Frenchies need to understand the “work ethic” of playing in England, though I reckon JB or Tiote will keep them right on that score 😆 😆

  45. Guivarc’h was hardly given a fair chance at Newcastle.

He only started four games and scored 1 goal.

He also ended his career with something like 150 goals in 300 appearances… I’ve seen far worse.

  47. @Munich – I am sure I have had my moments like but I have been largely positive with the key issues in the last two years. I support the appointment of Pardew and support the tighter financial attitude of the club.

  48. Lacedaemonian…I was just joking mate, the shinannigans which have gone on at the club over the last years would try any supporters patience… 🙁

I also saw Colo, Enrique and many others get torn to shreds and told they’re useless in their first six months here… But you can’t argue with his goals record. He also has a world cup medal.
Hardly the worst career in the world…
